![]() My current CPU is like this: ![]() I'd like to get an i5 like this. How do I know if it will be compatible? The OP of this thread included a lot of X's and numbers under the CPU spoiler, but I'm not totally sure how to interpret them.

Core i5 processors are on an entirely different socket so you would be required to buy a new motherboard and new DDR3 memory if you want a new processor. Ah I see! Is there an especially good time to do this? Are there like christmas or boxing day specials I should be aware of or is it just a matter of manning up and dropping $300-400?

The problem with Chrome OS is that you might as well just use a full sized notebook for it. Most places, like cafes and public institutions, offer free wi-fi these days so its not like internet is hard to access. We took a look at Chromebooks at work. Considering Acer and Samsung sold only around 5,000 of them so far (as I predicted), I'm guessing the world agreed with us that Google Chrome shoved into a shoddy netbook is pretty bad. Edit: On December 14 2011 11:14 Myrmidon wrote: I know the Edge is good (at least early in the life cycle) since I've recently seen and touched one, and I've handled some midrange IdeaPads, but still it's hard to extrapolate that to the bottom of the IdeaPad product line. Thinkpad Edge is priced and positioned more like Dell Vostro, so I don't think you can compare that to the bargain bin stuff, which need to cut everything since they're operating on razer-thin profit margins. If it's just web, maybe Chromebooks are also worth looking at? No idea about low end Ideapads but the Lenovo Essential G series is still a bit better than their competitors (Samsung, Acer, Toshiba for example) I feel. The palm rest is (perhaps worryingly) rigid and there isn't any real keyboard flex.

I'm not expecting much improvement from it either since there's an awful amount of cannibalization between it and Android (both platforms serve to push advertising and Google services)...and Android is winning by a stupidly huge margin. Currently it looks like a project which Google gave to OEMs who wanted to use remaining netbook parts; the original netbook that used old Pentium processors (I think) wasn't actually much different. There's zero appeal beyond the bundled wireless internet that comes with it, which you can buy cheap prepaid dongles from a carrier for. It doesn't target businesses, because businesses generally aren't poor and will spend enough money on good enough hardware that doesn't piss off employees, nor does it target consumers since who wants a tiny little netbook in the post-PC age? You're right Google's Enterprise and Docs support are currently miles more awful than Microsoft's offerings but improving support isn't going to change the Chromebook from being anything but a way for OEMs to use up low end hardware. I argued that the Chromebook would be an utter failure no matter what in the Chromebook thread and it feels good to be vindicated.

They are what the netbook was supposed to be, except had almost no support. I was actually considering getting one, but after seeing the result I decided not to.

A gtx 560 is basicly like a HD6870 which is like 20$ cheaper. The psu should be enough but wouldn't have enough connectors for the GPU.
