thx Unlikely to be sales on r9's, far more likely to be sales on the non rebrands. Coincidentally the 7870 is priced amazingly right now IMO. $115 power color 7870 $130 msi 7870 Both are ghz edition, and those are AR prices. Tigerdirect is selling a 660 on black Friday for 160 iirc, which doesn't seem as appealing to me. There was a crazy special $170 for a 7950 earlier this month, but that sold out quickly. Although I think it's a reasonable bet to expect to see black friday sales on 7950/7970 if you are wanting more than a 7870 can provide.

Plus that sexy black/gray color finish would look great with my Storm Striker case and black/white phanteks heat sink. Oh and gonna overclock as well. Well if you're buying a $500 motherboard, i hope you have tri or quad gpus, at least a 500gb ssd, etc. because it's one of the least important things in a build, behind even the case/psu (because they can be reused).
If you only have 2 gpus, there's no reason to spend so much.

I will be buying a custom pc from cyberpowerpc (parents think i wont be able to build my own -_-) so i have a couple questions hope you guys can help with in Layman's term please, i am not a tech savvy person... NO OVERCLOCKING
1) anyone know a site that customizes using a fractal design r4?
2) What is the NZXT Internal USB 6-PORT Expansion Module
3) Air Cooling: Thermaltake Frio vs Coolermaster 212 EVO
4) Sound Absorbing Foam on Side, Top And Bottom panels, Power Supply Gasket, Anti-Vibration Fan Mounts are they necessary?
5) What is an SSD card and its benefits?
6) I will not be getting a new HDD because i like mine, is it difficult to put in my HDD to the new PC? or if i do get a new HDD can i transfer memory from my old one into the new one in some way?
Please have nice comments, and Thanks for taking your time to read and answer! GG~

Thinking about upgrading processor + motherboard and associated parts, just checking to make sure everything should work out okay:
What is your current build?
i7 920 @3.5 ghz, 560 ti, gigabyte ud3r motherboard (I think these are all the relevant parts, obviously I would be replacing ram etc. too).
What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080 + 1680x1050
Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
Recently with the release of Mists of Pandaria on WoW I've had issues running WoW and other programs at the same time (computer freezes completely for up to 30 seconds at a time) and it lags in some areas where I haven't had any issues running up to 3-4 copies of WoW at the same time before. I would also like to be able to stream games like LoL without any fps lag, while currently streaming lags my computer a bit.
What is your budget?
Pretty much whatever is required; I don't think it'll take more than $500 unless I also need a new video card or something.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
US, Florida.
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify.
None

Hello everybody. I posted here about tow years ago when I built my PC. Now I'm helping out a friend. He wants to build a computer that runs SolidWorks and allows him to do some gaming. I'm not sure what his graphical needs will be (whether he is doing a ton of 3D stuff) so I'm skipping a GPU for the time being. I have a feeling he will need one in the future but hes on a minimalist budget. He told me he wanted to be somewhere around $600 but would pay up to $800 if absoultely necissary. He will be running on 2 1920x1080 monitors. Can you critique my recommendations. (We live right up the road from a Microcenter btw)
Thanks!
CPU: Intel i5 4670k - $200 Mobo: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 - $90 when bundled with CPU GPU: Skipping for now and using Integrated Graphics. May buy in the future RAM: G.Skill Sniper 2x4GB - $53 Storage: Intel 530 Series 240GB - $150 Case: NZXT Source 210 - $40 PSU: Corsair CX430 - $25 after MIR
Total: $558
When I built my computer after market CPU fans seemed like a pretty popular thing. After reading this thread, it seems like they aren't as popular anymore. Is there a reason for this? Should he install one for this build?
Thanks in advance!

Aftermarket coolers still pretty popular. Especially if you plan on doing any overclocking. One of the most popular budget coolers is the CM hyper 212 evo.

