Yeah, I see what you mean. Problem is that there is a sizeable number of people who think that anyone who (strongly) disagrees with them on a topic must be literally Hitler. That poisons discussions pretty quickly.

If we're dealing with a society that is receptive to our ideas, sure. If the society is not so receptive, then it needs to be utterly destroyed first.

As far as I am concerned, Trump was merely stating the obvious when talking about killing the families of terrorists. You have to eliminate the terrorists' bases of support to defeat them. The only positive thing to say about that thread is that it at least somewhat contains all the toxicity in one place (but it even fails at that since it spills over in other threads from time to time e.g. here)

maybe the problem is when non-regulars jump into a discussion thread and take everything out of context. discussions have a history and comments should be viewed in light of that history. maybe that's why testie has contributed to the overall shitty torrent-posting in that thread that has made it a deluge of stupid. a year ago the thread seemed more like a roundtable discussion. now there are a bunch of idiots posting banal opinions without bothering to get to know anybody in the thread.

Of course, finding an idea atrocious is a personal thing.
For me, advocating torture, "utterly destroying societies that are not receptive to our ideas" (I quote as it was said) and killing innocent civilians if they are related to bad guys is atrocious. You can get a taste of all the wonderful opinions of xDaunt on the US thread.
But again, some people think that way and I find interesting to see what are the reasoning behind such ideas. I simply have never met in person someone with this kind of opinions, and well, that's what internet is good for. Discussing with people whose point of view is utterly ununderstandable to you and see if you can make sense of what they say.
