i'm not sure exactly what is broken with my pc, but i have a feeling it's the gpu and/or mobo. all i need is a mobo and cpu and ram. i'd like to stream (this rig i can stream 480 and stream blackops, but i'd like to do 720p
i've heard stuff about these i5's, but i'm not sure which is which etc etc etc. and what type of mobo are we talking here? I'd like to spend less than 400$

Hello everyone. My girlfriend wants a computer for christmas for doing nothing more than surfing the internet. She doesn't play any games and is indifferent as to whether it is a laptop, netbook, or desktop. Since her requirements are so low, What does anyone recommend I get her? Budget is around $300. Feel free to PM me or post in here if you have any suggestions!

300$ is really tough with the hard drive prices, but something like this should suit her fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116409 52 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138332 50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313101 10 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811164118 32 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151233 17
That's all the components excluding a hard drive, totaling around 160$. If you add in win7 and HDD, you actually will go over 300$. There also aren't really laptops below 300$ either. You could try something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103297 This should be enough for just surfing the net but might feel sluggish and I'm not sure if she'd enjoy it that much.

I'd like to spend less than 400$ Would just go for 2500k with a cheap P67 mobo and 8gb of DDR3 ram, that should cost you around 215 + 100 + 30 = 345$, add in some CPU cooler like hyper 212+ and it's around 370$. This is assuming you'll overclock, you can get an i5 2400 and a h61 mobo for much cheaper, like 190 + 50$.

For both cases, you're probably better off buying the cheapest Dell/HP you can find. The Inspiron 620s comes with i3-2100 + Windows 7 + Wireless card + 1TB 7200RPM hard drive for $450 and free shipping.
Edit: The only other real alternative are refurbished desktops from the Dell Outlet. Those will certainly be around the $300 region and be full featured.

G530 will have the best CPU performance of the 3, and sufficient video performance for typical non-gaming web-surfing and video-viewing tasks. You'll also need a mobo and RAM of course, but an ASRock H61M-VS runs about $60 and 4GB (2x2) RAM about $20, the G530 is ~$50.

Huh, Athlon II x3 has clearly better performance than a G530

In what programs? I doubt web browsers and other such light programs a typical home user uses run on 3 threads.

Nobody is truly indifferent between a desktop, laptop, and netbook. Does she like mobility at all? Would it improve her life if she could travel with it? Maybe quiz her a little bit more to find out which she can benefit best from because I can't make a recommendation with the given info. I can say $300 or a tad more is enough to take you between the three options given the technical requirements.

Even 2.9gigs should be better than the G530, even single-threaded. Not certain about that but certain about 3.0.

Not bad, but...
- HAF 912 is pretty much the same for like $20 less usually - motherboard is a little bit overpriced...let's say by $10 - unless you're really going to run SLI to handle 3 x 1920 x 1080 resolution gaming, a GTX 560 Ti 1GB is like $40 less at least and performs the same - CM eXtreme Power Plus 600W is pretty crappy, so I'd rather have something else for like $45 rather than this at $61 anyway
So it's $100 in savings or $100 in "savings" depending on how you want to value those components.

which ssd would you guys recommend for just a boot drive for windows 7 64bit? cheapest possible.
|
I'm not really a believer in SSDs for boot only. But for just booting Windows 7, just get the cheapest SSD available where you live. I don't think any of the ancient SSDs predating TRIM would be cheaper than more modern ones anyway. This may end up being some first-gen SandForce drive with poor reliability, but that's not a big deal if it's just for Windows boot?

Upon further questioning mobility would be a plus, so a laptop is now higher on the list. Screen size isn't that big of a deal. Obviously bigger is always better, however it would not be a deal breaker. Budget is still around $300 although if it makes a big difference between a p.o.s. notebook and one that lasts I would be willing to go up to $500.

Here's a Lenovo IdeaPad, 15.6" (1366x768 though, but who would expect different at this price?), Pentium B950 (latest gen dual core), 4GB RAM, 500GB 5400rpm HDD, $330 shipped:

for closer to $500 you can get something of higher build quality for sure, since small business laptops start for about that much, but I think even the lowest-end IdeaPads are not that terrible. This price looks pretty low for something without a netbook processor.

I agree with you, I feel that the low-end Lenovos are more acceptable than the crappy Dells and HPs I've seen. I got my gf a ThinkPad Edge E420 (14", 1366 x 768, i3, 7200RPM HDD) and all around it just feels like a great budget laptop (build quality and all).