If you mean a CPU cooler, you need one if you want to overclock, even if only a little. It's not optional.
If you mean fans for the case, a lot of cases already come with two fans, which will be enough usually.

I believe the noctua something or other comes highly recommended in oc builds. The build looks relatively fine (an oc'er might be able to give you more insight on the mobo). Since you're buying some stuff from micro enter, double check if they still had a coupon for CPU + Samsung evo purchase... They might still have a $20 off coupon for a 240gb. Other than that the cx430 only has one 6+2 pin, which will limit the gpu that can be used (unless you get a molex adapter). Personally I just bought a cx430 bt I'm looking to replace it considering the deals on 7870's right now. I was looking at the xcx core for $26 ar, but unsurprisingly it sold out a day or two ago.

Eh I can't answer any of those questions however I did a quick search: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Black_Friday_Special_III/
^This is kind of a rip off. Big companies like ibuypower or cyberpowerpc (are they the same? idk) have bad deals. I mean really bad. You're getting a $1400 gaming rig with a $200 GPU, yet a 4770k. That's just not right, the GPU should be beefier and you can use an i5 4570/4670. The PSU is a no name, or you can get a CX series PSU which are budget PSUs that you should only get if they're on sale. You can't choose a cheap motherboard if you don't want to overclock either. Z87 motherboards are a waste of money if you aren't going to SLI/Crossfire or overclock. If you're not going to overclock, you don't need an aftermarket cooler either.
Here's my advice: build it yourself. Building a PC isn't difficult at all, the real hard part is picking the right parts (this thread is here to help for that) and finding good deals. Watch any video in the OP or youtube it, it's seriously just a simple as it's portrayed on screen. Aside from the fact that computers are easy to build, there's also the fact that all the builds on cyperpowerpc are terribly inefficient and overpriced. You're saving 30-40% (pulled these numbers out of my arse but it's roughly that) by doing everything yourself.
An SSD works like an HDD except data transfer is much, much faster. So things like booting your computer, loading programs or loading games will be done much faster than if done with an HDD. It may seem trivial but it's actually pretty big. No one regrets getting an SSD.
You can easily re-use your old HDD if you simply open up your current computer and unplug the HDD. Then you just plug it into your new PC. You'll have to reinstall hardware drivers though, for the graphics card for example.
For the air cooling, as I said before, if you're not overclocking just use the stock cooler that comes with the processor.
Sound dampening, idk. I'll tell you this though, I have a budget case that cost me like €35 and it's not very noisy. Define R4 is a great case though, so totally worth getting if it fits your budget.

timings are different between the two.
also, if you plan on buying either, be weary of voltage.

Just to add on Incognoto's advice, local shops probably can do it for you at a nominal fee if your parents are adamant against you building it yourself. You need to ask around to find such a shop before ordering parts though!

I believe that the typical RAM voltage is 1.5V. You'll have to check the motherboard specs to see if the mobo can support higher voltages.

can you just stick 2 of the same 2x4gb kits together to make a 4x4gb kit?

I don't know the exact details, all I know is 1.5 is increasingly standard.
Though it seems that some OC enthusiasts have no problem pushing 1.65v on their RAM for long periods of time.

1. Some sites will take special orders, mostly the big expensive brands.
2. Its an addon card that adds 6 more USB ports to the back. so in total with the motherboard, you should have 12 or more USB ports.
3. You don't need an aftermarket heatsink if you aren't overclocking. They're not even in the same price category so I'm not sure why you're comparing them.
4. Fractal Design Define R4 comes with sound absorbing material so I don't really understand your question. It's down to you whether you deem sound dampening material necessary or not.
5. If you're talking about a PCIe SSD than they're just like regular SSDs except much more expensive and much faster. If you're just talking about an SSD, just think of them as a larger USB stick or just another HDD but faster.
6. Yes, putting in an HDD is easy.

1.6v+ is the standard voltage for 2133MHz+ memory and is fine.
