your muscle memory can not only remember the location of keys, it can also remember how to press them.

I prefer the reds, they are not mushy to me, they are great!

Reds are mushy when comparing key types.
mush·y - adjective - soft and pulpy.
They are a softkey pretty much the softest there is, given they have the lightest spring and no tactile bump to signify the key was pressed.
But maybe that's just semantics...

I want to buy one for my Dad for christmas. He does a fair bit of data entry for his work, so I thought a nice mech keyboard could be a decent present.
He lives in a family house so it needs to be something reasonably quiet, perhaps browns with dampeners?
Obviously it doesn't need any special features, so what sorta price might I be looking at?

Plain Jane home stuff, Das Keyboard may be good to look at, it is a bit like an old Cadillac in that they are a bit boat-like but really nice and smooth to type on, they also offer a silenced, mechanical option. The newest version also have some media controls in top right, which may be nice.

The Das keyboard is pretty expensive, and I'm not sure he would get the full use of a keyboard that nice. Obviously he'll need a numpad but is there nothing a little cheaper?

Holy shit I am glad I don't have to shop Amazon.co.uk, what kind of poundage are you looking to drop for the gift?

For lower starting end you would probably want to look into CM Storm Quickfire series (XT for numpad and no nonsense back-lighting) or Rosewill. At least those are the more popular options that I know will be easily available. There are other options out there like Cherry own brand keyboard or Corsair or KUL, some of which are good but I am not sure if it's easy to find. From my own research I find QF XT really worth it for the low price, well built and no extra useless stuff. Go up the price a bit you probably want to check out Filco (really good quality, but lack media keys) or Ducky (similarly well built, some model with fancy back-lighting). I went by referring to price from here and here so check them out first before considering anything

As for switch type, mechanical keyboards are going to be noisy no matter what (I am using brown switch and I makes more noise than my blue switch mate because of my tendency to jam the key all the way down) What is important is different switch type is going to feel different, so far my own experience (bringing many friends to shop to buy kb) shows that brown and blue are easier for beginner to get used to, but then again it's all subjective. Other than switch type, dampening O-ring will be your good friend.

I kinda feel liek doing free ad for going around and recommending CM Storm QF XT but that one is really good value. Unless you are looking for something specific (since this is a gift for your dad) like min price/value, certain design factor, back-lighting, extra features, etc. XT is worth a shot

Maybe in the pic it is, but you wont end up with that.

It's the same one I ordered. Let me check the number 3 key for a £ sign.

Yep it's there.

Contact them and ask

yeah, regarding layout you probably have to call them or go to physical store and check it out. I am not familiar with what is available in UK so sorry can't help much. But iirc they do have different layout available while the picture they put on the website is always the same

Always best with forums! Especially where 80 odd quid is on the line.

But honestly, I ordered this brand/model from CCL. It was a UK variant.

Which key flavour is it coming in? I'm going to bet 2,500 of my esports dollars, and guess red or brown.

whoops, totally forgot about this thread. I went with blacks

I was gonna go with reds, but WASD was out so I went "eh what the hell", and it turns out i LOVE the blacks, they feel so smooth. Definitely my favorite switch I've used so far!

So TL, does anyone have knowledge of the existence of a nordic based, or simply an EU based reatiler of Blank white cherry keycap sets?

I'd really like to avoid stomaching not only cross continent shipping costs as well as taxes if possible.

Alternatively if I've missed it, a keyboard with following characteristics so I might compare total costs:

TKL
MX Reds
Backlit
Blank white keycaps

Sadly I want it to be a full set of blank whites,

Thanks though, I'll keep the site in mind if they randomly happen to restock.

After somebody was faster than me and I missed out the CM Storm QuickFire TK deal, I bought myself a Cherry MX-Board 3.0 with MX Brown switches.
Dear lord, how I missed that sound and feeling when typing...didnt have that since the Apple II and our first Pentium90.

It is slightly smaller than my Tt esport Challenger but it feels very good and after I get used to it, I will have a blast writing and gaming with it...so happy!

Hmm. One option is wasdkeyboards. The keysets are customizable and run nordic layout. TKL is ~$50. However, I believe they are based in US and the shipping to Europe is roughly $15. Keys are ABS.
