Hello dear TL fellows,
As everyone here, I'm willing to build a new computer, and would need your help.

What is your budget?
My budget is about €1000.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?

Heroes of the storm, LotV

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?

Youtube and twitch?

Do you intend to overclock?
Why not? Already have a Hyper 212 evo.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?

I'm not sure. I have a win7 from MSDNAA (dreamspark premium) but I'm no more a student. Can I use it again for a clean install?

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Is something like a real gaming motinor usefull in this budget? G-sync is shitty expensive right? Beside that, I already have a monitor

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I'm looking for a silent rig. Was thinking about a fractal define case or something similar.
Also looking for a SSD, as I intend to use my actual 1To HDD for storage.
Moreover, I found a i5 6500 for 197€ today and bought it. But I can get a refund if you guys find a better solution.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
France

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.

LDLC.com (great after-sales service but expensive), cdiscount.com (great price but inexistent after-sales service), materiel.net (in between).

Thank you

What other parts do you have? GPU etc.

CPU is what you build around for those games. They both run better on i3 than lower clocked i5 (which should be cheaper too) but you can probably afford a 6600k setup in the budget which would be ~30-45% faster than a 6500

Rergarding GPU, I was thinking about r9 390 or GTX 970, at the same price. I heard that AMD GPU are not fully ready Directx12 atm, is that right?
Regarding CPU, is the 6600k necessary? I don't want to spend money for the sake of spending money. If the 6500 is enough, then I'll keep it.
Also, SSD 850evo 256go for cheap at the moment (82€). Is it any good?

The 850 evo is pretty great (avoid 840 or 840 evo)

6600k isn't "neccesary" but it performs better than an i3 or locked i5 and sc2 and heroes both run fairly badly (sc2 worse more often as it's more likely to have more units being simulated) so the performance difference is very notable. For those games alone, you may want to use an i3 6100 - 6320 to save money as they perform better than the lower tier i5's and are cheaper than the i5 6600.

970 and 390 are not just overkill for sc2, but overkill by 2-5x on max settings and 10x on med settings. They'll have no better minimum FPS than a gtx460 because of waiting for the CPU, so buying a graphics card anywhere near that tier would be entirely for other games.

dx12 drivers are nowhere near mature for either side which isn't a surprise considering we will have a library of 0-2 decent dx12 games this year

Thank you for the help.
As I don't want to be limited in my games choice, I will go for the following list:

What I already have:
- 1To WD blue HDD
- 23" 1920*1080 shitty screen
- Hyper 212 evo (compatibility with 1151 socket?)
- OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W (not sure if I should keep it or not, advice welcome).

I don't really recommend closed-box style silent cases with the highest power draw GPU's. If you only care about idle noise then they're great but they're bad for airflow. The GPU at load is often the loudest thing in a setup by a mile and choking it of airflow can easily cause more noise than you're saving, particularly on those ~250-300w @ load GPU's.

AFAIK, the 212 should work fine with 1151 - the compatibility is all the same between 1150, 1155, 1151, 1156 etc(?). It's also fine for a 6600k as they're very cool.

To keep it easier and don't spam the thread I'll edit my previous post until we reach final rig.
What I still really don't know about is the mobo/ram.
Also, again, should you have any suggestions for case I'll be happy to hear it.
And thx again!

@SChlafmann for RAM, anything ~3000c15 / 3200c16 is fine. I have a VIII Hero motherboard which is popular and good but also probably higher priced than some others. There are definately quite a few bad z170's (some examples are even missing LLC and having 0.07v of droop on vcore..) - you could ask in this thread maybe - http://www.overclock.net/t/1570313/skylake-overclocking-guide-with-statistics

------

@Taelshin

can get a 6600 instead of 6600k. I think that's cheaper and comes with a stock cooler (6600k doesn't) but confirm those

don't need d15

can't clock RAM any higher than ~2133 so you may want to save a little $$ and get 2133 RAM

can use pretty much any mobo, don't need a decent z170 board if you're not overclocking

power consumption would probably be well under 300w from the PSU. A good 450w unit would be great

