I like the second method you described best if I were attempt to install possibly nefast updates, however I've been somewhat tramautized by the trouble I went through a few months back when I got my new SSD and tried to install windows on it, things like AHCI, disk partitions and BSODs drove me half nuts. I finally got around to getting it to work but not after at least a days worth of troubleshooting it. :p

I would be interested to try to install the windows update if only to bench and get a proper x264 bench but atm I don't feel like going that far out just for a single bench (which is a stress test anyway).

good stuff though

If you have an SSD, you really should try finding a backup program that you like. With an SSD, you can schedule backups of your whole SSD to run in the background with the target being some place on your HDD. You won't notice it making the copy, can still use the PC like normal. This means you can schedule it to run quite often and will have the peace of mind that you'll be able to restore the contents of your whole SSD to a not-that-old state whenever something goes wrong.

The SSD is much smaller than a typical HDD, so the room the backup needs is probably no problem. It's not quite correct to do a backup onto a HDD that's installed internally in the same PC that the SSD is in, but it still works fine for trying to avoid having to reinstall Windows if some mistake or accident happens.

I don't know which program to suggest that's free and good. I've seen people recommend "Macrium Reflect Free".

I restored system image backups of my SSD a whole bunch of times and it nearly always went well. The last time I did it, some sort of errors showed up in the Windows Event Viewer that I couldn't fix. This was the only problem I ever ran into. I'm blaming the backup program running "online", which means it makes a copy while Windows is running and programs are open etc. Something in the Registry might have broken because of this.

Well I was too lazy to back anything up so I just installed. As I said before I was fine reinstalling windows if necessary. Anyway, now I have AVX, I think after having installed Windows Service Pack 1.

The results are actually great improved. I thank you both for pointing this out to me:

That's a 46% speed increase lol, i don't think that could have been purely avx+avx2.. maybe? It seems really drastic. Surely that had a significant affect on your temperatures, and also curious what clock speeds it ran at

that puts my 4.5+ht ~57.6% faster, but i could probably squeeze out a little more

It ran at 3.6 GHz and the temperatures were mostly the same, the core voltage being the same afaik. I guess AVX is just that much more efficient? You learn stuff every day, I guess.

You must have messed up the first benchmark somehow, i'm thinking :D

That's also what I thought, but having thought about it I'm not sure what I could have messed up. I even closed all unnecessary programs. weird

Strange request here - but - I'm looking for a fake computer virus my dad showed me about eight or ten years ago. I remember it was a yellow smiley-face icon, and when you ran it, it asked if you wanted to delete system 32 or something, and then forced you to click yes. It then ran a fake command window and at the end, it was an advertisement for some sort of antivirus software... kind of like a "what if this had been real?" situation. Those are all the details I can remember, and again, it was a while back. I just thought I'd check and see if anyone happened to know off the top of their head what it might have been.

I need some help kinda badly, and the sooner the better.

We had to send this comp out to get fixed, turns out the harddrive was fried (overheated - has been replaced) and the CD-ROM was broken somehow (just gonna use an External one when I decided to buy one). I live with my GF and her father is always on here (I just use my laptop because hes a fucking pig), and he looks at a ton of porn and stuff. He had free reign of the comp for about 2 months, then went on "vacation" to China and will be gone again for a few months. Today is the first day I've been on it since we got it back months ago, and it's just terrible.

Situation aside, I need to do things to get it back up and running, INCLUDING downloading virus protection and all that. Here is what I have downloaded so far:

(Not sure how you guys are on links or advertisements so the stuff is in spoiler tags)
+ Show Spoiler +
adblock plus (for Firefox)
SuperAntispyware (free)
Malwarebytes (free)
ACG Antivirus (free)

I'm currently running the scans for the 3 of them... It seems like Adblock plus is not working properly as I am still getting some popups (not NEARLY as many). Is there ANYTHING ELSE I should download/run?

I plan on doing a defrag after I'm done all this. Not sure what else to do, I'm bad with this stuff. I REALLY appreciate the help here, regardless of the bad things people say about you all. Harhar.

Hey guys I have a mac wireless keyboard (the ones without the numpad) and for some reason, every time i hold 'command' to try and use a shortcut, it loses connection. It never used to do that. eveyrthing else is functioning fine. i've tried re-pairing the keyboard and mac, and i've put in new batteries. It's just the command key that disconnects my keyboard for some reason. really annoying since i like using command tab and command + T for new tabs. Any suggestions?

@VashTS:

You can make multiple user accounts. Give the guy a normal user account that does not have Administrator rights. I think that should work perfect to keep the machine safe, or at least keep all other user accounts clean.

For AdBlock, did you look at the filters it uses? I don't know if it even installs a filter by default, so you might have to set that up manually.

EDIT:

If you make an additional user account that's not an Admin, you need to log into that account and check if everything is working. I mean you need to set up Google Chrome or whatever browser you want to use, etc. This is important because the user account will not be able to install programs. Trying that will pop up a password prompt for the password of one of the Admin accounts on the machine.

So to not have to give out the password, you will need to already have every program that will be needed installed for that account and you need to check that all those programs work so that there will be no problems.

@ropid:

Yeah, I know, he had one. I'm guessing it was not there after the new HD got put in at the shop. *sigh*

For AdBlock, I literally did nothing but install it. I just checked it and checked "Disable Everywhere" so lets see how that goes. I'm still getting redirected when I cick a lot of things, though I'm guessing that's because of the mountains of viruses and trojans I'm seeing from my scans.

Is there anything else I should download to cover anything I may have missed, or additional steps I may need to take to clean this computer?

AdBlock uses "filters" and you have to add some manually, I think. The various available filters are here for the original ABP:

https://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

That "subscribe" link on the lists on that page works for the Firefox ABP. I don't know about the Chrome one. I've seen there's an alternative Adblock addon for Chrome that has nice options for adding filters built into its options menu. You should check the options of whatever addon you are using.

Reinstalling Windows works best to get it clean if it's massively infected with stuff.

Windows 8 has some sort of reset function built in that will do the same as a reinstallation but without needing an installation disc.

@Ropid:

Hmm, I've never had to do that on my laptop to avoid any problems. I'll take a look though, thanks.

I suppose that means that the things I downloaded are sufficient enough to fix my PC?

Yes, there's not much more that you can do. If the programs you are using can't remove something, you could try to search for some more alternatives to Malwarebytes and also try those. Worst case you have to manually remove things by searching for a guide about removing the particular malware that's being stubborn.

Alright, thanks a lot.

There's another issue. When I click to do what seems like everything, occasionally a tab will open automatically to some random page. How do I stop this?

The thing doing that might have installed itself as a browser addon/extension or as a plugin?

I wouldn't worry with any of that stuff and just erase the computer and reinstall windows. I never get viruses but whenever my computer starts to feel cluttered I just back up any important documents and pictures and reinstall OSX. I reinstall about 2-3 times a year at least. It's refreshing, kind of like spring cleaning your house!

I was so close to giving that advice too. I just love reinstalling windows, haven't done so in a while though. Especially since reinstalling windows also means reinstalling important updates.

E: still though, there are more elegant solutions than being a brute and just re-installing. that's why i didn't post. :p
