Anyone in here has experience with the Dell P2414H overclocked to ~75Hz because i'm thinking about ordering one from Amazon to test it myself (if i'm happy with it i gonna keep it, else i gonna wait till G-Sync).

It is a 27" LG Flatron. The problem with it is that whenever I have the backlight on it gets a very strong electrical smell, but only with the backlight on. At one point the screen went completely blank (but audio still worked) until I let it cool down. Not using the backlight it works fine, it is just dim and the color doesnt look as good.

I found a guy on craigslist that will fix it for $59 + parts but I don't know how much I should trust somebody from craigslist.

If it's just like dying capacitors that need to be replaced (is common and fits the symptoms), pretty much anybody should be able to do the job.

After the lovely experience in the Computer Built/Upgrade thread, I figured I'd check here while I'm cogitating on monitors.

I currently have two LG Flatron 23" monitors (nonVESA mount capable) that I picked up at Sam's Club (WalMart "warehouse" store) for about $115 each about two years ago. (This is it.)

I can get a Dell U2412M for ~$275 each via an employee discount program. Is it worth it, beyond the VESA mounts, to upgrade? (My usage is about normal - nothing crazy, SC2, KSP, some other games, browsing, video, etc.) (Alternately, there's a "bundle" with two U2412Ms, a two monitor Dell stand, for $827.) Should I hold out to see if anything new or better is coming down the pipeline (next 3-6 months)?

Many thanks.

You bring up the VESA mounts, but most people don't have a need for a replacement on Dell U and P series. I mean, you already have height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustments with the stand they come with.

For whatever it's worth, U2412M is already not the current generation in terms of Dell product lines as well as the panel tech (e-IPS as opposed to the newer and supposedly slightly better AH-IPS). But if it's 1920x1200 you want, most are going away from that and there's nothing of that resolution that replaces the U2412M and its feature set. Also, $275 for a U2412M isn't particularly a special price. I'm pretty sure they've been under that before after coupon on a sale. The bundle sounds like a huge ripoff.

If it's really the VESA mounts or if height and good stand adjustments don't matter to you, there's the newer Asus VS24AH-P at 1920x1200 for around $230 on typical price. Now here the stand actually sucks so a VESA mount would make sense (clamp style available at say $40ish):
http://www.rakuten.com/prod/asus-vs24ah-p-24-1-led-lcd-monitor-16-10-5-ms-adjustable-display-angle/249706168.html?listingId=-1

If 1920x1080 is okay, there are cheaper options and more of them. I wouldn't expect much that new and exciting in 3-6 months in terms of image quality and at this resolution. There may be more high-res monitors and monitors with G-Sync (look it up... it's for smoother motion for gaming and only for GTX 6xx series and later Nvidia cards).

The VESA mounts are a sore point for me - didn't realize the LG monitors didn't have them until I thought "Hey, a dual monitor mount would be great..." It's something I'm looking for in any monitor I buy in the future.

I had my questions about the bundle - the "savings" don't add up when the different parts are taken seperately versus the bundle.

I have read throughout the thread that the Dell monitors were pretty good, but was unsure about possible upcoming products. The power features looked interesting too, but I mostly want to make sure that if I replace these two monitors, it won't be something that gets blown away any time soon. The Asus monitor looks pretty good, so I might have to poke around for it.

I'm not wedded to the 16:10 format, but I do think the extra pixels are worthwhile. (I'm kindof sad that the HD standardization seems to have stopped further work on monitors that had higher resolutions - I remember old CRTs in my college labs could usually hit the 2k range but that seems to have become much rarer these days.) G-Sync won't do much for me with my Radeon. Thanks for the info and good suggestions!

Right, so I suppose I have a question. I bought the http://www.iiyama.com/gb_en/products/prolite-e2473hds-1/ a few years ago but I only looked at responsetime. right now i'm in the market for possibly a second 23/24' screen, but not really sure what to go for and if I should just get a second one of these. I currently have an old Samsung 4:3 monitor that serves as a web-browse/skype as well as my main monitor so I don't do multi-monitor gaming, although I might want to do that. Would I need 2 of the same screens? I understand resolution, obviously, but brand and model aswell? And should I get a better monitor to be my ''main'' one? My budget would lie around ~€150,-, and can go slightly above that. Requirements are simply 1920x1080 and 60+hz, although I'm most likely not going to get more than 60 for that price

Hi everyone!

I would like to buy a new monitor. I have ~180 USD for that. My laptop monitor is too small, so I want a little bigger.
Spec:
- 21,5-22"
- mostly for movies and games (sc2, gw2)
- VGA and/or HDMI port
- 16 : 9, res:1920*1080
My friend recommended me the Samsung S22B350T, but it's not available any more in my country. I want something similar.
I've been eyeing with Benq GW2265HM, but i'm not sure of it. Can you give me a few tips?
Beside that, I'm thinking about a cheap IPS monitors like Dell U2312H, but don't know if it worst the plus money.
(Sorry for my bad english)

I took it in to a shop and they said it was the capacitors (about a dozen of them), but they turned to white powder when they took them off and were unable to identify which capacitors they would use to replace them so they claimed it dead.

