So i wanted to ask You guys about general trends in regards to hardware prices. Any insight?
Are graphic cards and RAM prices going up, down? Are there any strong indicators?

I don't think things are really moving much. The GPU gouging is down since all the hype post-Christmas, but that mostly just means you can buy things at normal prices. They don't usually change much until the next generation comes out.

RAM prices seem the same. I doubt they'll drop until new factories are built and producing, but I have no idea what the timetable on that is.

My brain tells me not to upgrade my computer because it's still super fast, but come on Intel, release a CPU which fixes Meltdown and Spectre. :D

Hardware:
CPU: i7-5820k
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 980 (MSI Twin Frozr)

Edit: Are Meltdown and Spectre finally patched for real this time?

Spectre at least is a whole class of vulnerabilities which are pretty tricky. Some time 2019-ish there'll probably be 8c16t intel silicon with hardware mitigations on the mainstream which will buy back a lot of the lost performance from meltdown+spectre.

They'll be going against Ryzen 3000's which will be significantly better versions of the current Ryzens that are having a party right now since they didn't suffer the same kind of performance loss.

Core performance gains between Haswell-E and Coffee Lake are already good between the clock speed and IPC gains so a more advanced and exploit mitigated CPU could be substantially stronger still and a major upgrade even on the same core count. Core performance is way more important than core count but both at the same time are always nice!

AMD didn't suffer performance losses from spectre?

Some losses IIRC but nowhere near as large as Intel did from meltdown+spectre. Like on Witcher 3, Intel took a hit like losing 400mhz off the CPU core from Meltdown and 100mhz from Spectre v2 on Coffee Lake hardware, enough to really hurt. I've heard that they took some even greater losses on older hardware and that performance of e.g. SSD's got completely destroyed by the patches.

The combination of those greater losses hitting Intel and the ryzen 2000 series improvements has given AMD a nice lead on some workloads, in some places they're trailing Intel where previously they were non-competitive (some games) or they have landslide wins where they used to be almost to neck and neck (Cinema 4D / Cinebench R15)

Sounds like the spectre performance difference is pretty minimal then? It's the meltdown portion that looks to matter.

Yeah but it's hard to say because sometimes there is no hit to performance and at other times it can be very significant. Spectre is a whole class of vulnerabilities and even one vulnerability related to it can cause big performance hits at times, though not all of them might necessarily need to get patched - it's the ones that can attack people more readily which are huge red flags.

It's a pretty complicated set of problems and i can't keep all of the data about what affects who and by how much in my head accurately enough to quote, so i'l quote wikipedia

The Meltdown vulnerability primarily affects Intel microprocessors,[52] but some ARM microprocessors are also affected.[53] The vulnerability does not affect AMD microprocessors.[19][54][55][56] Intel has countered that the flaws affect all processors,[57] but AMD has denied this, saying "we believe AMD processors are not susceptible due to our use of privilege level protections within paging architecture".[58]

Researchers have indicated that the Meltdown vulnerability is exclusive to Intel processors, while the Spectre vulnerability can possibly affect some Intel, AMD, and ARM processors.[59][60][61][62] However, ARM announced that some of their processors were vulnerable to Meltdown.[53] Google has reported that any Intel processor since 1995 with out-of-order execution is potentially vulnerable to the Meltdown vulnerability (this excludes Itanium and pre-2013 Intel Atom CPUs).[63] Intel introduced speculative execution to their processors with Intel's P6 family microarchitecture with the Pentium Pro IA-32 microprocessor in 1995.[64]

ARM has reported that the majority of their processors are not vulnerable, and published a list of the specific processors that are affected.

Just a couple weeks ago we heard about a new spectre-class vulnerability known as spectre-v4 that even the mitigated intel CPU's (not yet released) are expected to be vulnerable to. It can cause up to 8% performance losses (quoted at 2-8% ) when safeguarded via microcode.

I'm building a system for my kids. They will do office stuff and gaming on the PC. I have some leftover parts (mainly the GPU and Keyboard) that I will use. For the new stuff, I want to build a system that is kinda cheap now but easily upgradeable in the future.

To Buy:
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 3.20 GHz
  • Mainboard: ASRock X370 KILLER SLI
  • RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V (2x, 4GB, DDR4-3200, DIMM 288)
  • PSU: Be Quiet Pure Power 10 CM 500 W - This should allow me to upgrade to a better CPU (Ryzen 7) and GPU (GTX1060) at a later point
  • SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 2,5" 500 GB - I have a NAS for additional Storage
  • Tower: Cooler Master N200
  • Mouse: Logitech G203 Prodigy
  • OS: Windows 10 64Bit Home
  • Monitor: Asus MG248QR

Already present:
  • ASUS GeForce GTX 650 Ti
  • Logitech G610 Keyboard

Questions:
1.) I am unsure about Mainboard and RAM. Considering that I might upgrade this system in 2 or 3 years to a ryzen 7 (and possibly overclock), is the MB and RAM ok for that?
Edit: I just noticed that I could also easily use 2400 RAM instead of 3200. Would that be ok too?

2.) For 3 Dollars more I could get a Ryzen 5 1500X 3.50 GHz instead of the Ryzen 5 1600. I would overclock the 1500. What is the better choice?

The 1600 isn't locked, you can overclock that too. Different CPU models may have different (more or less capable) stock coolers if you weren't planning on replacing that.

Generally stick to 3000+ RAM unless there is a large $$ saving from dropping to lower mhz because it has some performance impacts and would last through multiple CPU's.

Are you sure something like this even exists? I just checked my different suppliers and none have a monitor with 120Hz+ below 23.5".

^

There are very few panels of these sizes that have medium-high PPI's and very few 120hz+ below 1080p.

I've checked a local website yesterday and I think one of the most expensive CPUs was AMD's one with 16 cores for about 1000 euros. Is Intel really behind now?

As always, your posts are not constructive. 16 cores for 1000 euros is a deal if Intel can't provide something better. I think it was 3.4 GHz or better.
