Something electronic already burned up, so that's a pretty bad starting point. The smell of burned electronics is very distinct.

I have turned it on briefly since then with my fire extinguisher on hand. Basically I was able to turn on the PC and get into windows with both GPUs removed once, but after that it would just go into a restart loop during the POST sequence (never any video, the POST code it reached seemed to vary). I've tested one GPU in another system and it's fine.

I'm not sure how fast a CPU heats up with a non-moving water loop. I would expect it to get a little further than that before reaching auto-shutoff levels. And again, it's a CLC so it's only cooling the CPU. I don't know if I have any other heatsinks on hand. Not sure if I kept the stock one anywhere.

My only question is, what the hell is "^@"?

I get the same nonsense in the kernel log as well at the time of the crash.

It makes it a bit difficult to determine what is making me crash

Swap out the PSU and get your CPU cooling situation sorted. You would be quite surprised how hot a CPU gets without effective cooling. Ive gotten a laptop with a broken fan to go from 40 degrees celcius to 110+ in a matter of seconds under a stress test (for my own amusement.)

I know it heats very fast under stress. My point is I don't know (and can't find) how fast it heats under idle (POST).

I haven't really done anything with it lately. I haven't decided how much effort I feel like expending to salvage it.

if a video game says VR is required to play a game is it possible to play it at all without VR or will it literally not work? Obviously the game is not designed to be run without out it and would probably have problems. I'm wondering about console games btw if that matters at all.

Last few times when I had to clone/copy a HDD to HDD/SSD I used Macrium Reflect in free version and it did the job.

Root cause was not nvidia drivers (despite there being a metric fuck-tonne of complains about nvidia drivers for ubuntu)

Root cause was the SteelSeries 6gv2 keyboard plugged into a USB3.0 port. At least, that is the last thing that gets logged on freeze.

I don't know how a keyboard can possibly freeze the gnome desktop environment, but swapping for a regular keyboard has resulted in no problems for a while now.

Yeah, the Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu are a special level of pain in the ass. I don't really get why basic things are so difficult with them (fan control, power control, etc.)

This kind of stuff is really silly, some decently trusted manufacturers doing stupid stuff with hardware that causes all sorts of issues like these which sometimes take people years to diagnose because it doesn't make any sense that plugging in a specific mech keyboard into ps/2 would mess up your frametime stability in a game, mouse movement, audio etcetc. I haven't seen it actually crashing an OS before, just causing issues of varying proportion with all sorts of OS functions.

I don't even know how it can screw with both windows and linux via usb and ps/2, it must be some wide reaching hardware problem in the keyboard.

I've had a few similar issues such that i carefully vet anything that i buy now, especially stuff like mech boards which are significant investments and often live for huge periods of time (like 20,000++ usage hours)

Ever since I got a UPS and plugged it into the wall, my speakers make an annoying high pitched whine when the graphics card is in use (probably just anytime larger amounts of power are being drawn). The only thing that seems to help is turning down the max volume on the speakers themselves, but that's pretty annoying since it ends up being quieter than I'd like. I've tried a few outlets, but it doesn't seem to matter which outlet the ups or speakers are plugged into (or if the speakers are plugged into the UPS).

Is there something else I can try to help with this?

I don't know enough about the specifics to help much but it sounds like some kind of electrical noise. Does moving the UPS itself or the speaker wires change the sound?

I reinstalled my Windows (10) and my sound got all weird. It's just strange first while listening to metal, but the more layered stuff I listen to, the more apparent it becomes that something is not right. My best example is a gachimuchi song, I'm not even kidding.

The way this "song" should sound is that Katy Perry is in the foreground, while the weird gachistuff should come from behind (heh). But now, whenever the gachi stuff (speaking, added noises) comes in they are extremely loud and prominent, while Katy Perry is barely heard in the background.

Bass is also much louder in songs. It's like the low and high ends are more prominent than the middle stuff.

In games, sounds like fists or weapons clashing, spells being used are 10 times louder as well.

I tried deleting my driver a million times, but didn't help. I have a Dolby Audio EQ, but it doesn't make much difference if I turn it off or on. All EQ bars are in the middle.

I have Realtek HD Audio (SST), win 10 and an Acer aspire 7, but as I said, it was fine before the reinstall, though I did use a new version of Windows.

Is anyone here a frequent user of Debian/Kali? My Kali OS keeps rebooting after 15 minutes of being idle and it just started doing it last week. I posted this question on the Kali troubleshooting forums (https://forums.kali.org/showthread.php?42125-Kali-automatically-logging-out-rebooting-when-idle) but haven't received a reply yet. Just curious if anyone knew where I should look to see what the problem could be
