So... hopefully I can get some help here, because hours of googling didn't help much (and also except turning it on and playing some games - I am not that great with computers in the first place).

For the past 4-5 months I am having massive FPS problems on my laptop (Acer Aspire Nitro Gaming laptop, about 2 years old now - I'm not at home right now, but I can post specs later on if that helps).
At the moment I am mostly playing dota 2 with some SC:BW for a night a week.
Problem is that I have "good" days and "bad" days. On a good day I can have "solid" (lol) 50FPS, which is playable. However, lately the "bad" days are getting more and more, and on those I have around 15-20FPS , which is completely unplayable. I always have nothing whatsoever running except the game I'm playing (+ possibly teamspeak, if I have a team there) and it still alternates between good and bad days...but it's about 80% bad days now.
I'm already playing on the lowest possible settings, in real fullscreen mode, steam overlay turned off, and a couple of extra console and launch commands I found. Nothing at all seems to be helping.
What can I do to find the problem here?
Or alternatively, how can I increase my FPS to at least get to 25-30, which is where it starts to be playable?
Please help

In my opinion, you should run a malware scan (Like Malwarebytes) and a registry cleaner (like CCleaner, free version does all you need), and see if that improves performance.
Also, are you certain no weird stuff is running in the background? (Not just you not starting things, but maybe checking in the task manager if stuff is running and hogging resources)
Another step you might want to take if that doesn't help is run some sort of hardware monitor (Like HWMonitor) while doing the things you have problems with, to see what is the problem (Is the CPU at 100%? The RAM? The GPU? Is something getting really hot?
The nuclear option is always a format and clean windows reinstallation, that tends to solve all problems that are not hardware related (Which slowing down usually is not), but it is a shitload of work.

Do you think the bad days might be related to higher room temperatures with summer approaching? Did you check what the temperature sensors are reporting while gaming? Are the fan speeds okay? Did you ever clean dust, for example by using a can of compressed air near the vents?

I haven't tried that yet.
Some of the bad days, the fan does get quite loud and seems to be working hard - that's random though, and I live in the UK, so ain't now warm weather here
And also on most of the bad days the fan stays nice and quiet and the laptop isn't getting hot at all really.
I'm a bit desparate, so I will try the bits the poster before suggested this weekend - and if that doesn't help at all, I suppose I will try your suggestions.

Other than what Simberto suggested, you may check what the temperatures are with a simple program like HWMonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
download the portable version and see how hot your CPU/GPU is. Running some antyvirus/antimalware is a thing to do surely, checking for any unnecessary background services and applications. Also checking if HDD isn't dying could also be a good idea, but first to the aforementioned stuff.

If it is a 2 year laptop the most likely culprit would be dust build up. For me, in the the last week in the UK went from 12 C to 30 C. See if you can open up your laptop and clean it with compressed gas. This is cheap and depending on how the case is built, (some laptops can't be opened up at all) less fuss.

Could be your internet not being able to "service" that quality. 30fps vs 60 fps is quite big bandwidth difference, which could explain why you can watch 720p@30fps (or less) without problem, but are struggling with same resolution but at 60fps.

I am watching sc2 right now (WCS Regional Challengers). playback rate:
720p =~1900 kbps and 720p60 =~2400 kbps
I can watch netflix flawlessy (HD quality needs 4000kbps).
edit: using a repeater solved this problem. I can watch whatever I want.

Something weird is going on with my directX 9 (probably). (At least that is what i think it is)
A bunch of games (Orcs Must Die 1, Legend of Grimrock) suddenly no longer start with varying error messages, that all say something about direct X or direct3D. Weirdly enough, they only do that about half the times i launch my PC, while for the rest of the time they work without problems.
I have tried reinstalling the June 2010 Version of DirectX 9. That didn't change anything. Reinstalled graphics drivers, didn't help either. Ran CCleaner and Malwarebytes for good measures, didn't help either. Restarting my PC is a short-time fix about half the time, but i'd like to not have to do that all the time.

