Potentially a big leap over current gen (like over double 980ti) but could be less. Seems pretty much guaranteed to be decent as it's going from 28nm to 16nm, making architectural improvements that are supposed to bring big performance increases and then doubling memory bandwidth. The capacity gain (12GB max to 32GB max) is a nice side effect, though we'll probably top out at 16GB for the gaming cards and maybe even have 8 to save on cost
Every time graphics cards get twice as fast, games get a lot more demanding too. For example, a 980ti being able to run Crysis easily at 4k doesn't help when Crysis 3 has been out for ages. We're going to get more and more demanding games as we always do, month after month.

sc2 is graphically light; 460 handles it fine @ max, cpu limited at times of low FPS. A lot of people use phenom II x4's or equivelant/weaker CPU's - for example Intel CPU's from before 2009 or any AMD CPU. The only stuff quite a lot faster is the intel 2011-2015 CPU's

I have 2013 xps15 fully specced, but it sounds like a jetplane every time I play SC2 so I've dropped all setting to low and it still not great. I was thinking of maybe updgrading to new XPS 15 with 6th gen i7 and 960m or maybe buying some Clevo (eyeing this) or Razer Blade (i7420HQ, 970m...reading more actually seems gets pretty loud as well which I'm definitely trying to avoid). Occasionally outside this I run some ides and VMs but don't use laptop much otherwise...really just want good, quiet SC2 performance plus sometimes I play Civ5/Dota. My questions are: 1) Anyone have exp playing sc2 on new xps 15 (most portable out of the 3 laptops I'm considering). 2) Thoughts on buying Clevo (looking to buy model at around 2k with i76700, 980m, 4k screen) vs said xps 15 3) If I bought Sagar, thoughts on buying it at Xoiticpc (reputable?) 4) Other laptops I should be considering? Would any of these be good enough to upgrade for (got current laptop on sale and have a friend willing to buy mine so I'd be eating about 900 dollars between buying it 1.5yr ago on sale and selling it now). edit: hope you don't mind me posting in computer thread, can repost in its own thread but thought people here might also be somewhat knoweldgeable re laptops).
While I don't have an xps 15, if i was looking for a gaming laptop, I would go look at MSI, they have a ton of selections ranging from different tier graphics card to even size of the laptop itself. The Razer blade is overpriced by a lot. Clevo is pretty decent.

Ok, I've done a little more research, and would I be correct in concluding that at my price range and usage there really isn't any CPU competitive with the Xeon E3-1231? It's basically that and only that?
Also, it looks like there isn't a Skylake option that reasonably fills the 1231 role?

yeah the xeon basically gives you i7 level of performance at i5 prices, but no overclocking capabilities (if youre not going to do that anyway then that comes with bonus reliability and silence) Multithread beast, singlethread lags behind overclockable, priced with a premium i7's

Yeah, at that price point e3-1231 v3 is pretty much your best choice. There is no skylake version of xeon at the moment, and skylake costs quite a lot more anyway

Ok, locking in the CPU makes that easy to figure out!
Playing with the RAM a little (not much to save here, really, I was just trying to optimize) earned me this compatibility note: "The G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory operating voltage of 1.6V exceeds the Intel Haswell Refresh CPU recommended maximum of 1.5V+5% (1.575V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.5V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum."
Is that something I would need to actually pay attention to? It seems odd to me for the RAM voltage to be an issue like that.
Also, I forgot to include a DVD drive at first (for which I feel slightly silly), so that's $15~ I'm working in as well.
How would the Radeon 285 stack up to the 380 in practice? As things are now the price difference is very small, but if there happens to be some big discount on a 285 it looks like it's nearly equivalent?
Lastly, have mail-in rebates become any less of a pain? I recall them not being honored a couple of times for me on previous builds.

not entirely sure about the ram warning, but I ignored it last time I built and had no issue so far. The problem is Xeon E3-1231v3 is a non-overclocking cpu, and you dont want to overclock either, and the budget is limited, so motherboard choice should be H97 series instead of Z97 series, and H97 series only support RAM up to 1600MHz, so no point buying anything higher speed.
R9 380 is basically a rebranded 285 with higher clock speed, and it may be 5%+ better. If price difference is minimal, I think I will just buy the 380 since it's newer. Depending on 285 discount though. But just get the new card may be?
no idea about mail-in rebates

Ah, the 2133MHz RAM just happened to be the cheapest option in this case. Would it downclock to 1600? Or would native 1600 perform better?
|
2133MHz is enabled through XMP. So as long as you don't go to BIOS to enable XMP, by default it will run at 1600MHz 1.5V. So if this is the cheapest option may as well just get this one

Welp, almost screw up my own build. Didnt check PSU clearance for Bitfenix Prodigy case, and almost go with SF Leadex psu, which is like 180mm long compared to the 160mm clearance. watched some youtube and apparently even 160mm long psu has hard time going in. Now kinda screwed because smallest psu available here are Seasonic and CM V series, both are 160mm T_____T

Current PC's giving me a lot of problems. Want to build one, and would a list of parts to help me accomplish my goals.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What I'm looking for is a computer that can Capture and play the latest games at at least 1080p/60fps at maxed settings, and stream at at least 720p/60fps (preferrably also at 1080/60, but not required). At the same time, if possible. Game at 1080, or maybe even 1440p at maxed settings when I'm not capturing/streaming.
My current crap computer's been giving me a lot of problems lately. Lately, when I'm doing something even a little memory intensive like watching a Twitch stream, the audio stutters and the computer freezes. Can't move the mouse, or use ctrl alt del, so it requires a manual restart. Decided that I want a computer that can capture/stream more quickly now, as I've been wanting one since SC2 was released, but have been unable to afford it, or really need a new computer for non-work purposes until now.
I don't know how much that's going to cost me, but I want try and get a ballpark figure so I can start saving towards a goal now. I want at least an i7 quad core of some sort. I also want to Overclock. Other than that, I don't have much I REALLY want to have.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
Basically, I don't really know how much I'm going to spend yet. I would like to know the parts that can accomplish my goals above and would like an estimate as to how much it's going to cost me. Go over options, etc.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Whenever I can get the money to. Probably on Cyber Monday, which is why I'm posting this here now so I can get suggestions throughout the week.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)
Don't include anything else other than the parts for the computer itself.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US, Southern California. And yes I have access to a Microcenter.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I am interested in OC'ing both.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
500 GB SSD. As mentioned above, want at least a Quad Core i7 of some sort, and probably at least 16GB of RAM.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Probably a mid-tower or full-tower of some sort. No color preferences.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Nope.
Extra info or particulars: Thanks for any help you can provide me with.

How do they look to you? How do they compare, and which one should I go with and why?

Uh yeah that's what I meant lol
And yes I've ran SC2 on it fine.

I'd go with this one http://pcpartpicker.com/p/QBkVNG mostly cause it has a pretty good liquid cooler that can oc better than the evo 212 and has skylake. may want to get ddr4-3000 memory but meh, not too much difference at the end.
The thing is that you can get a computer that does what you want ranging from 1300-1800. It's not like you need an i7 for streaming and since you only want 60 fps on 1080p resolution, then you don't necessarily need a fury x or 980 ti but those are really good cards for future proofing.

Anyway owns a Corsair Air 240 case? How well does the GPU i/o clipping mechanism (as opposed to screw) work? I want to get that case but that clip seems flimsy and the GPU seems to wobble a lot T_T

^ RIP T____T I want a cube case but wobbling is something I cant stand. I guess I have to go back to CM HAF XB any other cube that is worth looking at?
