No I don't have a HDD but like I said, I can upgrade the video card in a year and and that's ~$70 under budget that I could use for something else.

What is your resolution?

1280x1024 but might upgrade in a Year

What are you using it for?

Would like to play sc2 on high/ultra and stream and run music software such as Steinberg Cubase

What is your upgrade cycle?

I could upgrade 1 component every year ie: resolution year after purchase, gpu year after, CPU year after that

When do you plan on building it?

Hopefully by 1st week of December

Do you plan on overclocking?

Probably not, sounds dangerous

Do you need an Operating System?

I can get one from school so no

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

I don't know what this means or if I should.

Where are you buying your parts from?

CompUSA, tigerdirect, newegg, amazon

could try this

Wow great price. Can anyone confirm if this would be ideal for what I want to do?

The total doesn't include the case for some reason. It's a $55 case so it would make your total around $580. You'll want a $30-$40 case (which would still add to that total, making it somewhere around $560) such as a Bitfenix Merc Alpha for such a budget: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63256&promoid=1363 or whatever else goes on sale during Black Friday / Cyber Monday.

The memory at $30 is sold out. Though a $30 8gb kit is bound to show up again within the week.

1TB HDDs can be had for less, here's a Seagate Barracuda for $130: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58746

It's probably best to wait for a $30-$35 sale on the CX430V2 or similar power supply. Maybe the Antec Neo Eco 520C will go on sale again for $40.

If you're trying to save money and all you're concerned about is playing Starcraft II at 1280x1024 for a year until you upgrade your monitor / graphics card, you should probably consider a GT 240 for the time being as it is capable of playing on ultra at your low resolution and does reasonably well on medium/high at 1080p: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150553 If this is the case, you may want to invest in a slightly better power supply or invest in a core i5.

It probably isn't the best idea to wait until the first week of December to build, you're going to be missing out on Black Friday / Cyber Monday. I would suggest grabbing some of the components if they go on sale. Though there is a downside to this (if something better goes on sale afterwards or the component you bought goes on sale for a lower price at a later date, you'll want to punch yourself) and some people tend to overspend (a lot) because they are not able to manage a budget or not being able to help themselves. You'll also need to be somewhat knowledgeable about component pricing or ask beforehand to know if it's worth purchasing or not.

I wanted to have it done by Dec. 1 so I will definitely take advantage of the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals.
So it looks like I'll be doing the following:
CPU: Intel Core i5 (A LINK TO THE ONE I SHOULD GET WOULD BE APPRECIATED)
Motherboard: Biostar H61MGC Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($56.97 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda for $130
Video Card: GT 240 $54.99
Case: Bitfenix Merc Alpha $40
Power Supply: Antec 380W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($45.00 @ Amazon)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($19.99 @ SuperBiiz)

I will get a new GPU in a year, then update my monitor later

You'll want to purchase the DVD burner from NCIX as well for $17: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60344&promoid=1190

You'll want to get a core i5 2300, 2310, 2320, 2400, 2500, or 2500k - listed from worse to best so pay accordingly. If you have a Microcenter near you, the core i5 2400 will be $150. If not, this is probably the best option for $175: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63959&promoid=1190

I don't think a Earthwatts 380D for $45 is a good purchase. You can get the 650w variant (much more power than you'll ever need for such a configuration) for $7 more: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59339 or just wait for a power supply sale or get the CX430V2 instead since it has mail in rebate.

Which i5 you should get depends on what deals are going on. Essentially, only the i5-2500k can be overclocked. While that increases performance a lot, it costs more in motherboard and heatsink (and the CPU itself), so unless you want to add $70-100 to the budget, it's not really an option.

The rest of the i5s (i5-2300, 2400, 2500, etc) are pretty similar, with minor variances in clock speed. The higher the number the better (there are some exceptions like low voltage chips or whatever, but you won't be interested in those), but not by much, the difference is pretty small. So just go with the cheapest one on sale at Newegg or us.ncix and pay an extra $5 to bump up a level or so if the prices work out that way.

I dunno what the deals will be next weekend, or when we will know what they will be.

Hey guys, it's been a while. I said I would post my updated build, and I've been asking around other sites.

CPU+Mobo: $140 AMD Phenom IIX4 970+Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P AM3+
http://www.microcenter.com/specials/promotions/AMDbundlePROMO.html

RAM: $32 CORSAIR XMS3 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145315

HDD: $95 Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s. I'm trying hard not to recommend 320GB drives at $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136770

GPU: $145 SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908

PSU: $65 SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094

Case: $32 COOLER MASTER Elite 370
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=55447

So a few notes. I was recommended this on tomshardware (don't know your opinion about this). While the HD is 320gb I think it's fine for what my needs are. I downgraded the recommended 6870 to a 6850 because the sale ended. What do you guys think? If you don't like it I'll post my original build that I wanted.

What is your budget?
~1000, but 1100 max.

What is your resolution?
1920x1024

What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming and streaming

What is your upgrade cycle?
3+

When do you plan on building it?
Black Friday

Do you plan on overclocking?
Yes

Do you need an Operating System?
Yes, Windows 7 64bit

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Yes, I want to SLI/Crossfire, but i am buying the second gpu at a later date so it shouldnt be included in this build.

Where are you buying your parts from?

notes: Should i wait off on buying till hdd prices go back down or buy the parts and wait for a good hdd to come back. Maybe i should grab what skyR suggested of http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58746?

Am I overreaching if i want a gti 570 or hd 6970 with i5 2500k?

Though my knowledge of building a computer from scratch is little, my brother in law will help me build it since he is builds them for people quite often.

Why not just sli/crossfire now? Why later? And what are you going to do on 1080p that makes sli/crossfire necessary?

just some pocket cash for a 3 week long trip I'm taking in December. I actually have no idea, but it was suggested by my roommates. I just wanted to leave the possibility that i could sli/crossfire in the future since this build would last me for a long time.

You don't need dual video cards unless you're using a high resolution monitor like a 30" 2560x1600 monitor or multiple monitors for gaming specifically (three screens acting as one).

multiple video cards could potentially be useful for 120mhz screens or 3d gaming, but again, that requires a monitor upgrade.

In virtually all cases with one monitor, it's best to just get a single video card. Basically because the high-end cards can already maximize game settings on 1920x1080 monitors and even where SLI can theoretically be cost-efficient, some games don't play well with SLI/Crossfire and it can be a pain to configure.

In terms of upgrading, it's usually cheaper to just replace a high-end card than buy a second one to SLI/Crossfire. Unless you buy used, they don't go down all that much in price.

Ok so this is supposed to be a computer that can run SC2 on high/ultra settings.

And this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=851772&CatId=114 is supposed to be a computer that can't. What is the big difference between these 2?

In that computer you have a GT520 and a AMD Athlon II X3 which is absolutely horrible.
The GPU and CPU in the custom build is way better

Short answer: yes. Processors are very complicated digital logic circuits. Some designs are just a lot faster than others at running most instructions.

Here's a comparison between the Athlon II X4 (4 cores, 3.1 GHz) and Core i5-2400 (4 cores, 3.1 GHz nominal):

Is it true that if you use an AMD processor, and an ATI graphics card, they will communicate in a way that will improve performance a lot?
