Best to just come up with a list of things you want to be able to do and to be able to plug in and start from there. Builds usually start with the CPU since the socket there determines the motherboard and RAM options (e.g. DDR3 vs DDR4).

It sounds a lot like when I had a CPU that wasn't compatible with my motherboard on the BIOS revision it had. Wouldn't POST from what I could tell - no beeps even with a mobo speaker. Everything else powered up, but no picture from anything.

I did get a single beep POST though, so it should all be working fine.

Really something just doesn't add up. At this point I'd suspect the motherboard, but you say it gives a successful POST beep. Your manual usually covers the beep codes just to be sure it matches what you're hearing (e.g. long vs short). Did you post a part list somewhere?

When you say you "cycled through" the inputs, does that mean you were changing the monitor's expected input (from the monitor buttons) to match what you had plugged in? If you still get no video, your motherboard probably has an issue. Make sure you're fully turning off and unplugging your computer when removing and installing parts as well.

What was alarming about the reviews? (I just read one of your previous posts - what do you find strange about "noise muffling" cases? Of course some components are quieter than others, but a sound dampening case is a great place to start if noise is a big concern.)

When I looked at them in early 2010 they all seemed to have terrible airflow which is not now the case it seems. I am actually considering the Fractal Design Define R5 which is a noise reducing case. As for Windows 10 compatibility, the ASUS site only lists nine Z170 boards as Windows 10 compatible (if I am reading it right). http://www.asus.com/microsite/mb/Windows_10/ I may just be overthinking it at this point. Reading review after review on NewEgg where even the 4/5 egg ratings say it is great except the BIOS made me doubt them. I will keep doing my research.

Looking on newegg, amazon, theres just so freaking many that I'm having trouble deciding. Any suggestions on top brands? This won't be used for gaming. Mostly work (excel type stuff) and watching streams/movies, etc. Would prefer something that won't slow down by having multiple programs open

How much of an exponential increase in fps do you project Pascal to bring for modern games? Will it make 4k viable for gaming?

Oh, bluegarfield already got me a base build to work off of, whatever I end up with is likely to be just fine with the info I have so far. I just like to prepare extra when I can.

Bent pins usually happen from being too forceful with the CPU or wrenching too hard on the heatsink when it's attached (like twisting it).

I was thinking of maybe updgrading to new XPS 15 with 6th gen i7 and 960m or maybe buying some Clevo (eyeing this) or Razer Blade (i7420HQ, 970m...reading more actually seems gets pretty loud as well which I'm definitely trying to avoid). Occasionally outside this I run some ides and VMs but don't use laptop much otherwise...really just want good, quiet SC2 performance plus sometimes I play Civ5/Dota. My questions are: 1) Anyone have exp playing sc2 on new xps 15 (most portable out of the 3 laptops I'm considering). 2) Thoughts on buying Clevo (looking to buy model at around 2k with i76700, 980m, 4k screen) vs said xps 15 3) If I bought Sagar, thoughts on buying it at Xoiticpc (reputable?) 4) Other laptops I should be considering? Would any of these be good enough to upgrade for (got current laptop on sale and have a friend willing to buy mine so I'd be eating about 900 dollars between buying it 1.5yr ago on sale and selling it now). edit: hope you don't mind me posting in computer thread, can repost in its own thread but thought people here might also be somewhat knoweldgeable re laptops).