I just had something weird happen...
Googled (in chrome) the title of a book (Nand to Tetris), went to the top result (nand2tetris.org) and got redirected to some adware looking address (quickly closed out but viewing history, one of the domains was prize2deal which is some adware BS).
The strange thing is that 1) the website is working fine, repeat visits do not trigger another redirect.
2) Not getting redirected anywhere else.
(I vaguely recall having a weird redirect or popup or something last month, or possibly the month before that,, but finding nothing when scanning)
It seems really, really weird for a malware program to cause redirects once every 2 months, but I don't know why this redirect would have happened otherwise...? I'm currently running a bunch of scans, but has anyone experienced anything like this?
I haven't really installed anything weird in recent times, just various open source tools mostly (git bash, some LaTeX related programs - MikTeX and TeXstudio, partypoker... i.e really nothing weird). Weirding me out as I really try to avoid using this computer for anything sketchy.
Could it just be that their site is compromised but it only redirects once? EDIT: Seems unlikely since doesn't redirect on my old piece of shit laptop.

I was thinking this could be based on a cookie, but then your other laptop would be redirected at first visit. IP based? Doubtful.
It actually seems quite odd for anything to put random redirect so rarely, maybe it's nothing to worry about - but scanning is always better than being sorry later.
Rkill, Malwarebytes Antimalware, Hitman Pro, Adwcleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, sometimes UniversalVirusKiller for some other related things. And Emergency Kit and Complete Internet Repair (comintrep).
These are the ones I use at work when dealing with viruses/malware. Most is free to use at least for some time (except some functionality of UVK) and each is focusing on a bit different threats, so running them all gives you an almost complete scan. Not sure what AV software you're running, but I believe I don't have to tell you to run that as well. 
You could also try to log the traffic and whenever a popup or redirect happens to filter the log to check what and where was going.

How would I go about logging the traffic? And yeah, it's really bizarre for it to happen so extremely rarely... I checked back through my history and found 2 other weird instances - one in may, one in april, though not the same URL as this time. I remember the april one tho, some dingit.tv popup and some other esports sounding (but bogus seeming) websites that I hadnt visited...
.. which reminds me that april is around the time I re-installed Brood war and stuff, I don't think I installed the launcher for Fish server but that one supposedly has adware in it I think.... Need to investigate that tomorrow I guess.

Wonder if this could be it -.- I guess at least I know it isn't dangerous, but that's annoying if so.
Though none of the scans have found anything. Deleted some component of ICCUP launcher as a PUP which is whatever, but nothing else so far. And none of the popups were korean which I guess you'd have expected... and I haven't played on fish.

Eh, that just sounds like one of those aggressive ads that try to redirect you to another site. I see it happen from time to time when one slips through my various adblockers and popup blockers.

So either you have some nidicolous rare and ultra specific something-ware, maybe even specifically targeted at you or... well, it was nothing. I very much doubt it's something sitting super deep in the OS or even HDD/GPU (yes, there's at least one GPU virus lol) as the way it works doesn't make much sense. Would just keep an eye out for any possible future popups.
As for logging traffic - even Windows have some tools included, but there's tons of software that can do what you need. TCPView for example is portable, lightweight and ultra simple little app. Not my field so can't recommend anything specific, but google surely will help you. I mean, looking at the list of software you typed before I assume you probably have solid understanding of the biggest rule in IT: "google it, till you find it"
Edit: and yeah, Craton is also right, this can happen too sometimes. Damn you Craton for being faster!

You're probably right, I just get extremely paranoid when this stuff happens even though I don't think I've had anything worse than mild adware in the past 15 years.
There are 0 ads on nand2tetris.org tho. But yeah, I'll just keep an eye on things. I'm getting a new computer this month or the next anyway ^^

Anyone know how much of a pain it is to replace the hard drive in a typical Lenovo laptop?
I'm looking to buy a laptop and want to stick an SSD into it, but the company is charging about $1/gig of the SSD, whereas I can buy an SSD in a hardware store for $0.5/gig. Will end up saving me $250-$500 if it's doable.

Depends on the model of said laptops. Even within the same brand, there are models that have easy access to HDD bay and ones that are awful where you need to split whole laptop down to the motherboard to change the drive.
If you could tell which model you have/are interested in, I could find more precise info.
