not likely coming, but there will be pascal next year

That makes me a little sad, I'd have to buy a new power supply if I wanted to fit in another GTX970 in my build lol

A little background about me. I am a doctoral candidate and also a fairly serious gamer looking to build a new computer. My research entails CFD analysis on rocket engines, as well as some pretty intensive renderings and 3D models for showing the complex supersonic flows within the engines. I am recently looking to build a new computer to support that, as well as being a pretty cool gaming rig, however my experience with the industry is pretty minimal. I've built several computers for friends but haven't actually done any research on the components. Anyways, here's the data for the build I'd like to do:
What is your budget? $1500-1700
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1080p
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Starcraft II / League / Whatever is new
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? CFD Analysis (ANSYS, FLUENT, OVERFLOW,MatLab),
Do you intend to overclock? I can if its best, but I have little experience overclocking.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? I can if its best.
Do you need an operating system? No.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Yes, but not included in budget.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Would like it to be able to stream fairly effectively.
What country will you be buying your parts in? U.S.
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Prefer Amazon if the price is comparable.
Researching parts is easy, it's not... rocket science B).
Sorry.

Just get a GPU next year that's twice as fast as a 970 if you're into high end stuff

yea I know, that way I also avoid SLI issues and the 4 gb vs 3.5 gb issue as well
Still, a guy can dream
Then again I spend 99% of my time playing dota on a 60 fps 1080p screen lol

get 144hz then

Hey again, following up from my earlier post. Going off the typical proffessional build you guys have posted, and backing it down a little bit more into my price range, this is what I've come up with with some preliminary work.
Processor (CPU): $340 Intel Core i7 4790k Motherboard: $145 Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 Memory (RAM): $160 G.Skill Ares 2x8GB 2400MHz
Primary Storage: $109 Crucial MX100 256GB Secondary Storage: $75 Western Digital Black 1TB Power Supply (PSU): $120 EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 Case: $120 NZXT H440 Heatsink: $70 Noctua NH-U14S
For a graphics card, I was wondering:
How much of a performance hit would I really be taking if I went with something like:
http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Super-Clocked-Graphics/dp/B00NVODXR4/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1429649717&sr=1-1&keywords=gtx 970
Over the one that was proposed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not that I am an expert, but do you really need the 16gb of ram? If not you could put the money towards more storage or a 980 gtx
|
Hrmm, honestly a good question.
I would argue that most CFD codes and modeling programs take up a good bit of RAM, and I really don't need any more storage than that. I don't have 500GB worth of programs that I think need an SSD. I have no idea about the graphics cards, its probably my weakest area of knowledge.
Do you think the savings on RAM are worth me upgrading the graphics card?

For your programs, >8GB of RAM might be very useful. A friend of mine said that many CPU cores was also useful for MatLab, but i don't know anything about the hardware usages of the other unfortunately, so i have no more info than you would have with a 5 second google search for them
It's very bad value on GPU's to go past the 970 or r9 290 (on AMD side) - the 980 costs often 1.65x more for only 1.2x performance gain and for a few reasons, is not worth paying a premium for (based on what it actually is and why the market value is as artificially high as it is right now for that one card)
For a system like that, a 450w PSU would work but good 550w unit would be very comfortable at any overclocks

just got my 970, got a new ssd too, tried to play gta5 now and it always crashed =( might be a 480w psu isnt enough? wow seems to run fine thou ..
|
My new gpu is working (evga 2gb 740 gt sc). It went smoothly. Mirrors Edge auto updated and now has fancy PhysX effects. Also Brood War automatically self adjusts to the correct resolution with black bars so thats great.
The new Hard Drive works aswell (Western Digital Blue 1tb). Ive installed Debian on it. The HD came in a bag without any paperwork, screws or a cable so I had to borrow these things from a friends old pc.
I was worried that these two new parts wouldnt work with my older motherboard (nForce 650i) but it was ok. Im very happy. Thankyou again for the tips guys.

Crashing in what way? Is your new SSD just being used as a storage drive without an OS on it?
Regardless of if it fixes crashes (impossible to say without having any idea why it would crash) it's not a bad idea to download a GPU driver uninstaller tool and then boot into safe mode, run it, unplug internet (to stop auto update) and restart back into regular windows, install the latest driver and then re-plug internet. I do that with every driver release because stuff is just buggy in minor ways if you install over the driver 5 times and/or replace hardware, and it takes 2-3 minutes or so once you know what you're doing
|
nah its a complete fresh install, did replace my other ssd with a crucial 256gb one, every game works good so far, dragon age inquisition crashed one time but its a "common issue" for whatever reason, wow d3 etc work fine, currently reinstalling gta5 cuz there is was a constant, couldnt even finish the prologue -_- but after googling for gta 5 there are more issues with the game than players it seems ~_~
edit*
oh when looking at the event manager i seem to ve some other issues as well with windows update and runtime .NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v4.0.30319_32) - 1>Failed to compile: System.Data.Entity, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089 . Error code = 0x8007000e for example ~_~ got to lock into that one
seriously this is the first time in like ever that i got these issues from the get go, i thought my windows 95 days are over :3

What OS are you running?
either way grab updates for it. Win7 needs service pack 1 to support some performance-enhancing CPU instruction sets, for example
|
win7 its updated with sp1 etc had to do some updates manually (download from microsoft page) now the only update left that has errors while doing windows update is some internet explorer 11 thingy (kb3038314). tried to do it manually but it just shows "did not install" and tahts that -_-

I'm almost about to buy a GTX 970 4GB because i really need a new graphics card. Should i wait a little till it gets lowered in price or hows the forecast looking for the next couple of weeks in terms of price reductions of it, and new cards coming out? Just don't wanna buy it now, and in 2 weeks there's a new better coming out to the same price you know.

Might be minor price reductions but main changes at 980-titanX/competitor performance and pricing

So should i wait or just buy it?
