Thanks Skyr, this guy really doesn't know what he wants. Now he's thinking of just saving a little more and spending around 750 lolol.

First off , thanks to this thread and the awesome contributors for helping me build my current pc. It's awesome, went together almost flawlessly, and have had 0 problems and booted up first try.
Friend of mine is wanting to build a new pc to play more modern games(he mentioned KOTOR) He has HDD's already OS 9800 GT 2x Dell 23" ultrasharps, but not planning on dual monitor gaming.
Its unlikely he will play something like crysis, BF3, but maybe skyrim. I advised against the NZXT H2 as I read a bunch of shit review for it, and I chose the antec performance series instead and i like it. But he will be getting some sort of "noise reduction" case so that's going to bump up the price of course. The power supply is overkill but it says "silent pro" so he wants it, anything else out there similar/quiet for cheaper? He is also interested in getting an aftermarket cooler, just for noise reduction.
He wants to spend around $500.00 USD.

H67 has native SATA 6Gbps, H61 does not. You don't want to pay over $100 for a H67 board, you might as well get a P67 or Z68 board at this price point.
There's no point in getting 1600MHz memory since H61 and H67 only runs memory at 1333MHz. You can get a less expensive 1333MHz kit for around $30.
The Coolermaster Silent Pro isn't that great. There are better units in terms of everything such as the Rosewill Capstone for $60: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066
The 9800GT will probably be the biggest cause of noise since it gets hot and the reference heatsink was sort of shit.
A decent build.
A Radeon HD6870 offers similar performance and can often be had for less: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948 But if you want to remain with EVGA, there are less expensive SKUs so I'm not sure why you selected the MSI model when EVGA -KR models are $180: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130660 and Gigabyte model is $185: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125383
You're also missing a power supply and an aftermarket heatsink.

600$ build with a 2500k? No that's just not going to happen, you need to do some cutting somewhere <_<
|
I think Cerumo has parts he is salvaging from somewhere else. Like a PSU and HDD.
|
HDD and Heat sink yes, but I missed a power supply. Any suggestions on one? Also thanks for the video card suggestions, going with Radeon HD6870 now. Saves 20$.

How are the new OCZ Indilinx controllers looking? I think they're being released as Octane and Petrol? Seems like there's a sudden influx of non-Sandforce based SSDs, with Samsung and OCZ both producing their own controllers now.
|
Just look at reviews?
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5147/the-ocz-octane-review-512gb/8
The good news is that if OCZ is able to deliver reliable and compatible firmware, the Octane is worth owning. It performs at the top of its class, and it's priced more aggressively than OCZ's SandForce based drives
Samsung 470 also had a Samsung controller fyi. Non-Sandforce SSDs have existed for a long time (eg. JMicron, Marvell, Intel, Samsung, Toshiba).

assuming im only looking to play/stream sc2 - would I be better of having a laptop with an i7-2630QM with a GT 540M or a laptop with a i5-2410M with a GT 555M?
|
assuming the 555M is a Lenovo(im almost 99% certain) both of those would be bad options and poor price-performance. Also I wouldn't stream with a laptop unless you don't want to have a quality higher than 360p

none because laptops suck at that, but for streaming SC2 on low some low-end Llano would be my choice assuming the streaming program supports 4 threads, if not an i5 is fine along with Gt540M.

For a laptop I wouldn't consider streaming as a viable option unless you have a current-gen quad core i7.
Even the mobile Llano A8 (top end) are pretty much just Athlon II X4 at around 2.0 GHz when all the cores are loaded up. An Athlon II X4 at around 3.0 GHz already has trouble running the game smoothly and streaming, so the mobile part is really in trouble. Low-end Llano (A4) are just dual cores, so I don't know what he's thinking? The A6 are quad cores, but clocked even lower.
Take the i7-2630QM please, if you want to stream things other than your desktop.

Is it possible to install a copy of Windows XP on a new bare drive using my computer then transferring that same bare drive to another computer? Will it work?

Yes, but it won't really work well because the install of Windows XP will be set up for the other computer and thus have all sorts of wrong drivers and configurations, which generally causes problems.
That's assuming that the two computers aren't more or less identical, which is what I'd expect for a home user.
|
A6s are what I mean o.O Does laptop even have A4s? And yeah that'd be good for just 360p at 10-15fps
