Wait what ? 46 ? Cnn and news outlets in Poland speak about 4 people missing. Why such a big disparity in numbers ?

I am pretty sure the last country you want to lecture about crime is Norway.

We are proud of our values and our emphasis on rehabilitation in prisons. It has been working very well so far, and one guy is not going to change our beliefs in how we deal with criminals. There will never be an exception, and new laws are not allowed to have an effect on previous crimes either. We have extremely low crimerates, very few people imprisoned and a high percentage of criminals returning successfully to society. Who gives a shit if people think we are "pacifists", which is a silly word to use in this situation, anyway. Even your own country (it says USA in your profile) don't have death sentencing in most states if I am correct? And if I had to choose, yes, I would rather be called a pacifist than a murderer. How is killing people teaching others that killing is wrong? Besides, most people would agree it's a far worse sentence to be in jail for life than ending it quickly. Nothing people say or do will change our maximum penalty, and besides, you should probably wait to see what sentencing he gets before discussing it.

As much as I'd like him to be tortured to death, that is not the way civilized people deal with criminals, no matter how evil the criminal is. Killing is wrong, unless out of self defence. We're not letting him get away with murder, we're putting him lifelong in prison.

And besides, killing him will give him exactly what he wants, do you want that to happen? I bet he'd even go with a smile to his execution, we're pissing him off by not giving way and standing true to our justice system.

If we want to have peace in our world we need to treat everyone the same.

Actually I agree with you. Death would be too easy for him, he deserves to sit idle in prison for 20 odd years only to be put into Forvaring until the day that he dies or hangs himself. I feel as though he will never truly deserve to be put back into the free world.

This guy had to be extremely insane to do what he just did and to believe that what he did was righteous. His mind is about as poisoned as the pious suicide bombers on the middle east.

BTW this is Sovern posting on a new account, the mod was obviously too big headed to issue a warning before proceeding to ban my account. When he bans this one ill hop on my other computer using my other alt alias.

Murder is murder, even when a government does it. The first instinct of anyone who sees such an atrocity is to punish them for what they've done. That is vengeance. The fact that retribution is one of the four ways in which the american justice system deals with criminals does not make it right. We have a tendency to characterize people who commit these atrocities as evil, but many of them are no different from you or I. This could have just as easily have happened in the US, in fact I would say it is more likely for something like this to happen here, because we are a country heavily segregated by politics, religion, race, and gender. What grounds do you have to criticize the Norwegian view when your own is just as susceptible?

Anyway, I would just like to say as a United States citizen that is admirable how well the Norwegian government has dealt with this crisis. In a severe contrast to the aftermath of 9/11, Norway has responded with cool, collected reason backed with law and principle.

So happy to actually see a sensible post from an american. I have seen too many posts about deathpenalty and guns and how the man should be raped and tortured, and love the fact that you don't want us to sink to his level. Hope we as a nation will remain as cool and collected as we are now even in light of the horrible events.

So your argument is that this man is
1. Extremely insane
2. Brainwashed like "pious suicide bombers on the middle east"
3. Deserves to die.

I would agree with you on #2, the man was definitely a christian terrorist.

But if #1 is correct, why does he deserve to die WHEN OUR OWN LAWS HAVE PROVISIONS FOR THE CRIMINALLY INSANE?

EDIT: (hopefully) Before I get flamed, I am not in any way saying that a church of any form is particularly culpable. I am merely trying to attract attention to the anti-muslim bias in our corporate news and other media. Notice how this would have been called an Islamic attack if he was an Islamic immigrant, even though few muslims support mindless violence and bloodshed.
