I've just gotten my apartment and dont have internet for about 14 more days. (its horrible, i know)
So my basic question is how much internet do I need to play Sc2 multiplayer without massive delay?
Because i have this Mobile broadband but my download and upload are terrible. Started playing the singleplayer but only in offline mode couse dont want to pay for the internet without actually using it.
thx for any replies

You need very little although what you want to look for is connection stability. Do you know the speeds of your mobile broadband?
|
Just use speedtest using the server in paris(I'm not sure but it think everything blizzwise for europe is located there) and check the ping. but anything above 1mbs upload and 5 mbs download should be fine. I can play with no issues(except hardware lag) with .7 mbs up and 6 mbs down. And of course as long as it's stable you're safe
|
Well im at work now, so cant test the speeds. but im pretty sure i dont have 1 mb upload. Maybe like 0.2/1.. Would that work?

I used one of those mobile thingies for a while (over here it's basicly the same as the stuff that cellphones use, had like 1mbit download or something similar).
Worked well in 1n1/2n2 (no lag at all), 3n3/4n4 was too laggy. And don't even think about playing stuff like CS/LoL/EvE Online, won't work. =P

Thank you r.Evo Think i got the answer I wanted!

0.2 mbit/s upload is fine for playing SC2. The question is not "how much" internet is required, but rather what is the latency (delay). SC2 doesn't require much bandwidth - but decent gameplay is dependent on latency. Mobile broadband are bound to be slower than ie. ADSL. But for a temporary solution, just go for it
Btw. are you sure you pay by the minute? Just wondering as we in Denmark mostly have flat rate subscriptions on mobile broadband.

Yes, latency will be a far bigger problem than raw bandwidth. Mobile connections have ok bandwidth but a horrible delay, so depending on how close you are to the next node in the mobile network, it can range from "almost playable" to "am i connected to SEA bnet?"

I have 1 MB download, 0.2 MB upload, and 100 ping to closest Speedtest server. That's a terrible connection by most standards but I haven't noticed any any lag on Starcraft at all. The only thing that gets me is when my router overheats and I'm dropped offline but that's my Dad's fault for always putting stuff on top of it.

@Nightmare1795 With a router I assume you are on a fixed line, right? The OP is not on a fixed line, but asking if mobile broadband is good enough to play SC2 on. Unless he knows about and can differentiate numbers like upload/download and latency, your info may mislead him. Just saying.
|
Ehh, no. He asked "how much internet do I need to play Sc2 multiplayer without massive delay?". The answer is 1 mb/s (or 2 mb/s to play it safe). I assume he asked because he is getting a fixed line and was wondering how much bandwidth he needs. OP was a little confusing though..

I have 100kb/s down/up and it works fine. Only lag I ever get in games either because of my bad pc or opponents bad connection. Do some research about your country's ISP's and focus on stabilty.

Read the OP again. He's asking if he can do with just the mobile solution "couse dont want to pay for the internet without actually using it".
Also please show documentation for the "1 mb/s (or 2 mb/s to play it safe)". Do please compare to Bunn's post above this and comment.

I have about 200-300 kb/s connection speed and it works completely fine for me. I suppose there is a delay but it's so small I barely even notice it.
|
Sorry if the OP was confusing, Im not english as you all might understand :p Basic points.
- I get better internet the 18th of August. - I borrowed my dads mobile broadband with maybe 22-50 kb download speed.. (Ice.net its called.) - Could I play sc2 with that crappy speed? Just asking because im really bored of the singleplayer but dont want to throw away a game because of the bad internet. cant wait until 40/10 :D

Try it in a custom game, if you really don't want to lose ladder points. I fear it will be unplayable though
|
I play fine with 0.60mb down and 0.20mb up, so suck it. of course, I can barely watch streams on more than 240p though...
|
I have a card with verizon and it sucks. Unless you're right near a tower then it won't be great. I am not positive of my upload download speeds(cba) but I can watch 360p streams as a guage.
I've worked hard to make my openings crisp vs AI then when I take them online, it's hard because a probe will show building a second later than it should(then because it didn't register as quick, you keep hitting "e" for example then you end up building 3 extra probes).
It's doable though. You just have to expect latency. Since you're masters I'd play a custom game or two and then you can decide if the latency is going to mess you're timing up or not.
