Coach: Netherlands Dick Advocaat On 11 May 2012, Advocaat named a provisional list of 26 players for the tournament. Vasili Berezutski and Roman Shishkin withdrew on 20 and 24 May respectively, Berezutski with a thigh injury and Shishkin due to a stomach complaint. Advocaat named his final squad on 25 May 2012; Kirill Nababkin was named having not been included in the provisional party.
Russia - Dick Advocaat was angry his side got sloppy against Poland and may tweak his starting line-up to rest tired legs. His strikeforce will stay the same though, with Andrey Arshavin looking more influential. Forward Alex Kokorin is out of the tournament with a hamstring injury.
Coach: Portugal Fernando Santos Santos named his first shortlist, composed of players based abroad, on 10 May 2012, and the second, composed of Greece-based players on 17 May 2012, totalling a 25-player provisional list. On 28 May 2012, Santos announced his 23-man squad.
Greece - Fernando Santos will switch keepers with Kostas Chalkias sidelined and Michalis Sifakis called up.

Agreed, they're looking a lot like Holland against Denmark.
It was probably correct yellow card. It seemed that Karagounis intentionally entered the collision in such a way, and not lifting his foot high enough, as to get the penalty. It was a close call though.
I get it, the referee wasn't very good today. But the player who didnt get the penalty was just going absolutely crazy at all the referees, like a beast. Good Lord. And then he counterfouled someone in the Greek box, and then snapped at the fourth referee after being taken out.
Then the referee didnt book the next foul in the Greek box, and everything went down from there. And that dumb play for time should have been booked, clearly.
Dirty game from Greece, I hope I won't have to see them again in this Euro after the quarterfinals.
Russia were asking for it playing like shit. And Greece just did what they do. I doubt they'll repeat what they did in 2004, but props for showing heart.

No theyve been rated appropriately, they were flattered by the scoreline against Czechs sure but they are a significantly better team than all the other ones in the group. Atleast they should be.
Better teams dont always win, thats just how it is.
Russia can only blame themselves for their misses. I can't see the EURO 2004 scenario returns because the big teams are stronger, Germany on ro8 and lights out (hopefully) for Greece,
I so hate football at times when an ugly team that did nothing qualifies and the most beautiful team in the damn group is eliminated. Russia played good football, was always on attacks with no dirty tricks while greece turtled like a bloody bw tvt and managed to score out of a stupid mistake then dirty tricks all the way so time goes out faster.
This is football, it's all about efficiency not spectacular playing.
Russia and even USSR before them are always techinique-based team, great at attacking but they got one serious problem. Their mentality is weak, once they are behind they are not likely to come back and this happen again. Grats for the Greece though, somehow they always get their opponent to gift goals for them somehow O_O.
Wait.. they just showed the groups on TV. Why does Russia not go through? They have a higher goal difference.. I thought it didn't come down to head to head ?

Seriously, I hope they meet up with Germany and the Germans roll them. Grats to them and the Czechs though, they earned it even if I can't stand the Greek team at all.

I think goal difference within teams tied is first, not goal difference overall.

Won't happen. We do not waste our chances.
Everyone says so in 2004 and look what the Greece has done. Greece this tourney is not as strong as they were in 2004 but anything can happen at knock-out stage.

Its head to head first.. Greece and Russia were tied at 4 points. Greece win the head to head..
If its a 3 way tie which would have been the case if Poland the Czechs drew, then its Head to head goal difference. i.e the goal difference between the teams that were tied. So effectively the matches played against Poland who would not have been part of the tie become irrelevant.
In that Scenario Greece and Russia would have gone through with the Russians believe it or not in first place with their thrashing of the Czechs putting them up there.
For some reason Greek play at this euro doesn't -_______- me like in 2004. And it doesn't -_____- me like Chelsea's champions league run did. Because it's not playing boring when you can play good. And it is not winning because most of opponents underestimate you. Greece plays like that for ages now, but they still managed to get their shit together.
Wow what a crazy group. Wp Greece. If we lose to Denmark this could happen to our team aswell. Hope they see it as a warning and play well tomorrow. Really unexpected outcome...
So many reported posts in the euro threads. Nationalism still brings the worst out of people.

Please, do, we will see who will be the last standing after 6 months. Evidently we have faced much tougher situations than an eco break down(fake and forced as it is) for the last 3 thousand years. Have you? So proud.
Thats nice and all but theres no need to get political in a football thread.
Yes and as i said therefore i edited it ... could you kindly remove the quote also? i tried to excuse myself against the accusation of nationalism and for a moment forgot that its not a good idea ... but anyway: i expect that this match (ger vs. gre) will be hyper political especially with the upcoming vote in greece, all the german hate in greece and everything ... trust me.
Also, Greece won't have their captain also the best player on the team No 10 Giorgos Karagounis in their Quater Final game since he has reach his yellow card limit.

Goal difference is on World Cup. Euro is head to head.

best player... well... i don't know, many will surely feel relieved without Karagounis
Worst outcome for the group possible. The 2 lame teams with the crappiest football come out ahead and will lame it out in the QF. Good job to them, but it sure is disappointing to the neutral fan.

Sucks to be a "neutral fan" now, despite your team being full of star players, doesn't it?

I am German and I want to apologize to the Greek for idiot-comments like this. I think its awesome that you made it. Always rooting for the underdog. Go Greece!
Germany versus Greece probable huh? That's... interesting. Can't fancy Greece's chances. Anyway sucks that Russia is out, they were fun to watch, but congrats to Greece.

Holebas on the other hand...
Like it or not hes the one that cruise the Greece team in this tournament and along with Angelos Charisteas in 2004 Greece surprise run.
I'm really looking forward to Greece vs. Germany now (I assume that is the most probable outcome) I want Greece to win, but it will probably be like Greece vs. Argentina 2 years ago. Germany with 25+ shots, Greece defending the entire game, in the end Germany wins...
Germany deserves an easy opponent after that Group.. but you can never count Greece out. Last night they showed that once again. Really impressive. A super defensive tactic as always but still they were able to create good chances and score while Russia was denied any really good chances (only watched the second half tho). Karagounis' yellow card was a bad call from the ref and I hope it doesn't hurt them too much.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard somewhere that Karagounis set the record for most carded player in Euro with 8. He got 4 yellow in 2004, 2 in 2008, 2 in 2012.

yeah and he dives alot. And I hate him for that.
But yesterday it was a clear penalty. Lets say that the ref got mistaken, and as a strickt ref he decided to give out a yellow.
Minutes later Zhirkov dived and asked for penatly, while he already been booked. The ref told him to get up. Why he didnt get his second yellow?
Is it solely based on their previous matches booking history?
Honestly I prefer Germany over Denmark. If it's Denmark we will become arrogant and take for granted our win over them. With Germany everyone will be at 110%.

I feel your chances against Denmark would be better to be honest.

Greece did well but honestly Russia played worse than a 15 year old team. Except Dzagoev, Izmailov and Malofeev I wouldn't take any of those suckers into my street football team lol They are stars but they didn't care to win and Greece was better by a mile cuz they played hard. When a team walks on the pitch and doesn't want to play football - they shouldn't be on the field. Anyways GL to Greece cuz underdogs work hard for a win which is entertaining to watch.
