I can really recommend the LG W2486L. It was quite expensive when I bought it 3 years ago. But it still kicks ass with it's colors. No lag. Only 60Hz though. But a lot of pro players use it at their pro gaming houses including IM (no shocker there) and Flash. Not sure if whole kt rolster use them. But Flash definetly used it last time I saw his booth at the pro gaming house of KT.

Hi there! I have a question about 3D-Gaming.
First off, i don't have the opportunity to test 3D monitors at my local vendors ( 3D tv is no problem). But i watched the "3D-must-see" (like: Avatar, Prometheus, The Hobbit HFR)

I want to get into 3D in generel. I have a little knowledge about it, and not quite sure if my setup will work and which new hardware i will need. So my setup is very low budget, because i don't want to spend vast sums of money just to find out that i don't like it somehow.

To the facts:

CPU: 2500k not oc'ed
RAM: 8 GB Kingston something

Graphic: GTX 460

Misc.: SSD, 550 watt PSU, Mugen III cooler

I want to buy this monitor: Acer GD245HQABID

120 hz, Full HD, LED, integrated IR ermitter

I'm aware off the problems of LEDs, i got used to it, thanks to my netbook, yay....

So, i guess it will be no problem to watch a 3D Blu ray. And i'm sure i can get a very good clue off how games are feeling with a high end setup.
As the monitor is the cheapest in combination with Nvidia Vision 1 (Nvidia Vision 2: i don't see the benefit now, to pay at least 500 € if i haven't tested it yet), i hope my pc is ready for this. What i'm also looking for is:

would it be enough if i would buy a new graphic card (maybe psu too? don't hope so^^) ... wow, it took some time to figure out the right smiley which wouldn't be destroyed by the brace D; ...
and overclock my cpu a little bit?

Thank you very much!

Awesome thread guys! I love these threads on the tech forums it has so much info for gamers!

I am looking for a new monitor soon as my shitty acer x233h needs an improvement with my new computer. What do you guys mean that 120hz needs a powerful computer? Does it mean that I would need to have a constant 120+fps to make it a big difference? I usually play most competitive games in lower settings for better advantage (sc2, dota 2, cs:go) so hitting 120+ fps is not hard. Would 120hz be worth it for me then?

I am a competitive gamer and I want to know what is the best monitor out there for me? low input lag is a must. I need every advantage I can get! Money isn't really a problem but I LOVE best price/performance things. I don't ever see a reason to spend extra money for features I do not need. What would you guys recommend? I would like it to be 120hz.

Edit: Just did some research and supposedly there is a big craze going on about lightboost and 120hz monitors. Seems like for gaming you will need a monitor for lightboost now. I am going to wait till they do more research and support before choosing the best monitor =)

@Striker.superfreunde

The only good 120hz monitors are all in the OP. The Acer is dreadful at everything. Read the OP for more information about monitor performance and how spec sheets are useless.

@kuruptt
120hz is maybe not that great for SC2 but its definitely useful for CS:GO. The point the OP is making is that if you can't get anywhere near 120hz most of the time, what's the point of getting 120hz?

All of the good 120hz monitors are in the OP so pick your poison. The Lightboost thing is cool but I believe you must be able to maintain 120hz stable, or close to it, because its manipulating the backlight or something along those lines. I could be wrong, I don't know too much about it and haven't used it before.

Yeah, but I probably can reach 120fps+ in the games that I want to play because I like to play on lower settings in all competitive games. They just give better performance overall. But yeah I would really like to hear some reviews from TL members that has done the lightboost thing =p It seems like the new big thing for LCD monitors.

I haven't looked more than a minute at that thread, but I'm guessing it's just turning off the lights during the early portions of a frame? That's the part of a frame where the pixels are still changing. If for a pixel the new frame contains a different color than the old one, then it will be in a state of change between the two, or maybe even overshooting the value. If in every cycle you only show the portion where the pixels have pretty much all stabilized to the new values (or some approximation of that), that should naturally decrease the motion blurring you see.

Or maybe I should read more and guess less.

I haven't read into the actual technology but I've read into the results. You get better motion performance (people claim CRT-like performance) but apparently more input lag, messed up non-adjustable colours, and flickering if you're sensitive to that sort of stuff.

Myrmidon, you have the right idea. The gist of it seems to be getting the backlight to strobe at the "right" intervals to display an image without pixels in the middle of changing (what we know as trailing or ghosting). The strobe is apparently fixed at 120hz, which might explain why you basically have to maintain 120 FPS, for reasons you mentioned in your post.

I need a new main monitor for gaming & adobe cs6 (nothing professional), and I'm torn between these choices:

Dell U2312HM - $220
Dell S2340M 293M3-IPS-LED - $160
ASUS VS239H-P - $176

What's the lowest price that can be found for the Dell UltraSharp U2412M? Any good but cheaper 1920x1200 monitors? I want the extra room for a boost in productivity, but I'm not sure if I want to go over $250. I was also thinking of some cheap 25-27" monitor at 1080p, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or investment.

