We all know those threads "15yo Master Terran", "14 year old high Master Zerg streaming" and so on... ppl a very young age beeing very good has always been something to show off.
Ive been asking myself how things look on the other side, do we haven any older highre level players. Any 30+ or even 35+ master / high master or even gm players?

Boxer is over 30 (and was when he was still active), I'm also fairly sure that White-Ra is over 30.

It's just not likely because even if you were gaming age when original SC came out (like myself) you are just turning 30 THIS year, and you have to assume (unlike me) that you are dedicated enough to still be playing at an elite level.

So you have a small target pool just because of timing, and then you add the other difficulties, I'd be surprised if there were any over 35, and probably just a small number (like white-ra and boxer) who are over 30.

And the fact that by 30 it's a little harder to find 8 hours to play a game vs a 14-17 yo

I think we'll be getting more "old" higher-level players as the current generation ages.

Does this mean that if I'm 28 workin, 7 daz a week n massive amounts of OT, bout 85+ hrs, it's not so bad if I'm a diamond?

I would assume most of the old school BW players are in their 30s and they wouldn't have much of a hard time getting into masters if they tried.

Though i assume the question was on inexperienced players who started their RTS in their late 20s / early 30s and now are Masters / GM, that would be something else! Probably some around Though time is different then

How in the world does this thread not yet have an all caps post about our master of the Universe that is Nestea? Seriously, this guy is 30, has a gf(?) and is still balling.

Other than that, age, being mechanically *worse* and not having a lot of time to play shouldn't prevent you from getting at least to mid masters if you actually try to.

NesTea is married (I think). And liquipedia mentions BoxeR, TheWinD, and NesTea as the three oldest GSL competitors.

I'd preffer not to compar nestea with boxer ... in terms of legendness ... but i'm going offtopic with this.

I'm 44 and I would say that I'm the oldest SC2 player that I know. Of course, I play very casually as I have a full-time job, a wife and 3 kids (12, 10, 7). So, I feel like I'm doing okay as a high gold/low plat player.

My dad is 43 and plays SC2 from time to time during the weekends. It's great to have someone in the family into games that isn't your sibling.

I am 32.

Been struggling to get into masters ever since... been very close sometimes, but i never made it above mid/high diamond (in 2on2 i've been master most seasons, but that doesn't count imo ).
Funny thing is, i've been diamond ever since Beta... i have some Wc3 and also Broodwar background, so i guess i had a little advantage in the start. At least i could "keep up" with diamond ever since, even thou i have limited practice time.

Reasons have been told here already i think. Ofc i cannot practice anymore like when i was 17yo... i got a job, a fiance and bought a house recently... kids are hopefully coming soon too ... and i guess your reflexes and multitasking are also not getting better with times :D

If someone wants to see my struggles, i sometimes stream (especially on weekends):

25, with gf, mortgage.. oh and a dog... I'm mid-masters. Used to be a lot better but as you get older, you just don't have the time to devote to getting better. I struggle some days to find an hour to play. Or I have to play late at night when all the jobs are done! ^^

I'm 31.
Went to a DreamHack!

I'm sure there are many people in Masters/GM that are older. For people around student age (15-18) when the first StarCraft came out, they'll now be 30-33. I'm sure the people that are towards the older age of the spectrum of players will continue to get older (as is wont to happen). Some may stay on! Who knows, WhiteRa may actually hit 50 in 15 years and still be playing.
I will reduce you to a series of numbers.

I have friends who are over 35 and in diamond.

I am a few months shy of 30 (/sadface) and in masters. I don't play often, but occasionally I put a few hardcore weeks in and have no problem going up to high masters. It does take a couple of weeks though, as after a month or two of just playing team games I get really bad :p

I have the distinct advantage of being a hardcore aoe player who spent a few years putting in 40 hour weeks. In my opinion it really just comes down to how much time you can dedicate to improving, and most of the skill is transferable between games.

I'm 27 and the main change I've seen is endurance... I can play Civ for 10 hrs straight, but 2 hrs of sc2 and I start tilting 'cause all of a sudden my macro and micro is off.

My main problem getting back into masters after a long break ^^

So yeah endurance yo :D

I am 32, and trying to get into masters as well. I just dont have the time to break through, as there are periods of time where I can't / dont have the energy to ladder. Sc2 is taxing on the mind and eyes.

We "old" people (I am 30) should start discussing some adult stuff (not THAT kind, you perverts) like back pain, sore skin, difficulties keeping weight low, housing crisis (not that I have any), finding daycare for children (not that I have any), insufficient vacation (not that I haven't enough) and whatnot. After a couple of page, we drive all the teenagers away and can start planning whatever great party we wish without any intruders

I am just sometimes gold sometimes platinum - I used to put my "age" as an excuse, but I come to realize that I am just lazy to practice effectively (which might be a symptom of the age anyway).

Im suprise no one mention Nestea. I think him and Whitera are the only over 30 active pro player atm, I could be wrong.

And like a few people say, its not that older player cant do it as good as the young, it just most older people have other life commitment (work, wife, kids, etc.) that they cannot just shoved aside to improved at starcraft (like high school :p)

I am 32 have a little kid of 10 months and a job. I sometimes find time to play a little sc2. Sometimes even periods of one or two days where I play 10+ games. I used to be plat and now I am back to gold My goal is to reach diamond during a stretch where I can play a little more.

Makes no sense for them to warn/ban.

Person could've said "I agree, this makes sense" instead of "This" and it would've meant the same exact thing to everyone.

