Like really, just installed Skyrim and everything runs SO smoothly at ultra settings. The computer itself runs quite fast, does everything I ask it to just bumbling along. Thank you everyone ^^

So, straight into business. This is the setup I currently have in mind: Processor: AMD FX-8320, 8-Core Black Edition Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB Memory: Kingston 8 GB 1600MHz Motherboard: Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 Harddrive: 1 TB 7200rpm Power: XFX Core Edition Pro 550W, 80+ Case: Zalman Z5 Audio: 8 – channel HD soundcard CD-Drive: 24x Writing CD/DVD±RW The price I am looking at is 773€, or respectively, 1,045$. (No OS included. Got that covered.) What do you think? Power supply ok? Any help and discussion is appriciated, thanks! EDIT: After thorougly reading your first page post a second time, i´ve come to consider Intel processor (i5, as it supposedly is more cost-efficient for gaming than i7). If i want to change my processor to an i5, do I need to replace other parts of my set?

None of my friends/relatives are very good with computers, so thats why I rely on you again, fellow TL´ers. I am looking for advice with the parts. Anything I could and should improve? I can go up in the price for 50-100€, but those pretty much are my limits. Im running a monitor with a native resolution of 1920 X 1080. The computer would be for gaming. I don´t need it for work or using heavy and demanding media software. In fact, I am mainly looking forward into playing BF4 alot, and the game is my main motivation. So, straight into business. If i want to change my processor to an i5, do I need to replace other parts of my set? Intel is idd better for gaming and if you can't make any use of HT (i7), then the i5 is the way to go. So you have to chose another Mainboard. Socket 1150 (Haswell) or Socket 1155 (SB/IB). If you want to overclock, you need a CPU with the "k"-Prefix and an aftermarket cooler. If not, the stock cooler will do.

1. i3-3217U 1.8GHz Ivy Bridge, 4GB DDR3, 500GB hdd , GeForce GT 720M 2GB - price ~490$ or 2. i3-3217U 1.8GHz Ivy Bridge, 4GB, 500GB hdd , HD 4000 - price ~450$ Both are Asus 15.6" X550CC-XX0*** Basicaly it's the same laptop. One with a dedicated gpu the other without. Is there a big difference between the integrated gpu and the 720m? Most of my gaming is done on a desktop that suits my needs. I would mostly use this laptop for studies/internet and some ocassional gaming (like some league of legends maybe). Is the 40$ difference worth it to get the one with a dedicated gpu? Or should i just use those to buy a laptop bag and a cooling stand?

b) no idea, but... some H87 have a BIOS that actually lets you overclock just like with Z87.

Hello, I am going to build a computer for the first time. I am currently using a very old machine and it's time for a big upgrade. My line of work involves web design, film editing for commercials, effects work using After Effects, minor 3-D rendering, as well as lots and lots of photoshop and illustrator work and 2 (one day 3 monitors). Business has picked up dramatically for me lately and I need a new machine that can handle my line of work and be reliable. Also, if it can crush new games, that's a bonus ![]() I live in Canada. My budget is $1500 to $1700. I will need: - CPU - GPU - PSU - Motherboard - HDD - SDD (don't need but would be nice - Case I was given a set of Corsair low-profile RAM (Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 1.50V) a few years back as a gift (didn't work with old motherboard). It's 4 sticks of 4GB for a total of 16 GB. So RAM is not needed (I think )I was considering the following build (which as a newb, I'm sure it full of "wtf?" picks): - CPU - i7 4770K - I figure this version will aid with the video editing and design software. I do plan on overclocking. - GPU - GTX 770 - as above and, of course, games - PSU - Corsair HX 650 or 750 - I have no idea what a good brand is or how much power I'll need - Motherboard - Asus Z87 Pro - This is on sale at Canada Computers for $165 right now. Chosen for number of I/O ports, lots of drive options (but if I understand correctly, adding multiple graphic cards can be problematic in that they may have to turn off some SATA ports - not sure on this). - HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1TB (have other drives already) - SDD - Samsung 840 128GB. - Case - Antec P280. Have the P180. Love it. Quiet, cool, durable as hell (survived baggage from Australia to Hawaii to Vancouver to Toronto - not planning on doing that again) Any input is greatly appreciated. I am very new at this sort of thing and value the input in this thread. Thanks in advance!

The more expensive ASUS Z87 Pro probably offers nothing of value to you as opposed to a ~$115 after mail-in-rebate Gigabyte Z87X-D3H. HX650 is good but unnecessary if you are not planning on adding a second GTX 770. Samsung 840 Pro is sort of unnecessary and ~120GB is really small, especially when it comes to needing the Adobe Suite. I'd suggest getting a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB instead.

I thought Intel locked the multiplier on Haswell? It's not like before where you could increase it by four.

I think actually they locked this down on Haswell. You can overclock with some old h87 bios's though. I don't know detailed specifics, so ask around on overclock.net etc which ones and for details if it still works etc. You need a K CPU though for that. Without specific bios or maybe specific h87 board >AND< K cpu, i'm not sure if you can even change the turbo ratio's any more, because there was talk of it being disabled when we made gen switch to haswell To Mjolnir, i'd be careful buying 770. They're not good value in a lot of places ATM, in the UK for example we had good 7970 models as low as £224 while the good 770's were up at £320 or so - and arguably (depending on how you use the cards etc) 7970 could be considered a superior performance pick while costing 0.7x as much. Also, the 7970's have 3gb of VRAM. If you can get one of those here for £224 on deals - 770's are up at like £310 for 2gb version. £400 for 4gb version. If you wanted more than 2gb of VRAM, you shouldn't buy the 770 (if you wanted, say, 2 gpu crossfire/sli for a 2560x1440 screen in the future with high settings and a bit of aa) but if you're not planning on using more than 2gb of VRAM, then it's still a questionable buy. ^Of course pricing is VERY different across markets, but be aware for value. Nvidia's holding high on their prices. If wherever you are buying from doesn't have the newer cheaper AMD GPU prices, they'll probably have them when the r9 280x rolls out very soon (few weeks?) my quote in the last page or two from overclockers.co.uk is relevant to this

I don't know much about MBs so I will take a look at your suggestion. If the HX650 is overkill, is 550 something to aim for? Thanks for the heads up on the Pro vs. Evo. A bit more digging and I see the difference is negligible. Good call ![]()
