On December 21 2011 10:31 Shiwoo wrote:+ Show Spoiler +Thanks skyR! I had two questions. Is it worth it to throw in a SSD? I looked at some stuff about it based on load up times and what not, but I wanted to get your opinion. My second question is that the i5 2400 says that it is 3.1 GHz, but powerboost 3.4GHz? What does this exactly mean? Thanks again!
The advertised frequency is sort of irrelevant now since your processor usually never runs at this frequency anymore -.-' It's going to downclock to 1.6GHz when it's not being used intensively and it's going to overclock automatically to 3.4GHz depending on the amount of cores being stressed.+ Show Spoiler +3.4GHz = 1 core being used 3.3GHz = 2 cores ... 3.2GHz = 3 cores ... 3.1GHz = 4 cores ...
An SSD is worth it but it won't fit in your budget if you need a HDD for storage. If you have an external HDD or think you're never going to use more than 120gb than sure get one. I think the Samsung 470 128gb for $150 is an good inexpensive option for an SSD. Not as fast as some others but still a lot faster than your traditional HDD.

The configuration can handle most games on reasonably high settings so it should be fine since I don't think SWTOR is that intensive?

I have a problem. I am sitting here next to my half build PC, and as per this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls, I installed the CPU, RAM, GPU and cooler. (i5 2500k, 8 gigs patriot ddr3 1333, powercolor 6870, and hyper 212 evo respectively) on my asrock extreme3 gen 3. I got to the part where you test boot it, and upon boot, the PSU, cpu cooler, and video card fans all spin for about 2 seconds then stop for about 3 seconds, all at the same time, and just keeps doing this. the speaker doesn't make a beep or anything, and nothing on screen.
What's wrong with it?
EDIT: After research, i found that the seemingly random numbers represented problems. most of them were good, but 2 worry me, the first one it says the problem is 2f, or memory initialization (other), this doesn't happen if I only have 1 stick in. The other one is 56, or invalid CPU type or speed. Did I do something wrong here? How do I fix it?

Does anyone know if the voltage of Cpu Vcore under HWmonitor is accurate? I am getting 1.04min and 1.06max in HWmonitor, 1.04 in CPU-Z and 1.3511 as VID in coretemp. I oced my 2500k a month ago somewhat following a guide. (I remember only changing the multiplier to 43). Do these numbers sound right? should i try to undervolt and see if its stable? Sorry if I am being lazy, but 30min of searching by myself didnt get me anywhere.

1.04v for idle sounds normal... but idle doesn't really mean much.
|
under prime95 test it say 1.06 on CPU-Z, I had only ran it for like 5 minutes.
|
1.06v is low though if its really at that voltage than that's amazing.
|
Exactly, which leads to my question as to if HWmonitor and CPU-z are accurate or if I need to download another program.
I read somewhere that coretemp was a good program to look at the voltage but then I read VID only means the voltage required for the CPU to be stable at stock. so if it needs 1.3 for 3.3, how can it use 1.05 for 4.3?

edit: thats the reason I came here, every "answer" like coretemp lead to another question "wtf is VID" and then more confusion.

Yes these programs use sensors located on the board. All they do is take the data from the hardware element sitting on the board and display it to you. No programs should be more or less accurate than another, however realize that how you average out data is important to the viewing experience.
Also realize that sensors go bad, or are outright defective a lot of the time.

Hey, looking to build a computer . I already have a case (and cooling). Also I have enough storage, so I'd prefer a SSD.
What is your budget? 800 US
What is your resolution? 19200x1080
What are you using it for? Gaming and likely Streaming. I'd like to play most games out now maxed (SC2, Skyrim for instance) and be able to play most games at high graphics for the next year.
What is your upgrade cycle? 2 years+ for the full system, will probably add a second graphics card eventually
When do you plan on building it? Early January
Do you plan on overclocking? Nope
Do you need an Operating System? Nope
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Yes
Where are you buying your parts from? ncix.ca or newegg.com. I live in Canada so it must ship here, and accept paypal.

out of curiosity a i52400+ hd radeon 6870 should last around 2.5 years right? (being able to play games on low-medium)
also will the new hd radeon chips(As in the 7xxx series coming out) work with a h61 motherboard? or would that require a better board.
Thanks for any help you guys can give

Who knows if it'll last 2.5 years. We don't know how demanding games will be in 2.5 years so who knows. Yes your current motherboard will work with new HD7000 series GPUs.

If you go for a i5 2500k + GTX560 Ti build, you won't be able to really afford an SSD. Unless you own both a CPU heatsink and power supply.

H61 will work with 7xxx cards.

ah ok thanks the guy at microcenter was like it will require pci 3.0 so i got scared lol ended up getting the asus as recommended

I just managed to get a hold of a 2tb hdd for slightly above the price it cost a few months ago. The things you get happy about lol...

After some extensive research the past two days, I decided to go ahead and plan for a gaming pc. It will be my first build in around six years and first time I will try to OC. ^^;
Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K Mobo: ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z - LGA 1155 - Z68 Memory: Corsair Vengeance Blu 8 GB (2X4 GB) PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin SDRAM CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B SSD: SanDisk 120 GB Solid State Drive GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 560 1024 MB Heatsink: CoolerMaster 212+ EVO Power: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 Mid Tower ATX
Any thoughts? This build is currently just below $1000 USD. Any underwhelming or overkill parts listed or is this build ready to go? Everybody's thoughts are much appreciated.

wow, that was fast. I edited out the 560 Ti for a 560 to save $80. Any thoughts on the 560?
I'll go ahead and read up on all the parts you recommended. Thank you!
