Hey guys,
I'm having a problem with the aspect ratio of my Macbook Pro with Broodwar. When I launch Broodwar, the screen has black bars on the sides and doesn't go fullscreen. Changing the resolution of the Mac didn't help so far as it seems..
Do all Macbook Pro Users encounter this problem? It's the mid 2010 model with 2,4 ghz.
Is there any program for mac that lets you chose the resolution for every program your running, or something like a compatiblity mode in windows?
Help would be greatly appreciated!!

get windows, problem solved. I tried playing brood war on a mac once and it failed miserably and I spent 4 hours searching through stuff online and everything and gave up. Thankfully I don't own a mac anymore.

i don't use mac but i have heard of these emulators that you can use called wine? idk, i think bw is just a windows application so that could be your problem. i'm not sure but this is just a thought
|
Do you have the patches? When I installed BW on my Mac it wouldn't go full screen until I patched the installation. After I patched it, everything worked fine.
|
Hey, yes I patched it...still the same problem though
"Wine" looks extremly complicated...isn't there an easier way to manually adjust the aspect ratio? Setting the resolution to 640x480 before launching Broodwar doesn't help either.
Can't believe nobody is playing Broodwar with a MacBook!
|
You're playing a 4:3 game on a 16 screen. Broodwar doesn't always account for that. Maybe there's something in your graphics options to change it, but if not I don't think there's anything you can do about it.
|
i'm sure you could find an emulator that works for you, but i don't know of one.
|
My friend runs a program called bootcamp or something on her mac that allows her to play. It's like a windows emulation for mac. Hope this hopes.
|
yeah, I guess BootCamp is the only solution then...you can't go deeper in the graphics settings on Mac OSX as it seems.
Thanks guys!

I have an older macbook pro and I never had a problem running broodwar. The resolution worked normally etc. Of course there are issues playing on iccup and all that, but as far as the game goes, it works fine. Btw, bootcamp isn't an emulator, it's just a program built into the os that helps you set up a partition on your hard drive and install windows. You have to have a full copy of windows to do that.

Actually, I've run into the same problem with on of our windows 7 desktop computers- maybe it's the wide screen? I've never figured it out.

In windows, you can fix it by going to the nvidia control panel and checking off the option for forced aspect ratio. Haven't found a way to fix that on OSX. I wouldn't play BW on OSX though, the mouse acceleration is really annoying, and of course, no iccup launcher.

i play broodwar on my regular macbook just fine
|
I played from a macbook (not pro but doesn't matter). I had no problems playing, I installed the game with the online installer, patched it with the osx patch, and had no problems whatsoever.
|
I play BW on my MBP just fine, didn't have any problems once everything was all patched. Not sure why you're having problems with it
|
Hey, thanks for all your replies You're really helping me out!!
I'll try to download the anthrology, so far I had my original copy installed. Your replies gave me some hope...maybe it does the trick.
|
Anthropology works perfect on the newest 15 inch macbook pro for me. I do remember SC: BW having problems on my 13 inch macbook though, it may be Anthropology is needed.

Thanks alot holynorth! 40 minutes left, getting excited

wtf...it wants me to enter a cd-key with 26 numbers...but mine only has 13 and worked for the original mac version what is wrong here? any ideas?
|
Check your battle net account and click on Starcraft anthology. Your CD key is located there
|
Ah there Thanks man
I wonder why the key is different than the one I entered from the CD...? Works now

On a related note, I'm at a bit of a crossroad right now. I want to play BW on a 64bit MBP without the stupid mouse acceleration and ICCUP launcher. This means windows of course, but W7 crashes BW, XP 64bit isn't supported by bootcamp, and Vista sucks. Any ideas?
|
Just use 32 bit XP. You'll lose like 700MB of RAM nothing special and it is BW we're talking about. These systems are extreme overkill for that game.

1. DDhack on windows 7 2. Vista

Problem is still there...but I think I got the solution. I have the MBP antiglare model which is a widescreen...maybe the game just won't fit in there..
|
I have to say I have brood war running on a 23" 1080p widescreen LG monitor so I really don't know why you are having so much trouble with it. To be honest though I really can't play on such a screen because my mouse goes flying off the screen with the slightest movement.
|
BW is a 4:3 game. You have widescreen monitor. It's going to have black bars, or it's going to be stretched horizontally, pick one. I have no idea what everybody else in this thread is talking about. It has nothing to do with the fact that you have a Mac, or an antiglare screen. The black bars will be present on any laptop made in the past five years, with any OS.
Are the people who say they have "fixed" this problem, or "don't have" this problem serious? I mean, it's not possible to "fix" this problem.
|
Yeah you're right, though I'd like a scretched out version more than the one with black bars
I wish you could make graphic settings adjustments on the mid 2010 macbook pro model so you could change the aspect ratio..can't find anything like that though
|
I know people who play BW on a macbook pro and they don't use wine or bootcamp...
Maybe you need to change your graphics properties?
|
but where there's no option for it in the system settings!

Hmm, for some reason, DDHack really slows down the game, even on my computer with good specs.
