I have another question. I'm not sure if the motherboard I chose has wi-fi. On the site it says:

"- Atheros® PCIEx1 LAN AR8152
- Speed: 10/100 Ethernet
- Supports Wake-On-LAN
- Supports PXE"

so I think it does not have wifi integrated but I'm not sure :/

Asrock H61M-VS and the majority (basically all except for select high-end and ITX boards) do not have built in wireless.

The "monitor" will look terrible, being designed for televison, and considering it's a 720p 19", you can get a 24" FHD TN panel for ~$120-140. If you don't have a TV already, then this is an expensive option for such a small screen.

Alright so I am trying to build a computer to order tonight but am running into some roadblocks so far I have. The parts have to be from http://www.ncix.ca/ as I am getting them to assemble it.

Motherboard:

GPU: 8EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti Superclocked Fermi 900MHZ 1024MB GDDR5 2XDVI Mini-HDMI PCI-E Video Card

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB

RAM:

Power Supply:

Case: Coolermaster Haf 912 Black Mid Tower ATX Case 4X5.25 1X3.5 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB Sound

SSD: OCZ Vertex Plus 120GB 2.5IN SATA2 Indilinx Arowana Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD

I have literally no clue what to get from here, I know I want very good ram, minimum 8gb of 1866 and a good mobo that supports it but I don't need top of the line mobo, I would like to keep it around 120-160$ but I am flexible if its a really good bargain.

Why again do you need 1866 RAM when it will have no impact on performance for gaming (compared to 1333) and the money can be better spent upgrading a component that actually does? Like a better video card.

I was just told it was the best choice, I don't really know a whole lot about computer components. And I thought that was a top video card? keep in mind I want to stick with Nvidia*

sandy bridge doesnt even support ram above 1333 mhz though generally 1600mhz is considered the sweetspot assuming its only around 5 dollares more than 1333

1866 RAM is a huge waste of money when you are only packing a mid level graphics card. 1600? Ok sometimes you can find 1600 RAM at very good deals but 1866 is over the top and enthusiasts go higher than that anyway.

Also if you are getting an i5-2500k you will also need an aftermarket cooler because the stock solution is terrible for overclocking, which is what you are in for money wise.

I dont actually know what max budget we are working with here, so I dont know how much money you have on top of the money you are about to save not wasting it on RAM.

It supports higher than 1333 but not "officially" is how I have come to accept it.

If you have literally no clue than at least explain why you think you need very good memory. The difference between a $40 1333MHz cas9 kit and a 1866MHz cas8 kit is something you will never notice in gaming and most tasks. Is 1 FPS worth $50+?

Your entire configuration is bad because you haven't pricematched.

You selected a Indilinx SSD which is terrible. If you want a cheap SSD than get a second generation Sandforce such as a Kingston HyperX or OCZ Agility 3.

A GTX 560 Ti for nearly $300 is seriously overpriced. If you want to pay nearly $300, get a GTX 560 Ti 448 Twin Frozr III: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=65880&promoid=1301

All the good deals from Boxing Week are sold out so just get a Seasonic S12II 520: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=52173&promoid=1301

Get the ASUS P8Z68-M Pro for your motherboard: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=64104&promoid=1301

Get Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57078&promoid=1301

Note I didn't try very hard since you didn't try at all providing information.

My little brother is looking to put a budget gaming PC together in the $600-$800 ballpark.

His friends suggested him the following:

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)

Case: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147023

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Graphics Card: MSI R6850 Cyclone PE/OC Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

CPU: AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor FD4100WMGUSBX

Power supply: OCZ ZS Series 650W 80PLUS Bronze High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandy Bridge Core i3 i5 i7 and AMD Phenom

DVD Drive: LITE-ON Black 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model iHDS118-04 - OEM

I thought you guys could help him do better than that. We would prefer to get things assembled and shipped from NCIX.ca (we are canadian). The resolution of his screen is 1680 x 1050 and he'd like to be able to play modern PC games on modest settings.

EDIT: We'd like to spend close to $600 on the price of the parts before taxes and shipping.

Also I am working with about 1200$ roughly, I can go over if its a decent value.

I don't think the prices will settle at their old values very rapidly. People have gotten used to the higher prices for harddisks and I don't see retailers passing up the opportunity for extra profit. Especially since the days of the largest discounts and special offers are over.

dont think anyone got used to a 2-300% price increase. infact im waiting since months to buy a new hd cause i plain refuse to pay those insane prices.

the day i can get a decent hard drive for a reasonable price again i will instabuy.

At the prices RAM are at currently, even $5 more for 1600 over 1333 is pretty bad.
If you can get 4GB 1333 for ~$20 and 1600 for ~$25, you're essentially paying 25% for much less than 25% gains.

~$5 is trivial when talking about an ~$800-1000 build, but still.

That's one of the worst builds I've ever seen. I'm too lazy to link stuff but:

Get 4gb of 1333mhz ram, that one's a bit too slow for my linkings

Get i5 2400 and a cheap H61 board instead

Get GTX 560 Ti

Get bitfenix merc alpha

Get the CX400 that's on sale

Get the cheapest DVD RW

Get the cheapest reasonably sized SATA-HDD. Try to pricematch when possible.

This should be around 20 + 190 + 60 + 230 + 40 + 44 + 17 + 80 = 681

His friends are not very good friends

For starters they are recommending AMD when Intel has better everything all the time.

Why 1066 RAM? 1333 RAM will have a mostly real impact on performance and is also really cheap.

650W PSU. Yeah that system is going to barely break 200W (at least similar priced Intel parts would).

Check the optimized computer build thread for an idea based on his budget, 600-800 is a bit of a wide range and a lot of breakpoints are made there.

At $1200 you can afford to Crossfire flagship AMD GPU's but for single card configuration you should have at least a 580

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=271861

Make sure your monitors resolution and build quality also make sense as $1200 is sort of the first step into enthusiast territory. Baby steps though.

I thought you guys could help him do better than that. We would prefer to get things assembled and shipped from NCIX.ca (we are canadian)

Edited original post. We'd like to spend close to $600 before taxes and shipping.
