thanks for the info! how bad are kailh switches exactly? would it be worth picking the chroma up at 50% off (~85 usd) and no shipping cost?

If it's an introduction to mechanical keyboards, sure. It's a neat price for all the lighting options too. You can even pick up some o-rings to dampen the sound a little if wanted. The keycaps on the blackwidow 2013 (and I assume 2014) are unfortunately just basic ABS plastic, but they've got a bit of a rubber coat so they feel much nicer.

If sound is REALLY an issue though, go for the silent version if possible. it'll be much less noisy for your surroundings than the others (think mx blue vs mx brown), and with o-rings they'll be even less noisy. You can get those at for example wasdkeyboards (sponsor of Axiom) or a chinese reseller like banggood.com

I never thought browns were that bad in an office or at home IMO. Blues I could see, or Black switches, but browns are not so bad. People just think it sounds like a keyboard.

My browns were relatively loud for a quiet office when I bottomed them out. If you get o-rings or don't bottom out than it's np.

If you're pounding away, I can see it, I dunno. I've been using mine for years and never gotten a complaint. Standard office usage though, I've always been fine with browns. To each their own I suppose.

Browns are loud if you bottom out, quite quiet if you don't (or if you use thick o-rings i guess)

probably same with reds/blacks. If you can type proficiently without bottoming out you won't need the o-rings, but if you can't or you're playing a game like osu they are very capable of waking people from several rooms away :D

depends on the office an open style office the sound would carry.

The matias quiet-clicks apparently kind of have a ''o-ring''-like system built into the switches though, so you wouldn't need to worry about it at all. Besides that, browns/reds/blacks are your best bet (browns are best for typing I find), with possible o-rings to shorten the travel distance and also lighten the sound because you technically don't bottom out.

with the razer sale coming up i'm considering splurging on a razer blackwidow chroma since it's 50% off. does anyone have any opinion on the normal version (razer green switches) vs the stealth version (razer orange switches)?

the difference is here http://www.razerzone.com/sg-en/razer-mechanical-switches apparently but i'm not sure how that translates irl.

since both are supposed to have tactile feedback:
read Razer Green - think Cherry MX Blue
read Razer Orange - think Cherry MX Brown

The rest seems to be usual marketing blabla.

Wrong, actually. They're using Kailh switches, and just called them Razer ones. You can see Kailh as a cheaper, ''rip-off'' cherry. They claim to have the same durability, but not too much research has been done as far as I know. People kind of hate the 2014 version of the BW because of that, and I'm very happy with my 2013 one, wouldn't have gotten a 2014 one. You probably won't feel much of a difference though, it just sounds/feels like Razer ''cheaped out'' and made a marketing move out of it, even though it's technically, supposedly a downgrade.

You can compare them to MX blues and MX browns though, just won't be the ''exact same deal''

Oh wow, that's disappointing interersting!
I'm back on my 2013 Blackwidow too. Took the CMStorm QuickfireTK Stealth to office

Thalandros, do you know of a place in the Netherlands (not a web shop) that sells mechanical keyboards?

I've been using a SS 6gv2 with black switches for 2,5 years now. Currently wondering if it would be more comfortable to use brown/red or even blue switches, considering I've never tried them. They all seem to have pros and cons. So the best way to determine which type to buy, would be to try them out.

I recall seeing a Blackwidow once in my local Media Markt, but I don't feel like buying Razer products. Apart from that I've only been able to order a mechanical keyboard online .

In the Mediamarkt in Breda they have brown switches on some boards, but the ''mainstream boards'' will mostly only have brown/blue. CDROMLAND in Breda has keyboards and mice from all kinds of peripheral producers but again, only the ''gaming'' brands. Awesome actual stores I have yet to find. :/ The newer razer boards don't have cherry MX switches, do keep that in mind. (Something very close but not quite it, Kailh switches, look it up).

I'd say your best bet is to try out Media Markt or other stores that are like that. If you can find a hardcore computer shop, that's even better. Very hard though, I know the feeling. I'm about to try out MX-reds to see if they'll dofor my Poker II purchase soon, but I can only really try them out at a friend. You can always buy a switch tester off of WASDkeyboards or CMstorm, but the shipping often makes me turn away from that solution. :/

The harder it becomes, the more you should focus on the basics.

Haha, I would, but I've got my mind set on a Poker II [image loading] at this point. It's so beautiful and it's a completely ''standard'' layout, so most keycap singles/sets will fit. Plan to get a different set for the modifier keys. You should take a look at www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket if you want to sell or trade keyboards, it's pretty active!

Currently I'm using a Blackwidow 2013 and even though it looks pretty damn cool the layout is far from standard, and the keycaps are from cheap (coated) ABS plastic. Also, blues might not be ideal for gaming as you can't rapid-tap as fast as reds and blacks can. It is LOVELY for typing though! That's why im hesitant on reselling this one.

I have a nearly new Steelseries 6gV2 to sell.

Apologies if this is not allowed on TL. If it is, I don't see a thread for it.

Is there a way to use a software to force my keyboard to only recognize at most 2 keys like most 5$ keyboards? Because in a game I play there's a technique that requires instantly going from up arrow to down arrow while holding forward and it doesn't work if I also hold up while pressing down(Which happens 95% of the time and it's super hard getting the timing down). It works on my 8-year-old Acer keyboard every time but it's a very shitty keyboard I don't want to have to use whenever I want to play this game.

Something simple like "if down is pressed, ignore up" would be what I'm looking for.

Maybe Autohotkey. It can get pretty complicated (or just be simple) and i'm not certain of its capabilities

What is the go-to TKL with reasonable build quality yet still cheap? I used to always recommend CM QFR, but now it seems it's been phased out in favor of a much more expensive variant. Doesn't have to be costar, but would be nice to get something <$75 stateside (i.e. not buying some random keycool or noppoo from some random person (who is not qtan)).

Looking for a keyboard to use with my first ever PC set up! So I need some recommendations however

I live in the US
I perfer Cherry MX Reds
Backlit keyboard would be nice but not 100% required

Games I play

Mostly Starcraft 2 competitively (planned)
Casually- LoL, H1Z1, Minecraft. L4D2

Is a Tenkeyless more recommended than a full keyboard? Need information and recommendations please and thanks!

(Also need a mouse, fingertip/claw grip, med/high sensetivity, to be used for SC2 competitively)

A price range would be helpful. Also, TKL or full-size is kinda personal preference, but if you are not going to use the numpad at all, TKL is more compact and better for travelling or packing it to tournament venue. Another thing is whether you want macro keys, but I don't think SC2 need macro keys (?)

Without considering the price, my suggestion is CM Storm Trigger Z for full-size backlit gaming keyboard with macro keys, or Ducky Shine 3 for normal backlit keyboard, or CM Storm QF Rapid-i for TKL backlit. Those are among the more durable keyboards (my first priority, everything else can be reconsidered), although my knowledge regarding TKL keyboards is quite limited since I didn't plan to buy one at all, and I don't like Razer kb :p