Hello guys !

I need some advice on my next monitor purchase.

Basically i'm looking for a monitor to make a double screen. Thing is I know nothing about monitors.

I've got a budget around 250€, and it's mostly for watching movies, gaming (a lot of single player and the usual sc2/lol/tf2 and some mmos).

Someone suggest me the BenQ 24" LED - XL2411T, but since I dont have a nvidia graphic card it seems overkill for me because of the NVIDIA 3D Vision 2.

Any thoughts on which monitor could fulfill my needs ?

-Sorry for the average english, same as ever-

xl2411t is a 120hz tn (144? you can't strobe 144 commonly); it makes most sense to get a monitor like that for motion quality, input latency and strobing. If you have not read a ton from www.blurbusters.com etc then it's probably not a great idea to make a purchase in that area

Thanks for the response Cyro, like i said i don't know much about monitors, even less about 120hz TN except for the fact that they seems pretty good for nervous fps and such.

You have any idea of some monitors that i should look into in the same range of price ? Or else i could take some time to read about 120hz monitor but then i'm not sure my CG could really make the best of it.

Hey,

So, I just built a computer using the Typical Professional build, but I have a couple of questions. I'd like to point out that I'm ordering everything from an excellent French website, as I'll be ordering from France. They put everything together for you and so on, so it's important that I order everything from them, since I'm not quite sure I could build it myself.

Basically, I am missing two parts, but I found very, very close replacements to them.

I am missing the RAM: G.Skill Ares 2x8GB 2400MHz, which I replaced with this (Corsair Vengeance Pro Gold DDR3 PC19200 CAS 11)

Also, I couldn't find the exact same graphics card, and I got this one instead (EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked ACX Cooler 3GB). It seems to be the exact same thing, except no Ti?

Do those differences matter at all, or will the setup be largely the same?

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys!

I've got a question.

I just put together a computer using the Typical Professional build from the Computer Build thread, and I have a question regarding monitors.

Just to save you some time, I'll paste the setup from the other thread:

+ Show Spoiler +
Processor (CPU)[image loading] $305 [image loading] Intel Core i7 4770k
Motherboard[image loading] $145 [image loading] Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
Memory (RAM)[image loading] $149 [image loading] G.Skill Ares 2x8GB 2400MHz
Video Card (GPU)[image loading] $730 [image loading] EVGA GTX 780 Ti 3GB Superclocked ACX
Primary Storage[image loading] $300 [image loading] Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
Secondary Storage[image loading] $100 [image loading] Western Digital Black 1TB
Power Supply (PSU)[image loading] $170 [image loading] Corsair AX760
Case[image loading] $120 [image loading] NZXT H440
Heatsink[image loading] $73[image loading] Noctua NH-U14S

Basically, I have a monitor from my old desktop back in France, and I'd like to use it again in duo with a new monitor I would order. The old monitor model is this one. Would it work fine wit h the computer setup?

Also, as I said, I'd like to get a second monitor. I was thinking about that one. Same question, would it work fine?

Thanks in advance!

Yes and yes. The second monitor is fine as a hand me down but pretty crap in comparison to your new computer if you plan on purchasing it brand new. IPS or 120Hz displays would better compliment the new computer.

Argh..

Thanks for the answer.

I do want to get a better screen, but I'm sort of scared of IPS and stuff. I'm not quite sure I'd like the matte/gloss thing, and the light bleed worries me. I've also been reading reviews here and there and the issue of shaky/wobbly stands seem to come up a lot, at least for the ASUS VS229H-P and the other ASUS monitors in the same area.

Is it really a huge improvement? If not for this thread, I would have gone for a non-IPS screen or 60hz (probably what would be considered a low grade screen), but now I'm actually torn. Assuming I get a fairly good IPS/120Hz screen, would there be any conflict in keeping the old one to dual screen?

Yes, IPS and 120Hz are huge huge improvements over 60Hz TN. There won't be any conflict with your older screen unless you have OCD of course.

VS229H-P is low end and like any low end monitor, the stand is usually shit.

RAM similar-ish, it might have bigger heatspreaders which you don't really want often as they can get in the way of some things (some cpu coolers etc) and serve no useful function

780ti is faster than 780, it has 25% more shaders/tmu's and about 10% higher memory bandwidth (so it's up to like ~25% faster depending on the workload if you match clocks, but probably more like 15)

Hmm.. I see. Thanks for your answer.

The website I'm using actually just added the G.Skill Extreme Ares 2x8GB, so I put them back in the mix.

Regarding the GC, I'm considering the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti OC Windforce 3 - 3GB instead. From what I read, it's quite the beast, right?

Regarding monitors... What's everyone's opinion on Iiyama ProLite? This one for instance. I think I am going to go for an IPS or 120MHz, most likely a midrange one.
