Question for those in the know:

I currently have a Samsung 2233RZ and am looking to add a second monitor (had an old Viewsonic that died). Given my main monitor, this monitor will strictly be for video viewing, stream chats, browsing etc... So something competent and fairly cheap that's similar in shape/ratio to the 2233RZ would be preferable.

~22" 16:10 is not that common anymore. You'll lose vertical pixels unless you get a 1080p monitor.

Maybe you can try the BenQ GW2255 for $120:
http://ncix.ca/products/?sku=79926&promoid=1293

It's another one of those newish BenQ AMVA monitors, 21.5" 1920x1080.

Hello, any thought on which monitor from the below list I should buy if my primary use is watching movies / playing games.
Any other recommendation is also ok. The budget range is similar to those of below. Thanks for your great help.

I'm looking for a monitor, and it's not really for gaming, so therefore I'm having difficulty finding something.

I have a nice smaller monitor for gaming (I think 21 inches), but I'm looking to add a third monitor that is easy on the eyes, 24 inches preferably, highest resolution possible (I'm guessing that's going to be 1920x1080 at my budget), nice saturated colours, and whatever else people that want a monitor for casual use, homework, reading, watching movies, use. I think a 16 ratio would be preferred too.

Any help would be super great (:

I'd like to buy from memoryexpress.com since it's close to my house, the link to their monitors is below, and they have a selection of 80~, quite a few on sale too, so I hope they have something good.

Of those U2312HM. It has a much better stand than the others, and either lower input lag or better response times than the others too.

Do you really mean saturation? A lot of people in this context really mean contrast. High saturation and being able to display deeper colors than sRGB standard for most material can make images look well... oversaturated and messed up. On the other hand, black levels in pretty much all LCDs are higher than they should be.

BenQ GW2450HM, an AVMA model, has below-average colorspace coverage I think among monitors worthy of consideration, but the contrast is a lot better than on TN and IPS / PLS monitors.

Hello, what about the contrast ratio, the u2312hm model seems to have a very low contrast ratio comparing to other models.
Would that be a huge factor if I'm using the monitor for watching movies.

Are there likely to be problems with a cheap monitor like this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/BenQ-GW2750HM-inch-Full-Monitor/dp/B0081VNB6K/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1364646953&sr=1-3

Budget: £200-250
Use: Mostly watching videos and digital art, with some gaming. Basically I want the largest affordable monitor possible without losing too much quality. My current monitor is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Iiyama-ProLite-E1900S-B2-monitor-speakers/dp/B000JCESWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364648074&sr=8-1
No I'm never serious.

Advertised contrast ratio is not an important statistic for monitors.

First post just looking for some help choosing a monitor.

I will be using it largely for gaming, primarily SC2 but also a bit of fps. I've done a lot of reading about the different types and I think I want to go with an IPS.

I have been looking at the ASUS PA248Q and the Dell UltraSharp U2412m.

Would either of these be suited or would I be better off getting a different/non ips monitor?

Budget is anywhere up to $450 AU

If you're playing a lot of FPS, 120hz might be worthwhile at that budget. The good ones (except for the Asus VG248, which I can't find a solid review on) are listed in the OP. I think Harvey Norman or JB Hi Fi might have them in stock so you can probably play around with it and see if you prefer that over IPS.

The models you've picked are solid choices, especially if 16:10 is of interest. Only get the PA248Q if you want to play your PS3 on it because it has a scaler. The U2412M doesn't have the scaler so its cheaper and Dell has coupons (51PXC283$TRR13 should get your 15% off) and 30% sales occasionally.

If you want to save some cash with 16: 9, the Dell U2312HM is a solid choice, though minimum brightness is a little high.

So I went out today to bestbuy to check out some IPS monitors and see what they were like before making a new monitor purchase. I came away with 2 questions. Can someone who's gone from a non-IPS monitor to an IPS monitor comment on if it felt weird at all in transition? Then my other question is if I have my lights off most of the time when watching movies/playing games would it still be worth it to get an IPS monitor?

I'm asking the first question because when looking at a non IPS monitor next to an IPS monitor the colors and picture looked better on the non IPS monitor. The only difference I saw was the lack of glare, obviously, on the IPS monitor. Since glare mostly only occurs when you have background light I wasn't sure getting an IPS would really matter. Not to mention the IPS coating made it look like the monitor was dirty compared to the non IPS monitor lol. That's why I'm asking if someone has gone from one to the other and what their thoughts are on it.

What's weird? Weirdest was going from CRT to LCD panels back in the day.

Which model monitors were you looking at in store?

Not all IPS monitors have antiglare coating. How do you define "better" for colors? A lot of times, in store, brightness is jacked up, contrast settings and saturation can be way off, etc. Issues like some colors being a little oversaturated and past sRGB / certain colors being clipped / bad gamma curve due to improper settings may not be apparent unless you're looking at some test images or use it for a little while.

It's not really that any colors are supposed to look better on one panel technology as opposed to another—particularly if you're not some professional that needs a wide gamut display and you notice that no TN panels have the backlighting for that because TN panels are unsuitable for color-critical work anyway. It's just that most TN panel monitors look noticeably different from top to bottom when looked at head-on, because of the difference of viewing angle (unless maybe viewed from a far distance, hence small size and small difference in angle). Then again, with a dark image and position too close to an IPS monitor, you could see IPS glow.

Hello, below ~$200 please

200 USD? Country? Does the gaming include a lot competitive fps or racing or some other fast-moving twitchy genre?

The two big differences when going from a non-IPS monitor to an IPS monitor are color and glare.
The color gamut on my IPS panel is >99% RGB compared to a barely sRGB gamut on my old TFT panel.
It's hugely noticeable, especially in games like SC2 with lots of bright saturated colors.
As far as the glare situation goes, the actual individual pixels in an IPS display are closer together, and combined with the typical high quality anti-glare coating found on most IPS panels and everything will stay sharp and clean under almost any lighting condition.

Not specifically the U2312HM but another Dell variant vs a non IPS LG i think it was. All the monitors were basically displaying a windows 8 ad on them. I don't know. It just seemed like the only quality difference was that anti glare would be good if I had lights on while watching stuff. But as you said display monitors get all jacked up and wouldn't necessarily be the same as if I had it on my own settings. I'll prob get the Dell just cause of the Dells I did see there I enjoyed the near borderless bevel on them.

Only Dell IPS monitors with thin bezels I can think of are the new S2x40L (S2x40M?) line that are glossy, so that can't be it... In fact, I can't think of other Dell IPS monitors that aren't some kind of Ultrasharps, out of models in the last few years. You don't mean like U2212HM or some other Ultrasharp of a different size, do you? Or not? The ones you saw had lots of stand adjustments possible?

Anyway, if you don't like the antiglare coating, no need to subject yourself to that just because a certain class of monitors is preferred among a certain crowd.

There are plenty of other choices with relatively thin bezels too.

Hi, yes USD, actually i can go up to $200~$250.
I'm not from US but I guess I can still find the model you recommend where I live.
I mainly play games like Dota/LoL or facebook games and watch movies with the computer.
Thanks.

How about being nice to Myrmidon and actually telling him where you live/what your retailers are?
