I haven't looked at display fusion but I've been using Ultramon for years and it's awesome.

I have no idea what panel model that Asus and Benq currently use but fundamentally there isn't a real difference. Its a bit dodgy for me to say that they're basically the same but realistically, the biggest difference will be whether or not the application of the hardware is good, as you probably know quite well having had some trouble with black crush/banding.

Windows 8 is also a pretty good solution, though its quite expensive if you didn't get in on that $15 upgrade deal.

I'm currently in the market for a monitor priced around $200 mostly for SC2 and the occasional FPS game. I've been considering these three options:

Asus 23'' VS239H
LG 23'' IPS234V
Samsung 23'' S23A300B

I don't think the VS-239H-P isn't available where I'm from, and I heard that the IPS234V doesn't have the best input lag time. They all cost around the same, so which should I get for my purposes?

This might be a late response. IPS234V has perfectly fine input lag, there's no way it doesn't (0.7ms, it basically doesn't have any). The problem is the rather slow pixel response but it might be a problem for you. All I can say is that it isn't quick and definitely isn't 5ms GTG.

What store options do you have?

Currently my store options at my price range are the ones I listed above. And yes, I was referring to the pixel response and not input lag time, my bad. Do you know exactly how slow it is, and will it be noticeable in an RTS like SC2?

I think it's probably on the "okay" level for something like SC2 (maybe even some faster stuff too), though noticeable if you're looking out for it and relatively sensitive.

Did you see prad's figures?
http://www.prad.de/new/monitore/test/2012/test-lg-ips234v-pn-teil6.html#Reaktionsverhalten

Those bar graphs from top to bottom are black/white, fastest gray-to-gray, average of 15 gray-to-gray, and then processing delay + some average response time (= total input lag). The two numbers are for one transition (black to white) time and then for the other (white to black). The square wave thing to the right is how the change occurs over time. If there's overshoot past the dotted line, that means reverse ghosting. If it's slow to get to the top and bottom, that means slower response time and ghosting.

Compare to other monitors, like a relatively fast IPS/PLS
http://www.prad.de/new/monitore/test/2012/test-lg-ips234v-pn-teil6.html#Reaktionsverhalten

The non-P version VS239H:
http://www.prad.de/new/monitore/test/2012/test-asus-vs239h-teil6.html#Reaktionsverhalten

A fast TN 120 / 144 Hz monitor:

I'm looking for a new monitor, I'd like it to be between 23 and 27'', 120+ hz and minimal input lag. I'm not sure how dated the op is. There's a frys/best-buy near me, so it'd be nice if they carried it.

I have an hd7950 and i5 2500k @ 4.4ghz, wanting to play games like cs:go at 120hz.

Unless you sit rather far from the screen, I don't really know about 27" 1080p TN. Doesn't seem like a great idea IMHO.

Two options that aren't in the OP are the newer Asus VG248QE and BenQ XL2411T. I think the former is what you want.

That Asus monitor is perfect in terms of what I wanted, thanks.

So I'm thinking about getting the Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM, read the TFT thing about it. If one were to try to be as critical about it as possible, what would the criticisms be? I know that it's a bit brighter than normal (110-300 cd/m2), but that's actually fine for where my computer is at. One thing I am somewhat concerned about is that a lot of the reviews I read say that motion blur is a problem on it, whereas others say they can't notice it - but I'm fairly picky about anything looking non smooth, as I tend to pick up on it instantly.

It's an LCD display, and furthermore an IPS. You're not going to have 0 blur. U2312HM also has some reverse ghosting, so artifacts on top of the blur.

I don't know if there's much that can be said that you didn't already. Some people don't notice it, and others do. This isn't an issue of smoothness or fluidity of motion though.

Other complaints non-professional users could have would be say panel uniformity (all monitors have issues to some degree, depends on the individual one you get, but QC on these LG panels is not so hot sometimes) and the grainy anti-glare coating.

noob question: Is there a possibility to adjust the brightness just while playing sc2 in windowed(fullscreen) mode ?

Hmm, what would be the best monitor given that as far as games go, it'd be mostly SC2 and maybe a bit of FPS games? Say around $220 or below. Assuming no more than 23"-24", but resolution is 1920x1080. Tbh I prefer smaller monitors but I think 21.5" is as far down as it goes for 1080p.

Use the monitor's physical controls. I can't think of a single monitor that doesn't have physical brightness controls.

If you like really small monitors (what's the real sweet spot for you?), the Asus VS229H-P (its in the OP) will work for you. IPS screen, has Asus' trace free controls, 1920x1080 in a 21.5" package. Really high contrast, all small IPS screens are really good in that regard.

The Asus MX239H is probably the best choice on the market right now but its a 23" monitor and $10 more than your budget. The main difference is that its AH-IPS, which is basically your typical matte IPS but with a much lighter antiglare coating. That is to say, the sparkle effect is not as excessive. It has all the makings of a good monitor (ignoring the stand...) but I haven't seen a proper review of it so I can't be 100% certain.

Shaky stands are really annoying lol >_<. And the MX239H seems to be sold out everywhere except Amazon where it is "will ship withint 2 to 4 weeks" wtf. Sounds as if there's gonna be a big delay on it. The VS229H-P reviews seem to say its stand is really shaky too >_>

Although tbh 21.5 is probably a lot better by my tastes than 23".

Shitty stands is par for the course with low budgets. Trust me, you won't find anything half decent in that price range. Maybe an Dell U2312HM on special but that's the best you're going to get.

If they have VESA mounts, you should be able to find a cheap replacement stand off eBay. HP monitor stands are plentiful and, as far as I know, all of the ones with the original Quick Release system have standard VESA screw holes.

Well, there's the U2212HM at ~$200-220, and it's slightly better than the U2312HM (higher contrast), though slightly worse stock gamma than the VS229H-P (or maybe it was just model variance). Small differences overall, and there's ICC Profiles on TFTCentral anyway. If you get the VS229H-P + aftermarket stand you end up a little cheaper than the Dell I guess so the choice is up to you.

VESA mount? Something like the HP mounts are good but there are plenty of other options too, for example...

Tilt/swivel adjust, rotate, height fixed after installation ($21 plus shipping, monoprice):
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?p_id=5970

Tillt/swivel/height/rotate all adjustable during use ($43 shipped, Ergotron Neo-Flex):
http://www.rakuten.com/prod/ergotron-33-310-060-neo-flex-lcd-stand-ergotron-neo-flex-lcd-stand-up/202785777.html

Actually on a budget the Dell Professional line have decent stands and can even rotate to portrait, and they're usually slightly cheaper than the Ultrasharps, but those are TNs... I've tried using them in portrait before and got strange looks from other people. That's okay, as the monitor was getting strange looks from me.
