Can anyone help me decide between the ASUS VS247H-P, ASUS VS248H-P and ASUS VS239H-P? I'll be primarily using this monitor for gaming (CS and Dota2) as well as lots of reading of pdfs, typing of docs, and possibly coding.

Any other recommendations (<$250 with HDMI) are also welcome. Thanks!

Hi guys!

I am planning to buy a monitor to my notebook.
I have a Radeon 5470 videocard and a 15,6" , 1366x768 notebook monitor. The main reason I am planning to buy a monitor because in the future I have to do a lot of 3D modelling (SolidWorks) and it is very inconvinient to work with a such small screen. Other than that I play many Sc2 and Dota2 occasionally. Sometimes other games which my notebook can run. Sc2 has a consistent 70 FPS with the notebook monitor and other games do fairly well also, somewhere between 30-40 FPS.
I am thinking about buying a low-budget 21,5", 1920x1080 resolution monitor.
My main question is how much the increased resolution will affect the FPS in games. Will I still be able to play at least Sc2 with a consistent FPS and enjoy it without noticable lags.
I found the BenQ GW2250HM monitor which seems just right for me but I would like to get to know other monitors with same parameters and around the same price range around $150.
Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: because my notebook has a HDMI connection so it is preferred for the monitor to have a HDMI connector too.

First two should be decent TN monitors but nothing special. I can't even figure out what the difference is between the two other than 23.6" vs 24". I would not pick either of them over the VS239H-P (or the smaller VS229H-P, don't ignore it; same resolution, higher contrast, just slightly smaller size).

Less than 250, you could pick up a Dell U2212HM (better than U2312HM to be honest), Asus VG23AH, BenQ GW2450HM... these are basically just options from the OP that fit your budget.

I wouldn't personally pick the U22 or VS229/239 because I dislike the Anti-Glare when reading text but that's up to you. The VG23AH or BenQ or some other IPS model with lighter anti-glare is better IMO but YMMV

1920x1080 is almost exactly double the pixels of 1366x768 (~2MP vs ~1MP) so you can expect all your frame rates to be cut into exactly half if using the same settings. Unfortunately for you, Mobile HD 5470 is pretty weak (about the same level as HD 3000 in Sandy Bridge chips). You could play at a lower non-native resolution, but the scaling might look bad. SC2 (probably Dota2 also) will still be playable @ 2MP with low settings, though. However, the monitor itself will probably be a huge improvement in picture quality compared to your laptop, so playing on low on the external monitor might actually be preferable to medium settings on the laptop.

As far as choices go: not so sure how good the GW2250HM is. It should theoretically be decent but BenQ is known to deliver atrocious factory calibrations so I'm wary of recommending it without seeing a proper review.

VS229H-P is good (very matte IPS), or maybe that new Acer H226HQL (glossy IPS).
The answers to most of your Tech Support questions are in the OP. That's why you're not getting a reply. It's been answered before. Read the OP.

So im kinda ebarassed to even be asking this but being on a small budged reading the last 10 or so pages and the OP the Asus VS229HVS229H jumped out to me.
Being almost the same price Im asking myself: Why not go for its bigger brother the VS239H. Is it really the same monitor just a little bit bigger?

You guys are awesome btw.. =)

So what is the "advantage" of having the same resolution with a smaller screen? (Im a monitor noob..)

Depends on what you want, what you're playing, what you notice.

The H236HLbid should have the best uniformity of colors between top and bottom of the screen especially, when viewing from any position (especially relatively close), possibly the best out-of-box colors overall? I don't know much about Acer's IPS offerings. The GW2450 should have by far the best contrast so deepest blacks, but this model I think doesn't even have adjustable overdrive, so I think the setting (that can't be changed) could be on the one that produces excessive ghosting if they're claiming 4 ms GTG. The VH238H should have the best pixel responsiveness easily, so the least motion blurring.

In EU you guys don't get VS239H-P and VS229H-P, as far as I know. The VS239H and VS229H differ in not having the Asus "Trace Free" setting, unlike the -P models, so they have really slow pixel response times, so motion blurring. prad.de has reviews on them.

Same resolution with smaller screen means higher pixel density, which means smaller pixels. If you're sitting close enough to kind of see individual pixels, it could look crisper. Also, at a given viewing distance, you can see more pixels (thus more information) in your field of view and also in your main focus. However, larger sizes may be considered easier to read and also more immersive.

That said, when looking at two particular monitors, there are further differences in addition to the generalities above. I think the monitors with LG-sourced eIPS panels at 21.5" and 23.6" share some similarities; a pattern has emerged. It seems like the 21.5" models usually have a little bit better contrast and maybe a little bit better motion performance as well. It's not a big deal anyhow, and many or most people would prefer the larger option.

Oh yeah, the prad.de reviews I was looking at did indeed look at the non -P versions and still gave both of them a "good" rating. So it seems its not too much of a deal. Would you still recommend those monitors even without "Trace Free" setting? To me it looks like there are no comparable monitors in that price range for casual gaming and studying (text writing and reading).

