I suppose how they do it is less important than the effect it has, which is a very good one and an improvement that is immediately and easily noticeable.

Yea, but the improvement is just as noticeable on all of the other monitors that do exactly the same thing with strobe backlight (probably even BETTER with customizable strobe timing and length on benq z-series v2).. Unless they're doing something differently? That is the question.

This mentions that one improvement would be that it can easily be turned on or off during gameplay by a simple OSD option, and also that this can be used on non-nvidia cards(I guess lightboost is nvidia only?).
"This feature is designed to reduce the perceived motion blur much like the LightBoost system does. Since it is natively supported by the screen and easily turned on and off at a screen level from the OSD, there is no need for "hacking" your graphics card settings of trying to enable backlight strobing like on LightBoost monitors. It also means the feature can be used with non-NVIDIA graphics cards which is useful. Turbo 240 involves doubling the frames of the input signal (replicating each frame) and then blinking the backlight off and on in sync with these new frames like an impulse-type display. This should help reduce perceived motion blur much like the LightBoost backlight strobing does on TN Film screens.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/eizo_fg2421.htm

Also it's from what I gather the only monitor with a more desireable panel than TN which has support for this tech.

You can turn strobing on/off with a single hotkey and it's not nvidia specific (lightboost hack might not work well on radeon, i'm not sure - but benq blur reduction is neutral AFAIK)

Also, desirable is subjective. TN is faster.

So that reviewer is wrong then. Reason I picked it was that I couldn't go from IPS to TN but I still wanted 120hz, 240 i didnt research much it was just a nice bonus. I'd say both my old Dell IPS and new Eizo is fast enough with low input lag.

Response times and input lag are not the same thing, AFAIK for response times IPS < VA < TN but i didn't look into it a ton. Picture wise, a lot of people don't like TN

for input lag, any screen even at 120hz is still a big amount of input lag, as in a large percentage of total input lag so it's quite important. If you don't really care about it, it doesn't matter so much

Hey, got my XL2411Z from Amazon.fr, and the v2 firmware was already installed! Super happy, the picture in FPS is sick as hell. Definitely recommend buying a Z serie benq to any FPS player. The colors are really weird compared to my old crappy monitor though, very sharp contrast between everything. Are there color profiles to install or something for the BenQ monitors like there is for the Asus? :o

Oops didn't see this. I think you can just google monitor calibration, there should be at least a few easy presets and icc profiles to get you most of the way there even with no knowledge or tools. Make sure you get used to having the monitor at lower brightness settings if possible, because 100% is extremely bright (~420cd/m2) so a more normal setting would be around 1/3'rd brightness

At the moment I'm playing with 2ms motion blur thing and 100 brightness, the 1ms setting really makes the screen extremely dark. I got used to the colors though, it was just a really sharp contrast with my old one I'll check the icc profiles anyway, thanks!

2ms persistence on 144hz is only ~28.8% of the max brightness. I've seen a few people take these out of box and set them to 100% brightness and actually adjust to that, which is pretty crazy. The max brightness is ridiculously high so that they can run with the backlight off most of the time and still be at a great brightness level

There are some tweaks you can do with a custom resolution at 120hz that removes some visual issues relating to strobing (blur reduction) but i'm not sure on the details of that, other than it doesn't work @144hz. The other monitors (lightboost hack) can't strobe at over 120 anyway, and i'm not sure if gsync/ULMB can or not, but 120 is pretty close to 144 so it's usually ok to use

If I turn blur reduction off the damn monitor is brighter than my room's main lightbulb, people must literally get their eyes burnt if they play like that haha
And yeah I read about the custom res thing, but I can't notice the visual artifacts when playing with my current settings anyway so I didn't bother trying it.

You should probably turn blur reduction off (and use like 30% brightness) when not playing, but if you don't have eye strain/headaches etc already then i guess it doesn't bother you. I can't really read small text with it on for a while without those issues, but that's maybe because i am shortsighted

The quick profile switch thing isn't featured on this model, so it's kind of a hassle to change settings every time (the built in profiles seem to screw up, I tried settings them up but some settings don't save for some reason, maybe I screwed up). I don't have eye fatigue issues at all though, be it from reading or playing, so I don't mind. The quick switch box (don't remember how they call it) would definitely be good to have to have a movie profile easily available, but the 100 extra bucks for that and a different monitor support seemed a bit excessive to me..

aha i just switch over in a few clicks or a hotkey using software, but that's with lightboost hack to make one resolution always strobed and another never strobed (1080p144 normal, 1080p120 strobed)

Couldn't you use f.lux to reduce eye-strain on monitors which are too bright?

f.lux changes the colors you see. I personally like it a lot and use it on my monitors, but don't expect to have the same gamut with f.lux
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.

The issue is not because of the sustained brightness/color temp, it's because of a flashing 420cd/m2 light a few feet from your face while straining a little to read small text

If you wanted to reduce instantaneous brightness with a PWM-backlight-control monitor or one doing intentional backlight strobing for blur reduction, you could turn down the contrast setting. But that, you know, reduces the contrast. (so does f.lux, except that's mainly about reducing color temperature)

It's an issue of hardware and implementation, really.
