Price under $400 should be easy, what stores have you do access to? Its hard to pick the right monitor since I don't know what Liechtenstein has and what the market price is like over there.

oh sorry i just picked that country since it sounded cool. Actual country is australia. If you dont know much about AU, i can order online too (in this case though prob $350 since shipping might bump it).
Edit: Also forgot to say, thanks for offering to help and caring enough to even read the country!

So, I've been looking for a monitor to purchase over these past few days. I thought I had decided on the tried and true Asus VH236H.. But I was browsing for deals today and stumbled upon the Asus VS247H-P, which just so happens to be the same price for a limited time. Before I get into the monitors, I wanted to say that I'll mainly be playing FPS games, with some RTS thrown in. I could care less about any speakers on them, because I'll be using headphones. And lastly, I can't afford to spend any more than these monitors (~$160).

Now, after checking them both out, I honestly can't decide which to get, and wanted some opinions.

From what I gather, the VS247H-P is a slightly larger monitor. IPS panel (EDIT: my mistake, it's TN), with LED back lighting and better colors.
The VH236H is supposedly very good for gaming, which is pretty much all I'm going to be doing on them. Another thing is that the "flimsy" stands on both make no difference, as I'm going to be mounting whichever I get.

I was curious to see what others thought of either of them, owners or non-owners. The main reason I ask is because I can't find many reviews that go in depth on the VS247H-P. Thanks for any help. Ah, forgot to add - I have to purchase it on Amazon.

VS247H-P and the other VS series other than VS229 models and VS239 models are TN. Which may be for the best, anyway, if you're playing some twitchier fps.

Haha, seems you're correct. I guess I missed the asterisk that designates "select models" when I glanced over that chart.

Good lord, thought the VS was their budget IPS line but turns out they have a TN monitor in that lineup...?

If Asus' website can be trusted Myrmidon is correct. The VS247H-P has a TN panel. Obvious since it claims 2ms response time and the viewing angles aren't 178/178. It should have really good motion performance since it has trace-free, which lets you adjust the pixel response to how you like it.

The Dell S2340L is fairly decent. Its full gloss but has some reverse ghosting. It has VGA and HDMI inputs so you'd use the HDMI with the PS3 and the VGA with the desktop. I under that you prefer matte but here is a 15% off coupon (51PXC283$TRR13) that might interest you.

The Dell U2312HM is a decent option too. If you want to use your console with it painlessly, your desktop/laptops's GPU needs to have DisplayPort. The above discount coupon also works with it 15% off discount coupon.

Those are the two I recommend on quality and price. All other monitors will have a large premium on them and they won't be significantly better, if at all.

They've got way more TN monitors in VS series than IPS monitors.

VS just stands for "very shaky", referring to the stand.

Alrighty then, so the VS247H-P should be fine for gaming? If that's the case, I'll pick it up over the VH236H. Even if the size difference is only .6", haha. Honestly, anything should be a very large improvement over what I have now. I'm currently using a hand-me-down HP w19. Thanks for the help, both of you

You are quite the man mr. Wom, Thanks! Now to compare those two.
The The Dell S2340L seems like a good budget option, and has most of the features i want, and the discount so I think it is a good fallback (If only it was matte id probably by it right now).

However on the page of the Dell U2312HM I could not find anywhere that it has a HDMI port. I understand that I can use different types of cables/ adapters but I think having HDMI would be too convenient to give up.

I don't want to be too obsessive over a single product, but Im wondering how do you think the Asus ProArt PA248Q stacks up against the above mentioned dell monitors? The main differences to my knowledge is just the USB 3.0 ports vs the 2.0, and the bigger size (which i think is due to the face its just taller, so probably not too noticeable) and its also got hdmi too, which unfortunately the Dell U2312HM doesnt :/.

Sorry if I have too many questions, the confusing way companies set up their websites and my lack of knowledge make it hard to compare between monitors effectively.

Sidenote: Just a general question for you people.

Most TV's these days max out at 1080p as far as I am aware. So im guessing the next generation of consoles wont be outputting much over 1080p, if at all. With that said, do you people feel there to be any real advantage (either now or in the foreseeable future) of having a resolution higher than 1080p (apart from maybe graphic design or just having more space)? I know apple products are pushing out the idea of a retina display, such as with their newest MBP and the ipad, etc., but I'm not sure if any major brand has a plan to make retina-quality monitors mainstream in the near future. Anyways, just a thought, im sure 1080p isn't going to be outdated soon and i should be happy.

PA248Q is 1920x1200, so more like the equivalent of the U2412HM, except that IIRC (double-check this) it can do 1:1 pixel mapping, so if you output from some source like a console that doesn't do 1200p, it will not stretch the image but rather add black bars to maintain correct aspect ratio.

You're right that those Dell Ultrasharps don't have HDMI.

There's something of a push for "4K" (around 3840x2160, 4x pixels as 1080p, or a little different) for TVs and other displays. Should be in the future. Current consoles run internal resolutions generally below 1080p and then upscale. But I'm assuming next-gen consoles would mostly be running games at 1080p or lower internally, yeah—then again, I don't really follow that closely. Nexus 10 tablet has a 2560x1600 display, so it's not just Apple.

More pixels can help for a wide variety of work, can look better for reading text or any number of tasks. At further viewing distances and for worse eyes, shouldn't make much difference. Anyhow, 1080p seems to be enough for a lot of people, so even if it will be supplanted in the future, it shouldn't be that soon.

