cool thanks, i think the monitor i wanted to get has a nice review on prad its the Asus MX279H
and they said " That this is indeed a designer piece of a special kind, is confirmed by the 2012 Good Design Award conferred" i had to use google translate cause i think dont there was an english review.
(ur op is amazing btw thank you)
dAPhREAk gives Shock a * | [23:55] <Shock710> that was out of context -_- [16:26] <@motbob> Good question, Shock!

Hey guys 8-9 months ago you guys put together computer for me and it worked great however I had to leave thailand and came back home to Poland so had to sell it I need something similar with few changes, some things changed and I can propably make some improvements or maybe there are cheaper solid alternatives.

This is what I ordered before(9months ago):
-R9 270X GAMING 4G
-Asus H87M-E Socket LGA1150 / H87 / 4 x DDR3 / 6 x SATA 6Gb/s / Micro ATX
-Intel Core i5-4670 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz) Haswell
-Samsung 250GB 2.5" SSD 840 Evo Series
-Western Digital WD Caviar Blue 1TB SATA3 6Gb/s 3.5" 7200RPM 64MB Cache
-LG GH24NS Supermulti 24x DVD-RW SATA Drive (Bulk)
-Thermaltake Smart SE 630W Bronze Power Supply
-G.Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Non-ECC DIMM XMP [SNIPER]
-Corsair Carbide Series Air 200R Compact ATX Case fits ATX

I play games sometimes and plan on playing something cool if it comes out but its not my priority, I play poker online professionally and I work with big postgress databases on multiple tables so I suppose I need good processor and maybe more memory than 8gb?(or it doesnt influence much?) also 250gb ssd was not enough and thus I want 500gb+1TB hdd for media/photos etc
so yea how do I get similar up to date setup as mentioned above at similar cost (some $ in one or the other direction is no problem), thanks again if someone takes some time to help me out

EDIT:
I also have new XFX 550W Pro series Power Supply, Im not sure if thats enough but I heard this one is good so Im wondering if it can power whatever you guys suggest, also I can have X210 Sandisk SSD 512GB for 190$ which is even less than Crucial MX100 you guys are recommending here

AFAIK there really isn't much to change except for whatever is the best price for you now... (you could save money on a cheaper GPU if running the latest games on higher settings isn't a priority)

GPU of 2 years just died (HD 6850)

Planning to get a R9 270X tomorrow, but not sure if my PSU is sufficient. Currently using a CX430W. I used http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine[1] to calculate and it says everything adds up to a minimum of 360W and a recommended wattage of 410W ...but am i gonna be cutting it close? will I encounter any issues later?

here's my build:

CPU: i5-3550
Mobo: ASRock H77M
PSU: CX430 (430Watts)
GPU: HD 6850 -->>> want to switch to R9 270X
HDD: Hitachi deskstar 2tb 7200rpm drive
RAM: corsair vengeance 2x4gb ram
Case: Cooler Master elite 311 (2x120mm fans)
Asus DVD Drive

thanks in advance!

Hi,
I'm building a system that will be running 24/7 and thus I want its power consumption to be small - at least when it's idling. I don't need a complete build, but I would be happy about some help with the cpu.

I don't know, if the TDP gives you anything more than just a hint, maybe, when it comes to idle power. And I'm not even sure, what "idle" means - some processes will be running all the time, just not very demanding ones...

At the moment I'm thinking about the E3-1265L v3, or the E3-1230L v3. But then, if the consumption only really differs under considerable load, I would think about going for a normal cpu, instead of a low power version.
Could someone explain, what I should look for?

No, everything's still about the same, and this is still the stuff to get. There are processors with minor speed bumps like i5-4590 but that's it. Graphics cards should be less expensive, especially $200+ because of the launch of GTX 970 and GTX 980. The power supply is plenty.

GPU may still be under warranty. If it's still covered, even if you get a different one, you may as well get a replacement as a spare or to sell.

Power supply is way more than you need there. There are various things wrong with the calculator, and it's always on the safe side.

Yeah, TDP is not a very good hint about idle power.

The lower-TDP stuff on the same architecture tend not to have lower idle power consumption. They just have lower peak power consumption and often slightly higher energy consumption if you ask it to do a fixed amount of work. (it can be more efficient to use more power at peak but stay at peak for less time so it can idle longer) Besides, let's say you save 10 W on idle, which is very generous and would require more than CPU changes, and idle 24/7. That's 88 kWh a year, or less than $11 on the year at $0.12 kWh / hr rate.

If you're willing to spend extra to lower the power consumption for a reason other than saving money, try getting a board that can undervolt the CPU. However, at idle that wouldn't even save much on power consumption. It may be better to just get a board and especially graphics card that's frugal on idle.

Yea, i didn't really comment because stuff was pretty much the same. The only thing to do is a final build with parts/costs optimized for whatever day/week you're buying.