I'm mid/low masters and I'll be 31 soon. Its taken me a few seasons to get to Masters, thought I'd be diamond forever. I agree with a few other replies, the older you are the more responsibility you have... which equals alot less time you can devote to a game.

I am 37 now and I was low diamond for a while. Could never get close to masters though.

I think the difference between players like Boxer, Nestea, Whitera and so on is that they started playing RTS games when they were young. I'm sure even in their 50s and 60s those guys will still play at masters level. But I've never met anyone who started playing RTS in their 30s and made it to masters.

Having said that I'm sure I could get to masters if I had unlimited time to devote to the game.

Nice thread idea senfkatze thank you

I think it is really cool to face / come across all ages on sc2 (the funniest part is that you usually find out later)

Ageism is such a huge sad thing ... (and this in both ways .. kids hating on old gamers and old gamers spitting on kids alike)

In france, when we "age grade" stuff like games or comics .. we often say 7"a game for people from 7 to 77 ... I think this "naive" idea is really something that raises the "interest" in a particular game (or other).

If a game is "for 7 to 77", it means that it worth trying it out.

I sure wish that I'll still be able to play at 77

Personally I like old and young people and manage to have fun with both, but i must sadly admit that it is difficult to try to be
a go between both!

lol shit is hilarious. serious business mods

Makes no sense for them to warn/ban.

Person could've said "I agree, this makes sense" instead of "This" and it would've meant the same exact thing to everyone.

Someone with the hammer is just randomly getting annoyed for no reason ;(

"You've been warned." See Rule #3

Posting "This." is just a bad post and gets warned.
Quoting a post warned for the very thing you're doing with the quote is just plain dumb and deserves a fist to the mouth alongside the temp.

When I was younger I always frowned upon my older gamer friends "I'm old ergo I'm not as good anymore." attitude. Now that I'm past 30 myself I find that while my skills haven't actually deteriorated, my competitiveness and with it my motivation to practice/ try real hard has.
When my flatmate offered a bet (and thus motivation) for some arbitrary gaming goal ("bet you can't reach xxxx ranking in x time") I reached said goal way faster than he (or I) thought.

I dunno, I've definitely noticed my manual dexterity drop in the last 10 years (I'm 30 now.)

Even my WPM - which I use pretty regularly - has dropped by ~20 (from ~110 to ~90)

I don't have the availability or the nerves to play competitively anymore. I got my top 30 in US in first few months of SC2 (basically just a transfer of my old BW skills from back in 2000/2001) and that was my signal that even without as much practice, I could still overcome many strong players. I think I needed that for closure to know where I stood when I tried.

I have such an insane NEED to NOT LOSE that it really just isn't worth playing anymore. I had like the 3rd highest ratio of win:loss out of those in those rankings not because I wanted to win, but just because I REALLY didn't want to lose.

When you play this way, there's really no benefit. You either "expect to win," which gives no excitement, or you "hate losing," which only upsets. In the end, even for people way better than me (who have this attitude), there's no reason to play

Ye that really hampers the enjoyment in the game. I can totally relate. I got nowhere as high as you (respect!) but I learned, taht somtimes it is better just to let the other guy win, esp if u are having a insane win streak. Cos then you start becoming a win ratio whore..and that is never good for you.

PapaCool, you are my hero. I'm 40 and have often wondered how ridiculous I'll look when I'm 45 or 50 and still playing SC2 (SC3?). But now I'll just think, yeah, but PapaCool is pushing 60 and still going strong so no big deal.

I actually play a bit with my son (10yrs) and nephew in Oz (he's like 35). We sometimes 4v4 with his kid (6yrs)!

I'm pretty terrible (silver) but I love the game. I like experimenting more than mechanics, though, which pretty much explains my skill ceiling. But I've got nothing to prove so it's all good.

I m 27 and i m playing rts games since i m 17 years old. I was top20 on the EU ladder in wc3 and i used to play on a gm level in sc2. As you get older your reaction time and your speed decreases noticeable. That is why you wont see as much older players in fast paced rts games like sc2, reaction time and speed is key and that is what you lose as you get older.

27, soon 28, was mid master and now i changed race and i`m platinum. I guess age until like 35 does not matter that much, what matters is the time you can put in. job and personal stuff can take away hours from gaming. I still enjoy the game.
I played BW long time ago and compared to that my APM is much lower from 160 to like 100, getting older, and I also get much faster tired, can't really play more then 1-2h in a session.

I'm 36 and still playing like i was a teen, tho i dont have any gf and such that takes up a lot of time, i bet there is lot's of ppl at my age playing at a relatively high lvl tbh. In the near future pro's will be older and older, why not? at least as long you got the reactiontime you need in the game, that will go down with age but i cant imagine that will happen before +40.

Pushin 47 over here.. But love the game.. My son and I are headed for a big showdown at some point. I play Terran and he plays Zerg. I am sure he will outpace his old man very soon. Something about that thing they call a J O B keeps me from spending too much time on this game.. But like I said, I love it!

i was within a year of 30 when this game came out and was GM playing 1-2 hours a day, i know a lot of people at that time who were late 20s and pretty good. If you have that ability to get good at something competitive it will always be there but most people dont have the time or moved on, most of my godly Brood War friends from the old days are diamond in League now just playing casually.

cool to see hte guys who are 40+ chime ini though : )

I think there's alot of older players getting around. The Older Gamers is the largest online gaming community for players over 25 and we have players in our SC2 division of all ages. We are always open to new members too. If you're interested check out http://togsc2.site44.com to see what we have to offer, or our website at http://www.theoldergamers.com

Cheers