Thanks for the lightning quick response :D

€: Seems like the 23 has slightly more motion blur than the 22 according to prad.

No, there are lots of alternatives from other companies. Well, it has a VESA mount, if you insist on that, and some others don't. The stand it comes with sucks though. I think I'd rather look at the actual data than the ratings, but for "hardcorespieler" the VS229H got +/- and the VS239H got --. Ouch. Actually, I think the _HR model is available, which may or may not have some certain different overdrive setting than the _H version.

Some might even say that the antiglare on those (and most of the IPS options that aren't the glossy models) is so strong that they're not so good for text writing, as the whites can be noticeably rainbow'd out, blurry.

Maybe LG IPS235P (not IPS235V):

For reasons that I cannot comprehend (possibly just to confuse customers even more by having more meaningless model names), in Europe, Asus has the VS229HR and VS239HR instead of the -P models. I checked their product pages and they don't mention "Trace Free" but they do list a response time of "5ms" which indicates they have overdrive, except it's probably not adjustable [or maybe it is, I don't recall going through the PDF manual]. If it's not, most likely they set it to the equivalent of TF 40 or 60 so it should be perfectly fine.

EDIT: It seems you noticed it too, somehow missed that in your other post. whoops

I recall Womwomwom lamenting about this same thing, how Asus apparently didn't offer the overdrive-enabled VS IPS monitors on the Euro market. Said something along the lines of "Why? Asus doesn't like money, I guess" - gets a chuckle out of me every time.

Really confused about the refresh rate (120hz vs 60hz) and the input lag (ms).

Is the HP 23xi IPS monitor okay for gaming? I know it is only 60hz but it seems all IPS are lower hz?

Thanks in advance!!

As far as I know the refresh rate tells you how often the screen can picture a new picture. For the tec unsavy ppl: 60hz can show up to 60 frames per second (fps), 120hz up to 120fps.
Input lag is the time in milliseconds it takes from your input to be shown on the screen.

In the OP at the top is a great explanation about that.
And yes most IPS monitors are only 60hz. From what I understand though, as long as you are not a Pro Quake or CS player it does not really matter for gaming, as long as you get a reasonable fast IPS.

So Newegg has 10% off IPS monitors right now. I'm really thinking about picking up the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM which would end up costing around $190. Does it ever really get cheaper than this? I just want to eventually get another monitor by the time August rolls around so I've got time to shop around.

Dell doesn't put the U2312HM on sale much in the state so I think $190 is pretty good. The lowest it's been in Canada is $179 iirc but sales are often around $190.

I recently bought my new PC and I feel that my 7year old Viewsonic 1680x1050 isn't good enough for my new baby.
I only play games on my comp with a bit of web browsing, no competitive gaming or anything special.
Got the usual 3570k and GTX 670 in my new PC

I know there's a debate about IPS vs TN for gaming so I am kinda lost on what monitor would be the price.

I was looking at the usual Dell U2312HM, but it's pretty much on the higher end of the budget I wanna spend. I am also looking at a couple of Asus monitors, but I reallllly can't make out which one would be better for me. The ones I'm looking at are the

The Asus VG23AH is theoretically the best all round 60hz monitor on the market. The only problem is that some people can see the passive 3D sheet, which may appear as grey lines on the screen. If you don't wear glasses, you should be fine and shouldn't see them. If you do wear glasses, try and find a place with good return policies if you want to try that monitor out.

Uh...possibly the Asus MX239H, if you're sticking with IPS. Its AH-IPS so the image quality is better than older generation IPS monitors simply because its got a less obtrusive antiglare coating. That's just me though, I've never been the fan of distinctly matte displays.

If you're willing to up the budget by around $100, these 2560x1440 27" monitors are a very viable option, especially since you have the horsepower.

Some of the sale prices Dell has on their Canadian site are pretty crazy. I got my U2312HM over a year and a half ago for $189 and that was just after it came out. Now they have the U2412M on for $110 off, so like $259. I am incredibly tempted to buy that. Though I still have to decide between that and a 27" Korean monitor (I'm looking at the X-Star DP2710 PLS monitor. A local computer store actually imports these and the Achievas and sells them for a slight mark-up so I can at least check them out since they have a display model. They only sell pixel perfect monitors too and let you check before you buy).

The things that are making me more lean toward getting the Dell are that my video card may have trouble running games at 2560x1440 (I have a Radeon 6950 2GB. I do not want to upgrade it. It runs everything great at 1920x1080), and that to run my 15" Macbook Pro on it I will have to get a dual-link DVI connector, which are not exactly cheap, even on Monoprice. Plus there's the space issue. I can fit 3 monitors on my desk if I get a U2412M. With a 27" monitor, I will be lucky to fit 2. I already have the means to connect 3 monitors if I want (active DVI to DP connector). Decisions, decisions.

I have the VS239H-P and it works great (I mostly play CS:GO). IPS really makes things look more vibrant.
