Thanks for the quick response, just a couple of follow up questions. I do go through periods of playing a lot of FPS, realistically how much of a difference is a 120hz monitor going to make (if I get a pc capable of gaming at that fps)?
Will the visual experience be that much better with an IPS as opposed to a nice TN monitor?

Just some additional info, I only plan to use my PC with this monitor, and living in Australia my retailers would be pccasegear.com, scorptec.com.au and cplonline.com.au

brand new Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23" IPS LED LCD Monitor - 16: 9 - 8 ms

what settings do you reccomend ? I want everything to look crisp and bright for starcraft 2

cant find good settings everything is kind of yellow and dull compared to my cheaper acer... looks like my acer does when flux is on

SC2 is wayyy to dark even on the brightest settings ... did I get a defective monitor ?

If you can push well above 60 FPS, then sure 120hz is probably a good bet if you notice the difference 120hz provides. If you can't maintain 120hz/don't care that much about the benefit of 120hz, then I wouldn't bother. It differs from person to person, some people will claim that 120hz monitors are the best thing since sliced bread while others prefer gaming on their 2560x1440 IPS monitors.

Good IPS monitors are listed in the OP. The Asus MX239H is a good alternative too if the thick antiglare coating on older IPS monitors is a problem.

PC Case Gear is probably the best if you live in Victoria. Scorptec is very expensive for a little better aftermarket service and CPL has pretty bad post-sales service and isn't that much cheaper than PC Case Gear.

It sounds like yellow tinting though it won't be as severe as what you're claiming. If you bought it from Dell, I'd suggest talking to them about it. You should be able to replace it promptly. Perhaps the Acer has a huge blue bias (done on cheaper monitors so they appear brighter) so the Dell appears too warm for you.

Reset the monitor and try putting it at 20 Brightness, 75 Contrast, and into the Custom Color preset mode. Change the red, blue, and green values and you might find something you prefer.

As for darkness, I'm not sure what you mean. Peak brightness is something like 350 cd/m2, enough to burn most people's eyes out and definitely brighter than your Acer.

Thanks!

I'll go check out some monitors at JB and see what I like :D

I think I was making this decision more complex than it needed to be

I currently have a Samsung Syncmaster 2253bw (1650x1050) and although it is a decent monitor I feel like I am not getting the most out of my current computer (i5 3570/HD 7970) and would like to get a nicer monitor. I mainly just play games and browse the internet. As for games I am kind of concerned about input lag since I occasionally play SF4 and any lag can be detrimental. However, I don't know if getting a TN monitor is worth getting since it wouldn't be a huge upgrade to what I have right now.

Some monitors that I am considering:
Dell U2412M
Dell U2410
ASUS PA246Q

Right now the Dell U2410 right now looks really appealing since you can get it at Newegg for $360 which is the lowest I've seen by a lot. If you guys have any other suggestions please let me know. I've also considered the 30" monitors but they are way too expensive and I don't think my table can accommodate that size.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

U2410 is a wide gamut monitor, which means oversaturated colors unless you use some type of sRGB-type setting or profile. Some programs don't play nice with ICC profiles though. Contrast is pretty meh. Overall, for most users it's probably worse than the other two options. It's more of a professional monitor for those who work with color-sensitive material and need wide gamut. But it does have 1:1 pixel mapping IIRC. Are you playing SC4 PC version or on console?

Input lag on these monitors is really low. It's just that the response (pixel color transition) times are slower than on most TNs, which causes motion blurring. The characters mostly don't move that fast in SF4 (lol it's not MvC2 or GG or whatever) and there are plenty of trailing and ink effects anyway, which mask hardware-induced blurring. So it's probably not much of a big deal.

U2412HM does not have 1:1 pixel mapping. I think the PA246Q does.

I am playing the PC version.

SInce you seem very knowledgeable, I would like to ask if the motion blurring/ghosting would be noticeable when compared to the monitor that I have right now?

Also, I am sticking with 16:10 monitors as I find the 16 to be too wide. I also find pixel mapping to be very important since I tend to play older games a lot as well.

With those, compared to most options, the main advantages are just the 1920x1200 resolution and consistency in colors / gamma / etc. between top and bottom of the monitor when viewed from a normal distance. Well, I guess for the tier of monitors you're looking at here, the factory calibration is probably better too. It's not like IPS stands for Incredibly Perfect Screen.

With the difference in motion performance, it really depends on what type of movement you're seeing, how sensitive you are to it, and how good and bad the two monitors you're comparing are. Hard to say.

Any particular reason you're looking at the PA246Q but not the PA248Q? The latter has a bit lower latency and controllable pixel overdrive.

Actually, you see the pixel mapping capability on that page as well.

I know it sounds weird, but um, are there any good monitors for 1366 x 768? Been using this res all my life and I want to get a better monitor with the same resolution.

There isn't. There are a few solid 4:3 monitors but that's not what you're looking for, unfortunately. 16: 9 aspect ratio wasn't really used in the age of low resolution panels.

Anyone ever figure out exactly what's underneath the hood in monoprice's 27" IPS? Is it the same as a catleap, same panel, etc?

Just doing a quick skim of [H] and OCN, I'm seeing murmurs that it's a rebranded "FSM 270-YG." Not a Catleap, but one of the other available Korean panels that are found on eBay. I hope you're not bringing up Catleap b/c you think they can overclock, because I doubt they can. Overlord is selling the 2B boards individually and 120Hz.net has consistently increased their price of the 2B's with each successive batch. I.e. if it can overclock, you will get gouged now haha.

I'd like to suggest adding the NEC EA244WMi to the recommendation list. It's a 24" 1920x1200 e-IPS W-LED backlit with light anti-glare (not found in any other 1920x1200 IPS/PLS except Samsungs, as far as I know)

The good: ~97% sRGB color gamut, factory settings (grays, colors, gamma), high contrast (~1100-1200:1), panel uniformity, low input lag, USB hub (2.0 though), good ergonomics

The mediocre: decent motion performance but slightly behind U2412M and PA248Q

The bad: somewhat low frequency PWM for backlight dimming (~250-300Hz)

From these reviews:
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/52827_5/Nakonec-to_dozhdalis._Obzor_i_testirovanie_monitora_NEC_MultiSync_EA244WMi.html

http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=cs&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=cs&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http://extrahardware.cnews.cz/recenze/nec-prekvapil-ea244wmi-je-levny-polomatny-ips-1920-x-1200-px-test

I think it's a slightly better alternative to the Dell, Asus, and Samsung offerings.

Availability is a little weak in the US, it seems. B&H has it for $390, which seems like a reasonable price. I think I saw it for $370 a couple of weeks ago.

More importantly, the thing has a scaler and apparently a low, low input lag of ~5ms or so.

I'll add it in. I agree, its a good 16:10 package. Shame about the motion performance.

I don't know if this is relevant for anybody, but in US:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260108

Current newegg shellshocker, for however long it lasts: Dell S2240L for $130 shipped. If you want a cheap glossy 21.5" 1080p IPS, that's it. However, it has a bit of reverse ghosting, a stand that only tilts, and no VESA mount.