This is tempting: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?p_id=9579&seq=1&format=2&ref=cj
if you can use the 20% monoprice coupon newsletter promotion.

My old ASUS VH236H will become my second monitor.

The Dell U2412M is pretty much the cheapest 1920x1200 monitor that isn't second hand. The lowest I've seen it go in Australia is around $240-250.

Those Monoprice monitors have low contrast if their internals are exactly the same as the original Korean version. The only good thing about them will be the resolution.

The Dell S2340M is a good bet if you don't mind gloss. It has a bit of reverse ghosting but I don't think it should be a huge concern. Depends on your tolerances to be honest.

I own many apple products so I'm use to the ups & downs of gloss, but I do like how the colors seem to pop out more. The overdrive on the 2340m's overdrive scares me but it still seems like an awesome e-ips monitor for $160.

What's your opinion on 24" 1920x1200 vs 27" 1080p for gaming or productivity? Is ppi more important than just having a bigger screen? Will there be black bars for some games running at 1920x1200?

I just upped my budget to 300 dollars so I have been reading up on the Dell S2740L since it's on sale atm for $290. The thing is I'm not even sure if I need or would like an IPS monitor, but always wondered what the hype was about since I find myself doing more photo & video editing than actual gaming.

With gaming, 27" 1080P is OK for IPS screens but its not great for productivity and awful if you sit close to your computer. Its an "entertainment" screen so to speak. With productivity, you want resolution/screen real-estate.

You probably don't need an IPS screen but they're not expensive anymore (160$ for a 23", I mean why would you pay for a TN screen if its the same price?) and 60hz TN screens aren't much better, if at all, at general gaming. You can probably find a difference if you look closely but a 60hz monitor is still a 60hz monitor.

If you don't wear tinted/polarized/whatever glasses, the Asus VG23AH is a great option.

So, I got 2 LG IPS234Vs today and I have a minor issue. One monitor has different colours to the other. Now I'm expecting a minor difference but one monitor looks like it has a yellow/greyish tint. On this site, light blue colours in the background have a grey/yellowish tiny and I'm not sure what I'd need to adjust to try and fix it (Perhaps one of the RGB settings?)

Could it be because I'm using one monitor with a DVI cable and another with a VGA cable with a VGA>DVI adapter on the end? The monitor that looks good is using a VGA cable and I tried a VGA cable w/ DVI adapter on the monitor that looks 'off' and it's the same.

Doubt it. Monitors rarely come out of the box without some sort of defect. The only solution, if its actually tinting, is try to colour correct it out through adjusting RGB (it won't work but might make it less pronounced) or return it for another one.

I see, don't really want to return it, but one just seems to be tinted either blue or grey-ish. It's not to the point that it looks really bad but it is noticeable when I have certain pages/apps open. White text on Spotify looks ever so slightly yellow-ish and the background colour on the TL sidebar just looks darker

I'm interested in getting a 27" catleap or similar for Australia (perth to be precise), but I'm just wondering if there was a recommended place to get them from? Also, is there anywhere similar to here(edit: overlordcomputer.com, bb code is breaking) that bins the monitors capable of above ~70hz that ships to Australia for a reasonable price? The price of shipping alone was over $500 from that site iirc.

Thanks.

Not sure how much this will help, as I'm uncertain of the quality of the following monitor in terms of input lag, whether it's a copy of the Catleap panel or something a bit different, like the Hazro or Nexiuz monitors in the UK or the States. But Australia has its own relatively cheap 2560x1440 from Kogan:

http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/27-wqhd-led-ips-monitor/

Might be available other stores too.

Mmm, I'm a bit concerned because the catleap version with multiple input types do have a much higher input lag than the dual dvi only version (iirc). It's a lot safer though than the ~$330 ones I could see on ebay, with it's one year warranty and all, although I've never come a defective monitor (or other hardware really) in years of working with electronics, so I tend to ignore warranties. Oh decisions decisions.

I've read through them, and i guess, my best option is to wait half a year, and go more into the TV direction as i will need a new one anytime soon. Also, more detailed specs of xbox 720 and PS 4 will be released until than.

Don't get that. The Kogan looks like a re-badged DGM IPS-2701WPH. Assuming Kogan did nothing to the internal electronics, its got around 25-30ms of input lag and contrast of around 500:1. According to TFT Central, at a usable brightness of around 150cd/m2, you've got a black depth of 0.30cd/m2. Terrible is the only word for it. Its not cheap either, you're better off paying the extra $100 for the Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM when it goes on sale.

Kogan is apparently pretty awful when it comes to customer service so warranty claims might still be messy. I wouldn't be surprised, they're in the business of undercutting and not in the business of providing the best consumer experience ever.

Yes waiting is the best idea. Most 120hz monitors are going out of stock for some reason. Waiting for half a year should give you more options to pick from.