Ah okay, yes you are right it does 1:1 whereas the dell variety of the same size doesn't, so it will be stretched (which is a definite no for me).

Shame, on the dell website they seem like a good buy, except for the fact that itll mean all my hdmi cables are a waste. How would one go about connecting a device like a ps3 to that Dell Ultrasharp monitor is beyond me, maybe an adaptor?

Somewhat of a novely, but the 29" ultra widescreen is on sale in my country... although It's probably just too wide for me to see without turning my neck.

Yeah, I doubt next gen consoles will have the power to natively render 4K resolution games at 60frames so probably by the next next generation we might need to upgrade.

Thanks for your insight and help.

Not much I imagine. Skyrim won't benefit too much from it either. If you don't wear polarized or filtered glasses, the Asus VG23AH is probably the best gaming monitor on the market. It has some of the best 60hz motion performance, can be driven to run at 72hz, is IPS/PLS, and has a wide range of inputs.

Yes an adapter works fine. A HDMI/DVI adapter should work fine. Just get the cheapest one from JayCar. When I had a monitor without HDMI, I used a DVI <-> HDMI adapter that hooked up a DVI cable to my PS3. The signal is the same IIRC so you just need the plugs.

The 29" monitor is nice for bezel-less Eyefinity like gameplay. Shame about the input lag.

Oh, the reason I didn't mention the Asus ProArt PA248Q is because its bloody expensive in Australia compared to Dell offerings, especially with that 15% off discount code.

the VG23AH does 3D right .... my birthday is coming up so price doesnt matter much ... that is definitely the best gaming monitor ?

also my graphics card is a gtx 570 with 1 mini HDMI and 2 DVI

now that I think about it if it is 3D I would probably use it for PS3 sometimes as well

but 23inch is about the perfect size so thats a plus for the VG23AH

HA! I had a really good laugh I think maybe half or more of the negative customer reviews for these monitors mention the stand.

Some questions from me, since I can't seem to figure out the answers myself:

- why aren't there like, almost any 1920x1200 VA monitors on the market? I can't seem to find any, and I would love one for work (software engineer). It seems to be the best panel tech for doing actual work, yet most are 1920x1080. I saw some from Eizo, like the FlexScan SX2262W, but it's wide gamut for one (so more expensive and ccfl-backlit to) and not available to regular consumers. Is 1920x1200 on 22" only a dream? Also for ~$500 max with decent motion performance as well....

- why the hell can't lenovo make a ThinkPad with an IPS panel higher than 1366x768? I want a 12.5 to 14" laptop with a Track Point and decent screen. Such a thing does not seem to exist (X1 Carbon is a good TN but still TN).

They can and did make a thinkpad with an ips panel, 1600x1200 resolution. You just have to go back in time to the t60

One of my co-workers held on to his t60 for as long as humanly possible, until the thing completely bricked and tech support refused to help him with it anymore. He was very unhappy

Best solution I have for you about shit options of vertical pixels is to simply take a second widescreen monitor and rotate it. Use that monitor for code, use the other monitor for other shit. 1920+ vertical pixels is pretty hot, and as long as your code has a reasonable line length policy, you shouldn't ever be running off the edge horizontally.

Can anyone suggest a monitor for me? Ideally looking to purchase within the next 24 hours.
I'd like to pick up from this store - http://www.memoryexpress.com/Category/LCDMonitors

I'll be using it for gaming, looking to get 2-3 depending on price, ideally around $200 per monitor but I can go up if there is a noted jump in quality.

Well, there's a bunch of good options depending on what exactly you want.

E.g. for 120Hz the XL2420T, or S23A700D, or VG236H

IPS/PLS: VG23AH, maybe even the S24A850DW; if you're interested in high-rez, the PB278Q looks good from the reviews I've seen (even though it's not in the OP yet) - typical ~20ms input lag for high-res monitors but shouldn't be a problem unless you're a FPS or otherwise sensitive or competitive gamer.

EDIT: Clearly, I'm pointing out some of the more expensive options. The ~$100-200 are going to be, for the most part, significantly worse, or have at least one fatal flaw e.g. the LG IPS ones that I've noticed, don't seem to have overdrive (so motion blur might get noticeable & annoying), not to mention LG's overdrive has been hit and miss IIRC. Then there's a bunch of BenQ and Acer TN's (can all be ignored if you want a good monitor), the Asus TN's might be somewhat better... but my point is, you have the budget, why get something mediocre (or worse)?

Thanks for the quick response Wabbit.

I'd probably go with a higher quality monitor if you think this store doesn't really have any suitable options.

I checked the VG23AH and it says 5ms response time? I'll want something I won't reget buying, so would you suggest I just pick something else/another store?

Sorry, I know absolutely nothing about monitors, appreciate the help.

edit: also, this store does price matching so the price isn't that big of a deal. Although the monitor is 3D, does that lower performance if I don't ever plan on using 3D?

VG23AH - http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX40481 $289.99
VG23AH - http://www.cendirect.com/main_en/tech_specs.php?rPart_no=TDNU-BT-WH13BI&rSrc=sb $213
Price Matched (+25% difference)
289.99 - 213 = 76.99x.25 = $19.25

So while the site offers it for $289.99, I should be capable of getting it for $193.75 good deal?

The advertised response times don't mean anything. Not using 3D doesn't affect anything.

The VG23AH is $233 at Cendirect, not $213. Mail in rebates are claimed, not applied at checkout. So you would be paying about $220 if you pricematched it at ME which is pretty good.
