If you think playing next gen games on ultra is a possibility for you in the near future, take the 6gb.

There were a small handful of new games the day i bought my 970 that exceeded 3.5GB of VRAM when maxed @1080p; that was over two years ago. Usually the heavy VRAM usage is in settings like textures that you can turn down, but it's something to keep in mind. Some of those settings do not affect the GPU usage much but rely heavily on memory capacity (textures ultra vs medium may see double the VRAM usage but no significant FPS change)

sry for not replying to some previous stuff^

Yeah i think i got stuck in the era where 2Gb for 1080 was overkill, and 3Gb would probably be fine if not for last gen consoles ><

My reasoning was that by the time he'd get use of more than 3Gb, it would require settings that the card can't even handle.
But i guess games are less and less optimized for pc nowadays...

Hell i don't think i've ever heard of so many bad pc port lauches in a single year...

Using more RAM rather than having it sit idle or not having higher settings available is good, in the 2005 console era we had games like Skyrim which looked shit and had severe technical limitations because they had to work with 512MB of RAM but with the 2013 console gen more devs are happy filling out 8GB (between system RAM and video RAM)

What do you intend to do with it? Games? What settings? If you are on a budget why the k suffix processor? Do you need to overclock? Could save money and put it into gpu.

depending on your budget and use cases, but the above are pretty good last gen stuff, and even though they are last gen they should last you for quite a while, except the gpu may need earlier upgrade, again depending on use cases

the reason is upgrading and want to get a cheap CPU. My current mobo is dying and it's using an AMD A10 CPU. I have a friend willing to sell me for cheap his processor that's why I'm also asking what's the best mobo to put it in along with my current parts.

purpose is just for gaming, hoping to run up to date AAA titles in decent settings (medium to high)

well then a few points,

- the 4690K is big upgrade from A10 and really good for gaming and will definitely last you around 2-3 years ++++ if overclocked, depending on the AAA titles. Since this is 2nd hand from your friend for cheap, I guess the option is pretty much locked, so even if it eats into your budget quite a bit, it's still a solid choice with overclocking potential.
- Mobo - ASRock Z97 Pro4 ATX Motherboard: Indeed get a Z97 mobo to enable overclock. However since the Z97 series are out of production, you may have very limited choices. IIRC overclocking on Z97 has some dependencies on the VRM design, so quality might be an issue. The current option is still decent nonetheless, can refer to this for more info. or summon @Cyro for input :p I only roughly remember stuff about this, so take it with half a grain of salt and wait for Cyro :p. But anyway, if you are on the budget, this mobo is still good enough.
- you say you only upgrade cpu and mobo, so the GTX960 is already purchased right? Actually I faintly remember you asked about buying the GTX960 some time ago.
-Need to add some aftermarket cooler if overclock

Hey guys,

(I post on behalf of a friend)

What is your budget?
600€

What is your monitor's native resolution?
I gonna buy a monitor, cause i dont have one at the moment, I think I need a DVI 1080p IPS, is this a good one plz : Asus VC239H 23.0" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
I want to play mostly starcraft 2 and diablo on this pc. With low-medium settings.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
No, but eventually stream on low resolution

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
No

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Just the monitor as stated.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Germany

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
No.

So I did read the recent request close to mine, and I did make a pcpartpicker build here :
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JXbkWX
Could you please check it and tell me if anything can be optimized or if anything wrong ?
Because I do only play intensive CPU game, and not GPU oriented, do you think I can take a lower GPU and maybe a better CPU or MoBo ?
I am afraid the MoBo lack quality on the sound card (feedbacks I read about mic being way way lower to the normal on this type of MoBo)

Also, any advise on WLAN integrated cards for common German WiFi (fritzbox 7490 from 1&1)

And for the purchase, as a German, should I use pcpartpicker integrated "buy links" or any other retailer advise please ?

Because we are impatient kids, we did buy this prebuilt computer :
https://www.snogard.de/produkte/SNOGARD-GamingLine/SYSTEM-GL4577/GamingLine-i3-6100-SSD-RX460.html

Thanks anyways, mainly to Cyro for his help (in PM)

Just out of curiosity, do laptops with desktop CPU work properly or do they overheat? I was checking prices yesterday. As expected, good quality laptop costs a lot.

