On LGA2011 you want 4 sticks for slightly better performance. On B85 you have dual channel memory and can't overclock the RAM anyway. edit: wait a sec, wasn't everything already answered?

What is your budget? $1000 tax in. What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? CSGO, Dota 2, Diablo 3, Starcraft2, Hearthstone, What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Watching streams/tv shows and other basic stuff Do you intend to overclock? Yes Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No Do you need an operating system? No Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Preference towards a high end cpu (i5-4670k). Some of the games I play are cpu heavy. Would like an SSD. Can't really go back after my experience on my macbook air. What country will you be buying your parts in? Canada If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. I will probably be buying everything through ncix.ca, since they offer match prices and I've had a good experience with them so far. Goofing around I've come up with this (overbudget): http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/3nePb Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks guys. My current build is as follows: E8400 HD 5750 ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 Antec Sonata III Black ATX 4GB ram Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA2 7200RPM 32MB Cache What should I do with it? Should I reuse any pieces / sell it (how much?) / or simply give it away to a friend or family member? (Note that fans make weird noises, not sure what's up, and HDD is really slow nowadays). Thanks again!

i can't brain other stuff atm, maybe in the morning it'll run fine as storage, especially if defragmented etc. HDD's don't really lose performance if they're maintained, AFAIK?

On the technology used for the cheap fans, there's a rubber cover hidden behind the sticker on its back. You can force that rubber stopper out and put a drop of oil into the hole and the noise will often be gone. It won't be like new and the noise will soon come back so you will have to oil it again and again and again. The fans are basically at the end of their life. You can replace case fans very easy, but graphics card fans might be annoying and I don't know how to source replacements for those. The whole Intel stock CPU cooler is something worth $10. The HDD should only get slow in a way that things sometimes hang for a while. That's how it behaves when it is on its last legs and slowly dying. You will be able to research if that's happening for you by looking at what tools like CrystalDiskInfo show for the "SMART" data recorded by the drive. If the slowness does not feel like that, Windows hanging when clicking on things, putting a fresh Windows installation on it might fix it? I think Windows Vista and 7 and 8 take care of defragmentation stuff by themselves. I feel that's a solid build that you linked, but some changes might be good. There was something about that particular board (MSI Z87-G43) having a limit for voltage. That's not something that should be relevant for overclocking with a modest air cooler, but I just find the idea of a limit being needed suspicious. They might have tried to save too much on the parts used for the voltage regulation. I'd look at what the competition sells for that price. Is there some other cooler for similar price? It's not very strong and the $30 don't feel good for it. This one might be good, especially if you take care of using the mail-in-rebate: http://products.ncix.com/detail/zalman-cnps-14x-pure-aluminum-ef-75234.htm You really don't need the 620W of that PSU. I think it will be impossible to use more than 400W even when overclocking CPU and GPU as much as possible. Can you find a better deal on RAM? When hunting for a deal, you should also look in the shop's sections for the faster memory speeds. There are often deals for things like 2133 memory that aren't much more expensive than 1600 speed. Faster memory speed doesn't do very much, but it's still worth it if the price does only increase a little. You can get away with using a slow, large HDD if you want. This is because the SSD will deal with all the things that Windows and programs need, so even a 5400 RPM HDD will be fine and feel surprisingly fast whenever you want something from it like loading a game that's installed on the HDD.

If you guys can give a once over on my current (hopefully final) build, I would be grateful. What is your budget? $1000 What is your monitor's native resolution? 1680 x 1050 (plan to upgrade this in the coming months) What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Recent and upcoming releases on High. Don't need to max out everything. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Traditional internet things. Do you intend to overclock? No. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No. Do you need an operating system? No. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Nope. What country will you be buying your parts in? U.S. If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. (Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-04-06 21:34 EDT-0400) I'm iffy on the PSU. Not sure if I have too much power there or not enough. I'm assuming that I have more than I need and might be better of with something that has a lower wattage but is gold. Definitely want something that is modular though. I'm currently split between cases as well. It seems that the 400 has an extra fan which might make me go for that one over the windowed 300, although I'm not sure how important having that extra fan would be. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139008

Longer warranty and better quality. Extra fan won't be a big deal when you aren't overclocking. 120GB isn't much space these days if you're a recent release type of gamer so you may want to consider a 240-250GB SSD which is about $120-$140.

As for the SSD, It's really only there for the OS. As I understand it, games only get a decrease in load time and not performance, correct? If so, I can deal with the load times on most games and just have a couple on the SSD that I play a lot or have longer loads.

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade? Simply put - better FPS and load times. Current PC is somewhat sluggish. I originally built this pc with the express purpose of playing Skyrim which my previous pc couldn't. Probably because it's a laptop... Anyway I'm finding my myself in a similar situation now. I can play most games just fine but if I try maxing out settings I find my FPS dropping below 30 resulting in choppy game-play. I even experience some choppiness when playing Sim games such as SimCity or Banished. I'm currently looking at upgrading to: -GPU: GTX 750 Ti http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487028 -PSU (only if necessary) -Hard-drive: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250KW SSD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147253 or SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147193 I don't mind spending an extra $45 if there's a noticeable difference in load speeds. Regardless I don't need more than 256GB. Only using 105GB currently on my pc. What is your budget? Absolute max $600 including PSU if needed, otherwise $400. What country will you be buying your parts in? USA If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify. Retailer: Newegg. I could use Amazon however I prefer Newegg for electronics purchases. Brands: I prefer larger/name brands. I'm just generally more at ease of mind with them. I have a quick follow-up question for this post. My windows 7 is OEM, by my understanding that product key can't be transferred to a new MOBO, but I'm simply looking at swapping out my hard-drive and GPU. Will I need a new key or am I fine?
