Retail Edge is also coming up soon, 4770k will be available for $79 for those that qualify. adding onto the deals comment. microcenter is having amd fx 8320 black edition for 99 USD, for instore pickup (from 11-29 to 12-1) Fry's should pricematch, so if Fry's is closer by, show them the microcenter deal.

What is your budget? 800-900 CAD
What is your monitor's native resolution? Two monitors at 1280x1024
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Starcraft 2 - High StarCitizen - Medium? Path of Exile - High
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Basic use (firefox, word processing)
Do you intend to overclock? No
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Yes, later
Do you need an operating system? No
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Graphics card should be an NVidia 760, as per the note at the bottom.
What country will you be buying your parts in? Canada
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. No preferences
Vearo's Notes My friend really wants multi-monitor support. While the 760 is overkill, he plans on buying my 760 when I upgrade, and will use 3-4 monitors after that upgrade. I'll refer him to this thread if you have any arguments against using a 760 for his resolution(s). It is likely that the two additional monitors will be around 1280x1024. If he's able, he'll upgrade to 1920x1080 once he gets the second card. + Show Spoiler [Build] +I'm quite sure that it could be better. I don't think I have any SATA cables for the hard drive, so should that be swapped for a non-OEM one? Is it wise to wait until Black Friday for deals? SATA cables are provided with the motherboard (unless you purchase refurbished, open-box, or something that's not brand new). Didn't we already go through this that you don't need SLI for multiple displays? Z87-G55 is overkill if you're not going to overclock. If you just want SLI support, just grab the cheapest Z87.
Ok, thanks for the additional info.
In regards to SLI, my friend wants 3 monitor support now, and 6 down the line. While I know that a 760 can support 3+1 monitors, to my knowledge a single card system can't support six unless the motherboard can supply the additional displays. If the motherboard can, I'll tell him and 'downgrade' the build around a single card.
Sorry for not numbering the amount of monitors he's planning on using before, he was somewhat vague with his answers to me.

GTX 760 supports up to four displays as Nvidia doesn't support daisy chaining afaik. The motherboard can drive up to three displays in most cases and a cheap (~$40) card can drive two additional displays.
|
At the very least, if he wants 6 monitors 'down the line' then doesn't it make sense to wait to buy another card until he needs it? If its just 3 now, then get the one card, and in say 6 months when he wants more monitors he can get another card (which will be cheaper than if it was purchased now)

So would just enabling the IGPU in the mobo/bios enable the motherboard to display in conjunction with the dedicated card? If so, then all he needs is a good single-card build. That would also mean that he doesn't need the 760 specifically and can go with anything appropriate.
Thanks for your continued help!

The original plan was that he'd buy my 760 once I was ready to upgrade.

Is it possible to use a GPU and motherboard's integrated graphics at the same time? I have a second crappy old VGA monitor I'd like to use but my 7970 has only a single analogic outlet so I can only use one VGA monitor at a time. When I tried to use motherboard's outlet for second monitor it didn't work. :p

The modern Intel chipsets (Z87, H87, B85, H81, Z77, H77, Z68, H67, etc) support simultaneous use. On older chipsets, the IGP is automatically disabled when a dGPU is detected because from my understanding, it shares the same PCIe lanes as the first PCIe slot.

Thank you for that information!
With that information, I have reduced the cost of my friends build:

why are you buying from newegg?
|
Damn, I was going to try to get into the Retail Edge deal through a friend, but $36 shipping to Canada kinda sucks. And most people will only be able to get it for $115, totalling $150 net + paying a friend for help = $200, at which point, it's not that much cheaper than the sale.
What stops people from buying like 10 of them at $115 and selling them for $200+? I couldn't find anything restricting use of the chips to personal use when I skimmed through the details.

It's one per person. Even if it wasn't, you'd probably get fired for doing that.

Ah well that makes sense.
Are there any planned sales for R9 270/280's?

Can someone recommend me a good GPU and a monitor? im still having a hard time. (for a keyboard i think im going to go with some Das Model keyboard (cherry blue switches of a Das keyboard, according to the mech keyboard guide on TL, this is the best blue swtich keyboard???)
build is i5 4670 H81m P33 mobo rosewill capstone 550w-m WD blue 1TB 2x4 Gskill Ripjaws x series F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM ram
cant decide on a GPU, looking for med - high quality on any games i play (steam games, COD, LoL, upcoming game watchdogs, etc etc etc) and less than $200 (willing to go up to $250 if its worth it)
i was thinking on like a gtx 660 or ti version of it. or a radeon 7870 or r9 270x.
and for a montior, whats the "go to" 1080p IPS ~~ $150 monitor people uses??
thx

Zero chance for R9 270 since they're still in very short stock and R9 280x, not likely.

thx There's some cheap monitor sales on newegg right now (preBF sales). I'd also keep an eye open on their shellshockers - never know if they'll have another GPU on sale.

There's a monitor thread where you might find a go to IPS at 1080, I think it's an ASUS something, $150 sounds about right.
7870/270 sounds, good, iirc don't go with 270X as it's basically a 270 at a higher clock rate. Just get an R9 270 and set the clock rate yourself. At $250 you might find a 7950 which is a notch higher than these cards. Look for some benchmarks (lots of those hanging around) of the games you want to play and decide for yourself if you're willing to dish out $50 for a better card. You could also get a GTX 760, I wouldn't get a 660 simply because it's a generation old. Being of an older generation generally doesn't mean better pricing either (it does but not enough to be worth it, at least imo, perhaps someone won't agree to that).
GPU is always hard to recommend because it's almost entirely dependant on how much you're willing to spend. There's a list with tiers in the OP that's good.

Anyone know when online retailers will receive new shipments of the "Asus Rampage IV Black edition x79 Motherboard". Can't find a single online retailer that has them in stock.

To go with my 4820k CPU. Plus that sexy black/gray color finish would look great with my Storm Striker case and black/white phanteks heat sink.
Oh and gonna overclock as well.