That's gonna vary by the laptop, you'll just have to check reviews. Worst case is generally they lack proper ventilation and throttle down because of heat.

Yeah, LOTS of variation between laptops. Many of them throttle even with Mobile or ultra-low-power CPU's because they scale down the cooling capability more than they should have done for the power level

I am needing a new computer for presentations. We'll be using software like ProPresenter and want a good solid PC to handle it. How is the following build? Would I be able to take off the GPU and just use the i5 graphics? Or would it be easier to downgrade CPU and upgrade GPU?

What is your budget?
Around 400€, can be more, would prefer less.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
Old monitor 1920x1200 resolution, not looking to buy a new one

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
CS GO, all kinds of moba, Civilization V-VI, World of Warcraft, no new AAA stuff, mostly multiplayer games.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Basic work, nothing demanding.

Do you intend to overclock?
No.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
No.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
Would prefer intel processor.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Lithuania.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
I will buy parts from a friend who orders them for wholesale prices, so specific prices or retailers don’t really matter.

I want to buy a new computer for a friend. I already have GPU http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-550ti/specifications (I know it is old, but it is good enough for games she plays right now and I will look into upgrading it later), ssd 250 GB http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/storage-ssd-mx200 and relatively old monitor 1920x1200 resolution. Main thing I need is decent motherboard and processor as other things I can upgrade/add later. I am thinking about 8GB ram and 1TB hdd. As I will buy through my own sources, I don’t need specific prices. Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks for help.

Hey, I'm kind of looking for a new gaming PC, despite not being a hardcore gamer anymore I still like to play games. Unfortunately, my current rig from 2012 does not really cut it anymore for anything heavier than sc2 pretty much

What is your budget?
1000-1300 euros

What is your monitor's native resolution?
I've got a dual Dell 3007WFP setup, which can run 2560x1600 per monitor at 60hz (5120x1600 total). Requirements on graphics card should be at least 1x duallink DVI-D + miniDP, in case I'll transfer the monitors over to my old PC

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Due to having an old rig I didnt look too much into newer games due to not being able to run it too much, but would like a system that can run the newer games for 3 years on ultra settings

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Would like to be able to run a few virtual windows server 2012r2s on it for educational purposes, I guess these dont have to run during gaming though

Do you intend to overclock?
slightly

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
not for now, would like to have the option for later when gpu becomes cheaper.

Do you need an operating system?
no

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
CDROM drive - part of budget

I'll also need a active dual DVI-D to miniDP adapter and a mechanical keyboard, but these are not part of budget.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
none

What country will you be buying your parts in?
the Netherlands - standard EU pricing applies. As a reference, I'm guessing a USD $1k PC costs roughly 1200 euros here.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
no

Hi guys,
Can a kind soul try and help me out please?
So I'm having problems with running games.
I recently did a clean install of windows 10 after getting a new ssd. And I've noticed that my games have been having trouble running in fullscreen mode. It takes a really long time for games to load (it looks like it is having trouble switching to "full screen mode"). And it sometimes has trouble exiting a game. This is most pronounced in Witcher 3. When full screen is selected, loading the game takes longer than usual. And it takes a while to exit (if not outright freezing), with the sound usually "carrying over" to the windows session after the game closes. In windowed borderless, the exiting problem is completely solved, but it still takes a longer time to load. GTA V doesn't have problems with exiting, and switching to windowed borderless completely solves the issue of long load time when the game is launched.
During the game session, everything runs fine, but the hiccup is still annoying considering I expected everything to run perfectly after a clean install.
I've already reinstalled nvidia drivers. I truly believe it is windows that is the issue. Weird thing is I was already running windows 10 before doing the clean install and never ran into this issue before.
Finale note: I'm still running the games from my hdd. I've tried Witcher 3 on the ssd and load times are almost the same (i.e. the longer load time for the hdd vs ssd is nothing in comparison to the annoying waiting time for the "switch to fullscreen")
Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm looking to build a PC for myself some time in January 2017. This will be my 1st time building it myself, and not buying a premade from Dell or such. I have nailed down a lot of parts, and others I have narrowed down to a few options and need some guidance there. Help me decide :-)

What is your budget?
6000 PLN / 1350 EUR / 1400 USD

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920 x 1080, BenQ RL2450H

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
DOTA 2, Civilization VI, upcoming RPGs (Cyberpunk 2077, ME: Andromeda etc.), shooters (Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2 and newer)

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Work. Translations, googling, writing in word and excel.