^For idle power, any Haswell CPU uses extremely little power at idle when configured properly. While listening to music, web browsing etc my CPU is just at 800mhz 0.7v usually, even dropping into c7 (with bursts of ~2500mhz while loading new web pages etc) I think modern GPU's are good with that too - but my last two (770, 970) have both had the same issues which causes them to report ~15w power consumption with my main screen idling at 60hz or 120hz, but ~70w with it at 144hz because clock speeds don't drop below base levels

I was reading up a bit on CPU coolers (because why not, right?) and I stumbled upon Scythe's Kotetsu:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1391-page6.html

Is it just me or is it actually an insane CPU cooler in terms of price / performance ? The other heatsinks it's being compared to aren't exactly recent unfortunately. Still, it's got a really nice price tag.

I don't really like that test, between the small temp gaps (4c between best and worst) and ^that image. It looks like that's how they used thermal paste before putting the cooler on to test

price tag is nice though. It's probably good, but i would have done things differently

SPCR's temp deltas are always (read: consistently) relatively low because they don't overclock nearly as much as most reviewers.

All in all, it's not good to trust one source for those kinds of things because of potential errors, sample-to-sample variation, etc. Maybe the they hit the jackpot on the cooler base and heatspreader shape matching almost perfectly or something like that.

Yeah, I can buy that. I had a hard time believing that a $35 cooler could compete with an Archon from Thermalright for example. Well, I wanted to believe it. :p

Well, after 5 minutes of google, I found another review to try to cross-reference things:

http://www.technic3d.com/review/kuehler/1606-scythe-kotetsu/4.htm

I think that the graph means that an i5 2500k @1.3V running AIDA64 was 37.2°C above ambient with the fan at 1400 rpm (which is full speed, I'm guessing). For comparison, the Thermalright Macho HR-02 with the fan at 1300 rpm (not the Macho Rev.A (bw) btw) had the CPU at 35.4°C.

That's some pretty decent performance considering the price I think.

If anyone is curious btw, my revised OC on MSI Gaming 970

+ Show Spoiler +
i have 1528 core, so not a great sample but not really bad either. Memory seems good though, people seem to be going over 8000 with the samsung memory cards (not sure of other type) and it looks like i can do 8200 24/7 perhaps, it's very good VRAM. I stood and stared at a wall in Heaven and increased clocks until easily visible artifacting happened, and that wasn't until ~8500-8600.

my unigine heaven 4.0 performance from 3 runs on extreme preset (first always stutters a bit.. we need some more good GPU benchmarks!) on extreme preset was 84.1fps, 84.3fps, 84.3fps. I heard this was a pretty bad benchmark for Maxwell, though - it's still good for comparing 970-980 between each other and making sure that performance is as it should be, even if it might be bad for trying to beat a 780/780ti or destroying a 770

Temperature was 63c max with card pushed as hard as i can while having fans at ~1900rpm. There's an annoying minor throttle that might affect all GPU boost 2.0 cards when you hit ~70c, but almost all of the performance is there until you're hitting ~78-79 and reaching that throttle point which should be easily avoidable unless you have bad cooling i think.

max power limit hit was ~105% of 110% - which is not hurting performance, but annoyingly close - fan power takes up like 6% of that budget, and a more power hungry type of load might hit it, or a card with a chip good enough to do 1600@1.25v for example might throttle quite a bit. I saw something about gm204 bios editing earlier, but i will hold the opinion that it's not much of a problem for gamers (annoying for benchmarkers and those that want the best!) as long as you have a 200w, preferably 220w-280w limit (msi gaming 970, gigabyte g1)

It should work without problem. From what I could find, the max. the GPU will use by itself is about 150W and it will use less in games. Your CPU uses a lot less power than that. The rest of the PC can probably be safely ignored as you are pretty far away from the limit of what the PSU can do. I'm guessing something like 250W will be used at most in the worst case, unless you start overclocking the new graphics card (which should still work fine).

+ Show Spoiler +
Note for the future that from what I could find, the CX430 is not really 430W if you only look at what's happening for 12V which is what the CPU and GPU and the drives and fans use. The CX430 can supply 12V * 32A = 384W for that according to the specs I could find (there are different versions of the CX430). In any case, that should still all be plenty for what you want to do right now.

btw I just realized something. R9 270X usually has two 6-pin power connectors, whereas the HD 6850 only had one. You'll need a cable adapter (sometimes or frequently comes with graphics cards) to power the thing.

my 7970 at 1170/1700 did 50.2 fps on the heaven benchmark with 64°C at something like 2000 rpm i think.

so we're looking at 60% more performance.

Hi, I just built a new computer and am having a few issues. I assembled everything and when I plugged in power supply and hit the power button all the fans and lights turned on. Next I tried plugging in a monitor and the monitor just stays black. When I unplug my graphics card however, the monitor springs to life and asks me if I want to boot from a CD. Any ideas on what is causing my computer to not be able to turn on when the GPU is plugges in?