In Define R5's defense, you can always open the front door to allow more air intake during heavy usage. Other than that I have tried some stuffy case with sound dampening foam like Define R5, NZXT H440, or some without it like Bitfenix Prodigy, with both GTX970 and R9 390, and honestly I can barely hear any sound. There is a faint hump of the exhaust fan, but it will be there no matter what as long as you have an exhaust fan. As for GPU fan, the Sapphire R9 390 run pretty quiet so far in the Prodigy case. Basically anything that is not Intel stock cooler are pretty quiet, even CM jetflo fan at max speed is not as low T__T

It really depends on what your sister plans to use the PC for? If she is not using it for heavy task, follow Cyro's advice and lower the spec of some components i.e motherboard, cooler, ram and gpu can help save a lot

@Cyro
Wow, that is expensive. I wouldn't thought the difference between an i5 6500 and 6600k would cost me that much. I am not sure what to think at the moment.I heard skylake non-k were able of overclock (bclk only). Is it possible to gain few hundreds Mhz with that? Would fit my need at a much cheaper price in the end as I am not looking for crazy high OC.

@bluegarfield
Thank you for the feedback. The Define R5 looks really great to me but now I am a bit scared since Cyro's reply.

I am not sure what to think at the moment.I heard skylake non-k were able of overclock (bclk only). Is it possible to gain few hundreds Mhz with that? Would fit my need at a much cheaper price in the end as I am not looking for crazy high OC.

Maybe a very small amount, like 100mhz. A few people have managed more with some unknown tweaks but you can't expect to buy a non-k chip and get any notable overclock

What are your temps and fan speeds like on both stock and OC? Any GPU makes a lot of noise @300w

Hi, I'm in need of some upgrading advice.

My current rig:
+ Show Spoiler +

i7-2600k oc:d
Scythe Mugen 2 rev B
Asus P8Z68-V PRO
Gainward Phantom GTX 570
4x4 GB ram
Samsung SSD 850 EVO
XFX Pro 650W Core edition

I'm on a 1080p monitor and are currently playing games like Witcher 3 and wishes to be able to do so on higher settings with decent fps (around 60). I'd want to be able to play other games like the coming Deus Ex and Tomb raider on higher settings as well. I don't have a limit on budget but I'd prefer not spending much more than I have to if it doesn't yield reasonable benefits.

The question is if it's worth upgrading just the gpu or if more of a full upgrade with new cpu, mobo as well and if so what parts you'd recommend? I'm not really sure when my processor will be the bottleneck compared to the graphics card. I'd be up for a full build if the benefit is large enough. SLI/Crossfire is not needed but it would be nice to be able to oc the cpu but not absolutely necessary.

The rig would mostly be used for gaming and other ordinary work tasks. I'll be buying any parts from sweden, usually from sites like inet.se, webhallen.com, netonnet.se or whatever is the cheapest for the day.

2600k's are still very good, a 6700k would win out by about ~20-40% in typical workloads (usually ~30 in cpu limited games) which is a nice performance boost but doesn't really decide if a game is playable or not, it just makes it run better if it's challenging for the CPU.

By comparison, it's easy to blow a 570 out of the water with GPU's like this being at the high end - http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1444?vs=1496 - and stuff much faster coming in the middle of next year (1.5x++ performance improvement)

Everything else looks excellent in your system, might be worth a CPU upgrade in 1-3 yrs to get faster cores and get 6 of them.

There's nothing wrong with the Fractal Design Define R series of cases, in fact they're great and there's no problem achieving good cooling performance with them.

can't remember exactly, have to ask my friend to run some bench and monitor the temp. Has been some time since I last visit his place to do the oc. but iirc it was around 65c-75c for both cpu and gpu when play games. but there are like 4 intakes and 2 exhaust fans, running at low speed by using the fractal fan controller thing.

will try to get some number whe my friends are free. but I guess silent or not is more subjective, can't hear much of the pc when there is an air conditioner or room fan growling in the room. barring winter season or something, i feel environment noise come from those are more noticeable than the pc

@Cyro, Thanks for the advice on the reference r9 290. I just received the card and now I can play Witcher 3 at 1080p with everything on Ultra. After setting up a custom fan profile, so far temps only ever reach 70-75 Celsius. The noise honestly isn't that bad with the reference cooler even with the fan at 70-80%, and for the cost of 90$ it was well worth it compared to the 390 and 970. Thanks again Cyro.
