Hey-
I'll keep this short and sweet. I'm looking into getting a new keyboard as my Tarantula I bought off a friend seems to be dying. I know the Blackwidow is a great choice, but I'm wondering if the Lycosa still has the same issues I've read about while researching different keyboards, i.e. keys stopping functioning, touchpad going crazy, etc. I read somewhere that this is a software issue, so I'm also wondering if anyone has any more information on that.
Thanks very much, Narwhal

Yes there's still some trouble if you use their software that comes with it.
|
Damn, that's frustrating. Is the touchpad affected as well as the macro keys?
|
Touchpad works without the software.
|
Yes it is very bad. After buying this keyboard and gotten no help from the gentlemen down at razer to solve the problem, I can tell you im never buying razer again.
|
its the keyboard i use, the software is the problem so dont use it and the only problem it has is itunes or whatever keeps opening. however if you dont use the program that doesnt happen and you can still use the touchpad its a good keyboard not the best but its ok

Why would you want to know information about the Lycosa when the Black Widow destroys it in performance?
Get the black widow.
-Owner of a Black Widow, A Lycosa with the cord cut, and a refurbished Lycosa that they gave me for replacement.

i used my brothers Lycosa... he likes it... i enjoyed it.. but went with the bw..
we both agree that the bw is the one to get.
|
Thanks guys. Problem with the blackwidow is that the backlit version is almost $60 more, but I guess I'll start saving.

Not true, their mousepads are perfectly fine. They can make a hell of a flat piece of plastic.

Save the money, you don't need backlighting.

I had a Lycosa then I bought a filco majestouch. Honeslty, Lycosa feels worse than dell cheap keyboards when you get used to a mechanical. Don't waste money on it. Get a filco, steelseries g6v2 or something with cherry switches. Look for the mechanical keyboard threads here. Don't get razer, it is a waste of money and time.

I've had a Lycosa for about 2 years, been using the razer program that came with it and had no problem.
Oh and I like that its pretty easy to clean compared to some keyboards

I just switched to a Razer Black Widow. I like it a lot. Despite their generally low quality items, this seems to pull it off.
Sorry, but I've had a diamondback 3G, lycosa and megalodon from Razer. Mouse died after only 1½ year, keyboard died a little earlier, so I had it sent back just to find out the replaced keyboard were suffering from similar malfunctions, and I had a crazy amount of trouble with the headset until a proper driver hotfix came - 4-5 months later.
I gotta be honest - You'll probably need a bunch of patience, if you want Razer gear, but they seem to have learned from all those problem.
Black Widow is problemfree so far.
I just re-read your post and it was more focused on the Lycosa, so I'll keep it short;
At least they remade the Lycosa-box since the last 2 years, but I sold the new (third) Lycosa I received, and I told him, that if he encountered any issues he should call me.
No issues so far. Third month and counting. So I believe they've fixed the issue.

Get something with cherry switches. The Blackwidow is marketed as a "gaming keyboard" but doesn't even have N-Key rollover.

Thanks very much, Narwhal I've had a Lycosa since it came out and I've had no issues at all with anything. Very awesome keyboard, especially if you like the flat key style and the finish of the keys.

I´ve had Lycosa for a month now and it´s working just fine. Only problem is that touchpad makes my windows media player go crazy sometimes, like opens it without reason and changes song every 10 seconds but that happens like once in a week.

Welcome to the software hell. Uninstall WMP or the Razer software. One of em has to go, in my experience. Or rename WMP.exe. Mind you, that folder is pretty hard to mess with.

Got a lycosa too. Good keyboard with nice finishings. I don't have any problems with it so far since i acquired it about 2 weeks ago; If anything should come up, i'll let you know :D

Unfortunately, early defects masked bad software. If unplugging and replugging fixes it, it's probably not a hardware issue, and a lot of people are able to fix it that way.

I like my Lycosa, no complaints. Don't get the mirror version. Key's aren't as nice, and every spec of dust shows up on it.

Mirror version doesn't have a coating on the keys that come off. And the preference on the keys is kind of subjective.

Actually, N-Key rollover isn't necessary for a game like SC2, and the Blackwidow uses Cherry Switches (blues). For a cheap mechanical keyboard, I would definitely go with the Blackwidow. There are definitely problems with it (why the HELL would they ever think that the function key placement was a good idea?) but for $60-70 (I've seen it for $50!), I would get it over the cheap Adesso and Siig crap mechanical keyboards. Even for a backlit keyboard, the $100-$120 Ultimate version is much cheaper than the Deck keyboards, and the Deck keyboards don't even have that ergonomic curvature in the keys.
And to be fair, there is no such thing as a "gaming keyboard." None of the older rubber membrane "gaming keyboards" had NKRO.

Owner of blackwidow, can vouch for it's quality. it's heavy.
something to keep in mind; your typing style and habits will be affected. It took me a long time to adjust from a 5$ membrane keyboard.
the main thing is the 'click' is above the point of actuation, and both points are above bottoming out. with any membrane keyboard, the point of actuation is bottom, which is also the click.
this ends up screwing your timing up (if you're like me and register in your mind a noise as a press)

If your more into competitive gaming and want a decent keyboard I would suggest the steelseries 6gv2. It might seems expensive and not as flashy but it will last you 2ce as long as any razer and feels amazing. The BW is ehhh. Im not a fan of macro keys on a competitive keyboard and tbh it seems really gimmiky.
If you're set on something abit more flashy then a steelseries the TT series has some nice ones that are a mix between really good quality and pretty good looking. I forget what its called but my buddy has the one that whitera uses and it feels very nice and also looks amazing.

Keep your 60 dollars, I looked everywhere for a backlit keyboard and I ended up throwing it away, the light gets so annoying. Since you are a starcraft player I assume you dont look at the keyboard when you type right? back lighting would be pretty useless.

Wait... people still use WMP? just use a different program for your music plenty that will be easier to use and better in comparison to WMP.

Yeah, Lycosa is terrible - but I haven't had a single problem with the BlackWidow.

Well, some people let it install, and that's what kills you with the Lycosa software for that particular bug, which can happen even if the software is set to use iTunes, which is one of the reasons I have trouble believing it's a hardware problem... a hardware issue doesn't tell the software to ignore it's settings.

I've had my lycosa for a year and a half and it works perfectly. The only minor problem I've had is the black paint started rubbing off the keys I use for macroing and wasd (i use the mirror version)
|
Just got the blackwidow. Quite the excellent keyboard for its price.
DOn't get hte backlighting, there isn't a reason for 60 bucks.
I've typed on a Lycosa before, and even just in terms of typing the Blackwidow is Hugely better ;DD
|
I've had a Lycosa since early January. Have yet to have a problem with it.
|
Had my lycosa for almost a year now, and have experienced no problems so far. I guess I may be one of the lucky ones....
|
I really dont recommend Lycosa. There seems to be so much problems with that. BW is much better choice IMO, its newer, mechanical, doesnt seem to have that much problems etc.
|
"Still" bad? I do not think they ever updated it for months or even years lol. I would not recommend getting one, as it is not horrible, but just not worth the price at all.
