Unlike most people, I didn't hate the WoL campaign so much. If the Terran campaign from BW had been released standalone it too would have looked pretty flimsy - that's just the nature of the Terran campaigns (all three!) as far as I'm concerned. They're obsessed with in-fighting and out to achieve their own personal agenda. I rationalised that the WoL campaign was simply Jim serving his own agenda and playing with toys that he really shouldn't have been (aka the artifact). Recalling that Terrans are easily manipulated (see: Duran and the UED) I figured the artifact had some other purpose. Typical Terrans prodding their heads into an intergalactic conflict where they really shouldn't be. Okay the part where Jim gets all obsessive over Kerrigan annoyed me, particularly after Fenix in BW, but it's at least plausible given that he thought that de-infested Kerrigan and un-infested Kerrigan were separate people. I simply can't provide the same rationalisations to HotS. The first Zerg campaign felt epic, you were out to destroy and assimilate planets - oh and get more powerful. Works for me. But it really felt like you were a part of a bigger war than what the Terrans were fighting. Kerrigan's campaign was easily the highlight in BW, the sheer ruthlessness of her approach to intergalatic diplomacy is one of the most memorable things from SC1. One of the big questions that I thought HotS needed to answer was 'why didn't the zerg crush everything in the 4 years between SC1 and SC2?' why did Kerrigan wait so long before doing anything? This - so far - is unexplained. Another thing I thought needed address is why on earth she was after the Artifact? In theory, Jim and co could have sat back and done nothing and Kerrigan would have claimed at least some of the pieces of the artifact and thereby prevented the resurrection of Amon. So yeah, that still needs to be explained. The levels themselves often felt like clones of WoL maps but then again its an RTS so I guess there isn't much you can do in that regard. I wish you could have physically killed Narud though, rather than resorting to a cinematic death. The levels definitely were wayyy to easy though. So I guess my biggest gripe is with the story - I really wish it was deeper than 'Kerrigan get strong, Kerrigan kill Mengsk!'. Hell. Jim dying and motivating Kerrigan to become a ruthless bitch again would have been incredible. Oh well. | ||
