Thanks for the quick reply!
I just checked, both my DVI-I ports are dual-link (with 24 pins each). Guess then I don't have any problems and can just order the monitors.

DVI-I is not an indication of dual-link. Manufacturers just use dual-link DVI-I to ensure pin compatibility.

Many of the older cards have a 1x dual-link DVI-I and 1x single-link DVI-I.

So glad, since i checked for new computer stuff, all those ads with beautiful russion girls are gone and replaced by hardware retailers. They probably know that i wouldn't be able to sustain a girlfriend/bought wife once i buy a new computer :D

Really???

Will we get Rosewill PSUs? :D ?!

I've always like Newegg for some reason, even though I've never used their services before.

Isn't rosewill just rebranded superflower (which we already have! :D)

Or at least the capstone?

Well, Super Flower and Sirtec already sell under their own brands in Europe. I don't know if they have agreements with their customers about the region that would prevent it from happening. Probably not.

But in general, given newegg.ca prices, I wouldn't get too excited. Once you factor in VAT, I don't see them being cheaper than the bigger UK and German etailers and maybe some others.

edit: Rosewill also uses ATNG for power supplies, which I don't recall seeing under their own brand anywhere... I think. (okay, also Solytech on the really cheapo, bad stuff that is mostly EOL and plain sucks anyway)

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading/buying a new system.

I'm not really looking at specific parts yet, but mainly just wondering if an upgrade would give me a significant increase in performance. Is it worth keeping some of these parts, upgrading only for example the GPU? Are they so outdated that I would be better of just buying a whole new system?

+ Show Spoiler [Extra information] +
What is your current build?
Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80GHz
1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 5850
8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1680x1050 x 2

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
I can't really run modern games at high settings anymore, I'd like to be able to do that again. I would also really like to get an SSD. A specific example of a game I'd be playing would be BF4. I also use my PC to run relatively time consuming Mathematica code every now and then.

What is your budget?
1000-1500 Euros

What country will you be buying your parts in?
The Netherlands

All you need is a GPU upgrade.

Something like a R9 280X or GTX 770 would nearly triple your GPU performance.

Some things maybe held back by CPU, depends on game + target framerates, or other tasks etc. An i5 760 at stock would run great with certain things with a higher end GPU, but not everything

BF4 would be one of those games held back by CPU, I would think.

I wish you guys would tone back the elitism some times. His i5-760 is based on the same Core architecture as your Haswell and yet you act as if it's some mid 90's tech.

An i7-4770k at stock would run great with certain things with a higher end GPU, but not everything

See what I did there? Such blanket statements are bad when the subject matter can be replaced indefinitely. I can put any CPU ever made in place of the one you used and it's still valid.

I probably should have added that he should overclock his CPU though.

We're not comparing orders of magnitude changes here. ~2.93ghz 760 doesn't compete well against a ~3.7ghz 4670k. I have higher standards than some for "great" - i was unable to make bf4 run great with oc'd 4770k so i can see why one might have trouble with a far worse CPU. Mantle helps a lot lot lot there but i still see people complaining of issues and not using it even in the face of 1.5x performance because of them.

It's not exactly a 3x increase of performance cpu to cpu, but there is a very real performance gap from clocking, stock vs stock, ~26% higher with like 30% better IPC that could be relevant to somebody buying into a pretty high end graphics card that does not want to be held back. It's not like there were no advances in CPU performance from midrange 3 and a half years ago

Well, I could be wrong, but 760 sounds older than sandy-bridge. Considering that even a stock Haswell has its limitations these days ("limitations"), I can only imagine what limitations a 760 might have. Then again you're right in that older processors aren't that bad; my old Q6600 is still going strong.

I think it would probably indeed be best to just upgrade the GPU and see how things work out from there. If you want to play BF4, it might not be a bad idea to get an AMD card, which has Mantle which greatly reduces the load on CPU. If you still can't play the game to your satisfaction then maybe consider a CPU upgrade.

It's not terrifyingly bad, i'd just be concerned for some games with it at stock. Buying a big meaty GPU and being brickwalled by a few games still running the same wouldn't be nice for me, so i think it was right to point out ^

I just think that lines like this can be more dangerous than performance elitism~

By the same token that the i5-760 is pretty serviceable still, so is the HD 5850... It's just that there is much more of a gap in GPU performance per time, and the GPU matters more for games. However, the GPU's not going to speed up Mathematica.

Also, the budget can readily support a new GPU, SSD, CPU, and motherboard.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm leaning towards just upgrading everything, seems like it would be a bit wasteful to buy a 300 euro GPU only to have everything bottlenecked by my CPU

Reading back a few pages I saw something about waiting for next generation of nvidia GPU hardware (maxwell?), and I was wondering if you all think it's worth waiting for those (assuming the wait won't be more than 1-2 months).

Hard to say how long it would be, could be way longer.

20nm flagship probably not 1-2 months. We might have one of the other 28nm maxwell dies by then though
