What's with that +0.3v Ring offset? Is that correct, what settings do you have on bios for uncore/ring? I just ask because that has potential to be dangerous if it's at certain levels, 1.4-1.5 ring is significantly worse than 1.4-1.5vcore. If you're using offset voltage on it, you should probably go back to Manual (which drops at idle anyway)

Must have been something I missed when redoing my OC settings. My BIOS reset itself at some point when I was doing my computer overhaul after I got my GTX970, and it must have slipped through. It was set to auto in the bios and now it's back to 1.15, which is what I had it at prior to my upgrade.

I haven't done anything significant with the computer outside of playing with GPU settings, so it should hopefully be okay.

Hi teamliquid & friends. You guys helped me build a gaming computer about 2 years ago. It still runs GREAT! thank you.

I want to build a SUPER CHEAP computer for my father-in-law who works at a school. He just needs to be able to run the entire Microsoft Office Suite and use the internet.

What is your budget?[/b]
300 or below

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1680x1050

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
None

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Microsoft Office and Internet.

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No, just need dual monitors.

Do you need an operating system?
No

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No, I have the 2 monitors, both at 1680x1050

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No preference, just cheap as possible

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
None, best price is best.

Thank you for the help!

Dell inspirion 660i or w/e it's called is about as inexpensive as you can go without buying used.

The really hard part is whether or not you have a windows license you can already use, cause that's $90 right there. If you saved your OEM disc from your last build, you could use that, I suppose. That's what I do with Win7 pro x64. Too bad they are pre-SP1, so updating sucks.

Otherwise, give or take some $$$ and personal preferences & actual optimization from what I just slapped together, you get an AMD APU or Intel Celeron/Pentium build coming in between 250 and 275 dollars without windows. You may need a DVI -> VGA adapter for one of your monitors. Dunno which is better, I figured an APU was better than a celeron/pentium for the same price.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rdFRqs

Probably could get by with 4gb instead of 8gb ram.

Either way, vastly superior to Dell's 250 dollar offer (but they do have windows included in that)

Single module APUs are pretty trash. A8-5600k is pretty much the cheapest APU worth buying.

Ok good (:

hard to know if the offset is harmful without having a load voltage reading, but i would guess if your uncore was stock or low frequency it probably wouldn't have been

After all the stuff i have seen on OCN i will never trust any kind of auto voltage control for important voltages

Sub $300 office build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vVs9RB

You even get an SSD. Damn that's nice

If you're going to do this, jump on newegg's power supply deal. CX430M is not only perfect for this build, but as of right now it has a promo code and a mail in rebate:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139049&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

at full price this unit isn't so great compared to other offerings, but when on sale it's a really good deal.

(i didn't try to look at dual channel RAM btw, i didn't think it made enough of a difference to warrant not getting the cheapest sticks)

It does for some things. For a simple office build i don't think it would be noticed, but standard practice i think is bad. I might remove one stick and do some latency vs bandwidth RAM benches (mostly for sc2/heroes, WoW, maybe source engine while CPU bound, Wildstar?)

Benchmarking like that is an easy way to spend 6 hours though if you're not careful

What is your budget?

About 800 Dollars. Ideally I would want the cheapest possible PC. But if it would be in my better interest to invest more money into what I need/want to do I would be willing to.

What is your monitor's native resolution?

I am not sure because I will be purchasing a monitor with the PC

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
SC2 on Medium/Low And possibly if I ever fall into a deep depression and alcoholism...League Of Legends

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Streaming and Skype

Do you intend to overclock?
Possibly. I was told that an overclocked i5 could do just well but I wanna get some more opinions

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
Not that I am aware of

Do you need an operating system?
Possibly. If I do it would be Windows 7

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
I will be needing a monitor but it will not be a part of my budget

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I'd prefer an Asus Mobo.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
The Good Ol' US of A

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Pref Amazon because of my amazon prime. But I don't mind newegg since they give you rebates. But anything that gets it here fast and safe.

I have also included a possible build I may use and would like some thoughts on it. I'd also like some advice on on building since I am not so good with tech

Any reason you'd like an ASUS motherboard? They tend to be more expensive compared to comparable gigabyte boards, if you're looking to save money then all the more reason to get a gigabyte Z97 board. If you're going to overclock a Devil's Canyon (i.e. i5 4690k or i7 4790k), you need a Z97 board.

