The Das Ultimate uses the Cherry MX Brown switch, whereas your BlackWidow uses Cherry MX Blue's. That's ultimately the main difference which you will need to consider.

The difference between these switches is that the blue has a "Click" which is audible and can be felt on each keypress and because of the release point of the switch, you have to almost fully release the key before you can press it again (hope that makes sense, you should understand what I mean anyway). The Cherry MX Brown however is described as being "Tactile" but does not have the audible click that your BlackWidow does, there is still the audible "mechanical" sound from the switch it's just not as loud and doesn't actually click on keypresses. It's a bit hard to explain but you can YouTube and find comparison videos between the two which will demonstrate better.

Edit: Here you go -
(Sorry If I'm not allowed to post YouTube links, please remove if necessary!)

The other differences are that your BlackWidow has macro keys on the left side and blue backlighting. The Das Ultimate does not have either of these, so that's something to consider if you absolutely need them. The Das Ultimate also has blank keycaps, so if you rely on looking down at the keyboard frequently when typing it might not be ideal.

To summarize, the Das Ultimate is more of a "typing purists" keyboard designed for comfort and performance only, the brown switches however make it perfect for RTS gaming.

The BlackWidow is more of a "Gamers" marketed keyboard that has all the "bells and whistles" but I think most would agree, doesn't have the build quality you would expect for a product of this price.

PS. After writing this up I just realized, you didn't specify whether you have the BlackWidow or the BlackWidow Ultimate... I believe the only difference between the two is the blue backlight but someone can correct me if I am wrong about that.

This answers it well, but the Das can come with blue switches. (and there is a brown switch BW as well)

Im liking the leopold.. but maybe thats just because of the price.
Any suggestions?

I just received my leopold red cherry today and I love it. Shipping would most likely be cheaper for you since you live in the US, but since I live in Souther Ontario, Canada I had to pay an extra $22 to local post office for custom fees.

You'll end up paying just $150 something I believe. ( sorry couldn't resist from typing lots of useless stuffs )

EDIT: Less than $150 actually, since they dropped their prices.

Yea I only ended up paying $111.50 for mine I can't wait to get mine!

Was this your first mechanical keyboard?

Black switches vs Blue switches. Read up on them and choose the one you think you will like, ideally go to the store and try them.
afaik they are pretty similar quality wise.

The fact that I'm comfortable with both. But which one is actually smoother/"nice adjective here" ? Btw I'm leaning towards the blackwidow now. Does the ultimate version worth with the price increase vs the normal version?

very different switches... if your not playing Fps or slamming on your keyboard i would go with the blackwidow(blue) if u can pick one up for cheap (60$) may be worth it.. i would not get the ultimate as i dont need/want gimmicky features... you will /should make up your mind on your own for that one.. i would strongly consider the rosewill for 80$ over the questionable quality of the blackwidow

as far as the switches are concerned the black is "smoother" (as it has no tactile feedback)
the blue is Tactile and clicky ( opposite of smooth?? ) but considered better for typing by far

There is no rosewill in Germany, if there are then the EN output. I prefer EN output (used 10 years) but sometimes I need to type stuff like üöä so it's quite annoying and order from newegg costs more even with the coupons LOL

well if you can pick a blackwidow(orig) up at a good price i think that would be the best call assuming u don't play fps or have bear hands and assuming those are the only two options

Disclaimer : not really sure of the availability or prices of mech keyboards in EU

So I have been an avid user of Unicomp Customizers (new Model M, buckling springs) for years and love them, but I have been wanting to try some Cherry's (never even touched one) out recently, especially with the wasdkeyboards.com customization.

I have been thinking of ordering one from wasd, but my main concern is that I have not seen much from anyone on their overall quality. Has anyone actually ordered one? How does the weight and feel seem? I am not concerned with the switches as much with the overall construction.

If anyone has used or has one, please let me know. Thanks guys!

Yeah I'm kind of torn between getting a TKL or full-size for reds... Even if I had that chance I'm not sure if its worth getting it from rosewill since EK is selling their full-sizes for 99$. Go check out their website, I'm not sure how long the sale lasts but EK -is- selling full-size boards for 99$, except for the ones that are sold out, which are the regular mx browns*

Are you talking about a review concerning the WASD keyboard? or their keycaps? From what I know, WASD Keyboards build quality is very good, and the part most people like about it is the full keycap customization which only comes for a slightly higher price. I think they use ABS keycaps as well, so I'm not sure if you know/feel the difference between those and the PBT keycaps, Personally, I use some of the WASD keycaps on my DAS Ultimate, and they fit and feel perfectly fine and normal (in comparison to the other DAS keys, which I think are PBT, don't quote me on the specifics). All in all, I don't think you need to worry about the build quality in WASD, its considered a really good board.

The only thing I don't really like about the WASD keyboard is probably its size. From pictures, it looks like a giant piece of ddong (I prefer the leopold/filco shape with minimum border spaces). But that's personal preference, and can be easily made up for with its customizations.

http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:21078

Thats a geekhack review link, probably has better information since the person actually has it himself.

Anyways, hope I helped.

Thanks man. Yeah, I am really just concerned with the keyboard itself than the caps. Thanks for the link to the review. He says that they have good weight and whatnot. That was my main concern with them was the overall build and structure. As for size, like I said, I am using the Unicomp Model Ms which are nice and huge, so that does not bother me at all.
I am thinking that I will try one out, but then comes the issue of the customization...sometimes having a blank slate is too overwhelming. I liked the red TL key that they show on their site though...that is too cool.

Anyone from Finland has one mechanical keyboard? It feels a lot more than I expected to get a pretty standard mechanical keyboard with brown switches.

156€ included posting and taxing.
I'm talking about this keyboard btw: http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=753

I have a filco Tenkeyless board, and it honestly feels really great in comparison to other MX Blues that i've tried like the ducky & blackwidow, but this could just be my head telling myself the purchase was worth it. Haha, Geekhack will tell you its "teh best keybard in the wrald" though I'm pretty sure, as it was the website that convinced me to try a filco.

In anycase, I love the filco that I own and I don't regret the price i paid at all for it. But if this is something you're considering as for your first keyboard, you might not want to try filco's until you're really sure about a specific switch.

The filco's have a great resale value though, so I guess in that sense it wouldn't really hurt. Filco's are known for their quality.

EDIT: Not from finland though, sorry.

The ultimate just gives you backlighting, for a $40 premium. Which is alot but backlit mech boards are pretty rare. So its worth it if you really want backlighting.

WASD is excellent, filco level weight and feel, but the case is a little bigger (thats not going to bother you with a model M).
Even better than the filco the WASD guy lubes up all the stabilisers before he ships.

Take your time with the customisation though, and check out all the customer creations on WASD's facebook page. Provides alot of inspiration.

Haha, yeah it definitely is overwhelming. I would suggest trying to start off with the pre-set options to give you a good idea of how it looks/head start on the customization. They have semi-customizables as well which is also a lot faster.

Their custom keycaps make me want to go bankrupt