Do you intend to overclock?
Yes. I am aiming to OC both the CPU and GPU.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
Not immediately. Might consider in the future (2-3+ years).

Do you need an operating system?
I have Windows 7 on CDs, so no.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Might buy another 24'' monitor to go dual monitors. If you can convince me to not buy an OC CPU and GPU.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
None.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Probably Poland. Might order from amazon.de or amazon.fr if they'll be willing to ship. So far looked only for polish retailers.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Not really, no.

My current rig: + Show Spoiler +
It's a Dell bought back in 2011. A lot of things are starting to die or are very old. HDD died, motherboard died, power supply needed a change, switched out the stock GPU which was pretty bad for a GeForce GTX 770. All replaced throughout the years. I think I just had about enough of replacing individual parts, and want a clean slate. The motherboard and DDR2 RAM isn't getting any younger. The rig is loud and slow by now, despite defragmentation and clean installs.

What I want in my new rig: + Show Spoiler +

Processor
Intel Core i7-6700K, 4.0 GHz ideally. Willing to downgrade it i7-6700 or even i5-6600K.
Cooler
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, or better if you can name one for a reasonable amount.
Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-Z170X-ULTRA GAMING
ASUS Maximus VIII Hero (Alpha?)
ASUS Z170-A
Graphics card
SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 480 8GB DDR5 NITRO +OC, I don't really know the brands and how they differ. If you can suggest better than Sapphire, please do.
Memory
has to be 16GB, 2x8
Corsair Vengeance or G.Skill Ripjaws V, 2666 MHz or 3000 MHz (saw a good deal on the 3000s)
Storage
1 Samsung 850 EVO SSD 2.5'', either 250GB or 500GB (leaning towards a 500GB)
1 WD Blue or Black HHD, 1TB, 7200 rpm, 64MB cache (leaning towards a Blue)
Power Supply
Corsair RMx 650W
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 80+ Gold/Bronze
Case
Again, this is a hard choice for me. I have a few favourites though.
NZXT Phantom 410 Series
Corsair Carbide Series 400C or 200R
Aerocool XPredator II
PHANTEKS Eclipse P400S or Enthoo Pro
CM Storm Stryker - White.

Again, I am willing to not OC if you can convince me its not needed. I have never really seriously done it before, and quite frankly am afraid to start. But I want a PC that will last another 5+ years, so I'm willing to pay for the parts now if I can squeeze out a little more juice out of them down the line. I don't plan to upgrade from this set up at least for 3+ years, and after that, maybe only a newer graphics card if at all. Or put 2 of these Sapphires 480s in CrossFire.
I need the most help with choosing the motherboard and the case. I just want to be sure everything will fit. Also I heard the Sapphire graphics card is good, but if you can argument getting an ASUS or MSI I wouldn't mind changing my mind. Now that I think about it, alternatives for the cooler and the power supply would also be appreciated.

Thank you and sorry for the long post.

So my motherboard is dying on me and I need one asap, it's been a few years since I last looked at them and bought my current one. Not too sure what to get atm, especially seeing as I have DDR3 ram I'd like to salvage from my current setup and it seems most of the motherboards recommended nowadays all have DDR4 slots which isn't compatible.

Upgrading my processor at this time as well, so it needs to be compatible with it as well. My GPU is a regular PCI E 3.0 slot, don't plan on ever doing dual GPU. Just standard 1080p gaming on my single monitor and hardwired ethernet, doesn't need to be wifi or Bluetooth. Don't care about OC at all or flashy designs, will be in my case away from view 99% of the time.

Mid size case no liquid cooling.
CPU: 6th gen Intel i7-6700k (I know overkill, got it for $120 though through my work lol)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 670 2gb
Ram: 2x4 8GB DDR3 1600hz
PSU: Thermaltake 650w
HDD: 128GB SSD, 2TB WD HDD

So basically my question is, do they make a decent motherboard that has DDR3 slots but also fits a 6th gen Intel CPU? I can upgrade my ram if necessary but I'd like to keep it and save some money because it's perfectly good. Trying to do some research atm and going through boards on newegg so any help is much appreciated.
