[Q] What sort of ping ratings are needed to play?

I am fairly new to online gaming and was just wondering what kind of ping score/rating is needed to play online in SC2?

I will be moving to NA soon but want to continue to play on the EU server. Through testing my ping from where I am now to the Brooklyn, NY server the ping rating was 97ms with 3ms jitter. Is this score/rating too high to play with?

I realise the ping rating will probably change from there to here but I see it as a decent guideline.

(note: I play at a low level so tiny levels of lag probably wont be game breaking but if the game will be unplayable, please let me know)

Thanks!

In the end it's all up to the person playing, but I would say no problem.
People play cross region everyday, so you won't be the only one - it's definitely possible. Though you should expect a different 'feel', most I know got used to it. 100 ms is not bad, people often play with worse - personally I'm at 200+ (SEA region to EU server).

As you said, you won't know the real delay until you are there, but to get a feel for it, maybe you can borrow someone's NA account and try a few games. That should give you a feeling for it.

I am from south america and my normal ping (in NA east coast servers) are like 100-200ms which sometimes is not that bad on FPS games, i dont know how much ping i have in SC2 tho.

Depends on the person, if you are not particularly fast or sensitive to it you probably wont even notice it, but then again i used to keep a folder of fraps recordings were rounds were decided in an FPS i used to play by 35-50ms ping eating a shot that i fired just before i died (120fps record) and above 100ms im pretty sure anyone can start to feel it pretty badly if you are trying to blink micro or split or do certain sequences quickly

I will see if I can find someone who will let me use their NA account, though I will need to be the same skill level so could be a challenge! haha.

As for the speed thing, I really don't play that quickly. I am bronze (though I think I am on the verge of promotion, then I guess all bronze players think that ) and normally finish with about 40-50 APM average. I play Terran but my splitting is poor at best even playing in region so the fine micro aspects shouldn't be an issue. Thanks!

100ms is playable, around 200ms is kinda unplayable.
btw Maggost, you can see your latency, start > cmd > tracert us.battle.net, last hop before "request timed out" is your ping, mine is 227ms.

sc2 has built in latency, so anything below 200 will feel normal. if I'm at 250 it feels laggy, if i'm at 190 it feels great when I play on the korean server.

Obviously lower ping is better but it doesn't truly start effecting you until like 350 or so ping. A human can only respond to unexpected stimulus at around 250-300ms so if your ping is below that its a non issue. Expected stimulus as in waiting for a timer to run out is much faster. around 100 ms or so. in gaming most things that happen that require you to act are unexpected so there ya have it.

When I play I notice the lag and I play to adjust for it. It's not that bad though or maybe I am just too used it. My ping is awful beyond belief, here is proof

I play with 120 ping on NA server in high diamond/low masters no issues. Honestly lag won't cause you to go down much if any at all. Lag really plays the biggest role in tournaments when you need 100% but for ladder its like whatever in all honesty.

The only time I can't play online is when someone/something is using the bandwitdth or when I have to patch

Thats a joke, really.

Completely unexpected stimulus, maybe, but in reaction time tests, ~150-200ms is much more common, and that is the same enviroment you will be in when you are trying to forcefield a bunch of roaches against your third and they are bouncing back and forth without committing, and comparing ping against reaction time is stupid. Ping is added to reaction time, NOT compared with it.

If you are playing a FPS, or have a ghost and a high templar enter range of each other before either player see's them, for example, and both players have the same reaction time, then having 200ms higher ping will delay your shot/feedback/EMP by 0.2 seconds, and the player with the 200ms higher ping will lose EVERY time, unless he clicks 0.2 seconds or more earlier than the other player, which is a massive barrier to overcome.

Delays in control hurt you in many other ways, and will ultimately mess up pretty much everything in some way, but the vast majority of players wont be high level enough for it to ~REALLY matter, when you consider 98% of active players are below masters (and many would argue and i agree that being "good" at the game does not really come until much higher ranking), and the skill cap is high enough to overcome delays, but in a GSL finals-like enviroment if one player was subjected to a 200ms delay on everything he did, it would be a very extreme handicap and almost impossible to overcome

I get about 250 to SEA and 150 - 200 to NA and about 370 - 400 to Kr

SEA and NA are bearable. I can't really play on KR at all

300ms is about the threshold for being playable imo

Seeing this thread prompted me to test my uni internet (never done it before), the result surprised me.

0 ms? Wtf (and it didn't timeout either, it did it pretty much instantaneously)?

^ wow that is crazy! Don't think I have ever even seen that before! I tested mine at home and it was like 27ms, but I don't have a clue what it will be when I move to the NA uni...can only dream it is as good as this! haha

@Rollin

You got 0ms because the speedtest is locating the closest server to you, so it only measures ONE HOP. The battle.net servers will be multiple hops away so the ping will increase for each hop.

I know that, but at least from my house, it's generally around about 30ms to the Perth server, and I've never seen 0ms before, ever. I'm pretty sure my SEA battlenet ping is about 100-150 from memory, and my US batllenet ping is ~200-250 :/
