For some editing related workloads they can be but it's complicated and depends a lot on the software + what you're doing with it

Depends on your budget and performance needs.

i5 8400 > i5 8600k > i7 8700k > AMD 1920X > AMD 1950X > i9 79460X-7980XE

For video editing, CPU performance is a lot more useful, there are some tasks that can be GPU accelerated, but CPU will give you improved performance across the board. I'd probably go for a GTX 1060 with an i5, a GTX 1070 or 1070ti with i7's, and a GTX 1080ti with anything above.

Anything higher and you start to lose a lot of performance per dollar, so not really recommended. For the 8700k or less, I'd just buy 2x8GB RAM, and I think it should be enough for most use cases. If not for you, buy two more, you're running in dual channel anyway, so it wont effect your speeds if you end up running 2x8GB. If you go for an enthusiast grade CPU, they'll have quad channel memory, so buying 32GB will be the way to go.

I was removing a motherboard from a computer and when I took out the 8-pin power connector it pulled the plastic shroud halfway off. Should I just push it back down in place? It's going to require a lot of force. The pins themselves are fine.

Nevermind, I was able to rock it back into place without much force.

Hey everyone, I was looking for some advice on a new upper-end gaming rig that I want to build. My budget is at most $1,400, and while I have yet to pick out a monitor I only plan on playing and streaming at 1080p (MMORPG games like Black Desert Online, FFXIV and Path of Exile, with Monster Hunter World and Bless Online in the future).

The only catch is that I now live in Japan (Kansai) and cannot utilize newegg and as such some of the parts may cost more than they do elsewhere, at least from what I've seen on amazon.co.jp. I've been out of the loop for quite a few years regarding hardware and any advice would be appreciated.

Also, I overclocked my previous rig and it was quite a hassle for a non-tech savvy person such as myself to get the voltage stable (it would fail to power up multiple times) so I was wondering if it is really necessary on a gaming/streaming rig with the newer processors for sale today. recently the ryzen lineup got price drops and a hardware vulnerability was discovered that notably hurts performance on many CPU's, way more so for Intel. The r5 1600 and r7 1700 (or similar sku's if the price is close enough) are strong choices.

The CPU that you linked is a last gen i5 so it's only 4c4t. Current gen i5 is 6c6t; those Ryzen CPU's are 6c12t and 8c16t.

For GPU-bound gaming, maybe - but CPU performance didn't matter there anyway.

Other stuff is up in the air - some reports of CPU heavy games taking significant hits even on current gen. Haswell losing 9% performance in x264 (main encoder for OBS, Handbrake) just from the microcode update for spectre v2 and before the OS changes for Meltdown which are also huge. Reports of people losing a quarter to half of their random read IOPS on SSD's across all CPU's; it's all worrying stuff and still partially unknown at the moment.

^This is a CPU limited section of Witcher 3 w/ a coffee lake CPU showing ~8.2% higher performance before meltdown fix.

The nature of these losses also mean that all previous review stats have to be called into question, it's way harder for somebody to make an informed choice because almost all of the information out there is wrong; sometimes it's basically correct, sometimes a little bit wrong, sometimes it's waaay off what you can actually do or get now and you can't reliably sort A from B from C without just re-doing all of the reviews.

As a whole it significantly hits the value of all relevant Intel products, you can't just hand wave it away for a gaming system and with the simultaneous pricedrop on Ryzen they're far harder to recommend than they were only a week or 2 ago.

I was under the impression that a gaming rig didn't need more than 4 cores but I suppose streaming is pretty demanding in its own right. Is this processor strictly an upgrade when compared to the 1600?

As far as the GPU is concerned is a gtx 1060 overkill? It's about the same price as the gtx 960(?) was when I purchased it a year and a half ago.

Streaming will use as much CPU as you can throw at it. It fully utilizes multithreading.

Yeah, it's like a 1600 but with 8 cores instead of 6

the 8400/8600k/8700k are available on there and are still ok options, just less good than they used to be. They're faster for some games but with less CPU left over for streaming since the fewer cores are more effectively utilized by games

Hi guys, after 9 years I have decided it's time for a new desktop PC. I will use my PC for photo-editing (lightroom, photoshop) and occasional gaming. I dont need highest settings in the newest games, but smooth performance (in both, photo-editing and gaming) would be nice.

What is your budget?
Around 1000€ (for PC only)

I'm ok with 1920x1080, though i'm still looking for a monitor and am open for suggestions.

I think he is more talking about Spectre issues there.

There is no 'fix' for either issue, until new CPUs are designed. Meltdown has been patched. His rant is about Intel trying to twist the spectre (I think) patches into a 'boosted security opt-in feature, that can affect performance' from what they really are, and should be, a 'broken cpu patch'

Can someone explain how 6 or 8 pin PCI-e adapters (molex or SATA) are a thing? 6-pin are used for up to 75W draw and 8-pin for 150W. The connectors for SATA are rated at 1.5A (30W). Molex connectors are rated at 8A (18 AWG) or 10A (16 AWG), which is 96W / 120W. The wires for both are rated for higher than the connectors, which makes sense since they're usually chained.

Molex I can at least see being used for a 6-pin, but SATA is woefully below that and 8-pin adapters exist for molex as well. How are these not failing left and right and leading to lawsuits?

How long do you think it's going to take before Intel starts selling CPU without Spectre and Meltdown faults? Is there news about that? Is late 2018 correct?

No desktop PC for a few days because I'm shipping it to a different country. I'm an i5-2410M peasant now. No CS: GO, no StarCraft... :D Also, laptop loses internet connection after a minute or two when it has Cat7 wired connection. No idea why, but wireless internet seems to be acceptable. I guess laptop is too outdated to support Cat7 or is experiencing a fault.