The difference between an i5 and an i7 is that i7 has hyperthreading and the i7 costs ~$100 more. Hyperthreading is basically making a CPU core act like two virtual cores. So a quad-core i7 becomes an octo-core CPU for tasks that are well-threaded. Hyperthreading doesn't help for most games (there are a few exceptions), however it does help with video encoding. So it can help for streaming, you'd get a ~20% (afaik?) faster x264 video encoding, which is what OBS uses. Whether or not that's worth the $100 premium is another question; quite frankly an overclocked i5 4690k or i5 4670k will do just fine at 1080p60.

If you overclock you need an aftermarket cooler and a case that will accomodate that.

Getting AVX2 instructions will also increase your encoding performance. You need either Windows 7 with SP1 or Windows 8.1 to get AVX2. Note that you can a start menu in W8.1 using "Classic Shell". Google it (it's also in OP).

That Corsair CX600 PSU is a mediocre PSU and the system you're describing will run fine with a quality 450W PSU. The Rosewill Capstone will done fine here.

GTX 660s are getting kind of old. I like the GTX 760 for a build such as this one, it'll run all the games you mentioned quite nicely at 1080p. If you want so save money, getting a GTX 750 Ti is also an option. When overclocked, the 750 Ti has performance that approaches that of a GTX 660. The 750 Ti is still less powerful than a GTX 760.

$50 for a Source 210, which is a budget case, is overpriced.

It's actually kind of hard to get a system with an overclocked i5 with a decent motherboard, cooler and case for under $800. You'd have to look at ~$100 Z97 boards, I don't know which ones are good. There are micoATX Z97 boards around that price, the good part is that they'll also fit into an N200, which is a good budget case. However, that case won't accomodate CPU coolers taller than 160mm, so .. things get a bit tricky.

Not to mention you also need to spend $90 on windows.

The only thing I can really recommend at this point is getting this power supply:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Edit: oh wow, if you can get this today (short notice, I know), getting the Fractal Design Core 3500 for only $50 is actually theft. This is not only a great deal, but this case accommodates everything, tall CPU coolers and ATX sized motherboards. it comes with 3 fans if I remember correctly. for $50, I'd get this right now:

http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031504&sku=94347&vpn=FD-CA-CORE-3500-BL&manufacture=Fractal Design&promoid=1053

People in the USA always have these AMAZING deals, lul

Streaming and Skype

What kinda resolution/fps do you want to livestream at, what upload do you have etcetc

even if i thought you would notice 15-20% encoding performance gain with no change to game performance i wouldn't recommend it with only a gtx660. This is why - http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1039?vs=1351 (oc 970 performance is pretty much orange line there)

If you only want to play those games then it's a complete waste of money to get a stronger GPU than a ~750, but it's also probably a complete waste of money to pay for hyperthreading and better cooling to have less average CPU load but the exact same FPS when playing LoL/sc2 and livestreaming

Hey guys 8-9 months ago you guys put together computer for me and it worked great however I had to leave thailand and came back home to Poland so had to sell it I need something similar with few changes, some things changed and I can propably make some improvements or maybe there are cheaper solid alternatives.

This is what I ordered before(9months ago):
-R9 270X GAMING 4G
-Asus H87M-E Socket LGA1150 / H87 / 4 x DDR3 / 6 x SATA 6Gb/s / Micro ATX
-Intel Core i5-4670 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz) Haswell
-Samsung 250GB 2.5" SSD 840 Evo Series
-Western Digital WD Caviar Blue 1TB SATA3 6Gb/s 3.5" 7200RPM 64MB Cache
-LG GH24NS Supermulti 24x DVD-RW SATA Drive (Bulk)
-Thermaltake Smart SE 630W Bronze Power Supply
-G.Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Non-ECC DIMM XMP [SNIPER]
-Corsair Carbide Series Air 200R Compact ATX Case fits ATX

I play games sometimes and plan on playing something cool if it comes out but its not my priority, I play poker online professionally and I work with big postgress databases on multiple tables so I suppose I need good processor and maybe more memory than 8gb?(or it doesnt influence much?) also 250gb ssd was not enough and thus I want 500gb+1TB hdd for media/photos etc
so yea how do I get similar up to date setup as mentioned above at similar cost (some $ in one or the other direction is no problem), thanks again if someone takes some time to help me out

EDIT:
I also have new XFX 550W Pro series Power Supply, Im not sure if thats enough but I heard this one is good so Im wondering if it can power whatever you guys suggest, also I can have X210 Sandisk SSD 512GB for 190$ which is even less than Crucial MX100 you guys are recommending here

There are a few tools, maybe like this: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

but i don't think they are usually strictly necessary to use

I'm not sure how good or bad uninstall utilities are but when I followed this guy's guide when I uninstalled nvidia drivers it worked out super nicely:
