Thanks There is probably a cheaper ASRock Pro3 out there you can get that is cheaper than that motherboard and will have fine everything else. The motherboard you linked uses x8x8 when x16x4 motherboards are fine especially for someone not running a dual GPU system. You really won't see any benefit at all from 1600 RAM, go with 8 gigs of cheaper RAM, Mushkin is a fine RAM maker I believe, though some places you can find 1600 at a steal. You don't need 600W for a single card system. Corsair is a fine brand, and you should stick with fine brands, but 600W is a bit too much. In other words, you were right! Hi, not sure what you mean about x8x8 and x16x4? It refers to the bandwidth available to the PCI-E slots. The higher the value, the more bandwidth a slot has. Typically, only the graphics card requires high bandwidth, while other cards don't need nearly as much (if you even have anything other than the graphics card to plug in, most people don't). So if you're going for a single graphics card setup, it's best to get a motherboard that puts as much of the bandwidth to a single slot, the "x16". For dual GPU setups, you'll want both slots to have reasonably high bandwidth, which makes the x8 + x8 option better.
Pretty much all modern motherboards have a PCI-e x16 slot. A motherboard that runs x8x8 will ALWAYS run the first slot in x16 mode should the second slot be empty.

I found this - http://www.ebuyer.com/267317-asrock-p67-pro3-se-socket-1155-8-channel-hd-audio-atx-motherboard-p67-pro3-se - seems reasonable at £73.53, as I do not intend on getting two GPUS. Am I right that its better to spread the RAM across all 4 DIMMs, instead of say getting 1x8GB one or 2x4GB ones? What wattage would you recommond for this setup? 500? Thanks
I've about two dozen of those motherboards so I can vouch for them all the way in terms of price. There are cheaper BIOSTAR motherboards written about in the optimized gaming computer thread also here on TL, that are perhaps more ideal for people who only have one PCI-e device. But I can say that motherboard you linked is strong, the only problem with it is that it has ZERO onboard lights.
I would suggest running only 2 sticks of RAM so you could expand in the future, although I highly doubt youll ever need more than 8 gigs for a loooooooong time. So 4 or 8, your choice, and both are fine choice.
Currently my defacto single card PSU of choice is the Antec Earthwatts 380. But others have there own choices for also entirely valid reasons.

Hey, everyone. A friend of mine is looking for some opinions on the following two setups:
$1,141 1 x Processor ( Intel® Core™ i7 960 Processor (4x 3.20GHz/8MB L3 Cache) ) 1 x Memory ( 6 GB [2 GB X3] DDR3-1600 - Corsair or Major Brand ) 1 x Video Card ( NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 - 2GB ) 1 x Motherboard ( [3-Way SLI] Gigabyte G1.Guerrilla w/ Killer Network Technology ) 1 x Power Supply 700 Watt
$1,053 1 x Processor ( Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor (4x 3.30GHz/6MB L3 Cache) ) 1 x Memory ( 8 GB [4 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory Module - Corsair or Major Brand ) 1 x Video Card ( NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti - 1GB - EVGA Superclocked - Core: 900MHz ) 1 x Motherboard ( [SLI] Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 -- Lucid Virtu Technology ) 1 x Intel Smart Response Technology ( SSD Cache - 30 GB Kingston SSDNow V Series ) 1 x Power Supply 700 Watt
I'm no expert on this stuff, but I told him the latter was a better option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the second is a small improvement on CPU, GPU, and RAM, for lower cost. It's still priced high though. The cost of listed components (or equivalents) alone is under $700. Add say $20 for an optical drive, $60 for a 1TB hard drive, and $40+ for a case, and that's a complete computer.

Only consider taking the i7 over the i5-2500k if you plan on working with Computer-Aided Design (like Solidworks), engineering simulations and/or heavy audio-video encoding. Only those kinds of applications (perhaps some other that I'm not aware of) take advantage of the HT from the i7 and will show some gap of performance in comparison to the i5.
If you plan just on gaming, gogo i5.

Don't consider an i7 960 over an i5 2500k ever, actually. 2500k is a solid bit faster clock for clock, and OCs way higher. The HT won't make up for the severe difference in raw power.

Looks like similiar wording to ibuypower so even though the second option is the better build you're paying around 300-350+ for air and the ibuypower default PSUs are so terrible that you risk exploding your computer

They are quite shady.
If anyone is absolutely set on getting an Ibuypower PC at least upgrade the PSU to the Corsair CX 600 v2 or ask around here what would be a reasonable choice (that one was the cheapest non-mystery PSU they had on their configuration list, the last time I checked).

Outstanding. Once and for all, proof that people don't need to spend more on the stuff...

to be fair, most thermal compounds require a burn-in period during which temps will drop 3-5C. not saying it justifies some of their prices though.

Last I heard the only one that really required that was AS-5 and knockoffs. And you can force a burn-in via running P95 up to load for 10-15 minutes 10-20 times.
Spending more on thermal paste is like spending more on RAM. There's other places the extra money can go first for more benefit, and if you don't know how to get the benefit out of it, it's wasted money.

I'd like to know how the mayo does after a reasonable amount of time to burn-in (I'd like to know how it does after a few days of various workloads). Oh man, cracking up big time @ work ... mayo...

My guess would be that the mayo fucking reeks after a reasonable burn in period. You know what goes into that shit? I'd run my CPU cooler bareback first.

Yeah, mayo's not going to sit well for long at room temperature, and certainly not when being sandwiched *cough cough* between a CPU and a heatsink.
I'd go for the toothpaste, or lipstick if available.

There's no point in getting a Deluxe if your technical knowledge is so low... you won't ever use the features that it provides over the less expensive P8P67 Pro or P8Z68-V.
You don't have an aftermarket heatsink.
Why buy a mediocre power supply when you are going to do SLI GTX 570s? You should be looking at Corsair TXv2, XFX Core Edition Pro, Antec High Current Gamer, or Seasonic S12II - whichever is less expensive since they're practically all the same.
Why pay $135 for a Sandforce drive when you have little to zero technical knowledge? You will basically see no difference in real world scenarios between it and the less expensive and much more reliable Crucial M4.
Why pay extra for a Superclock variant when you can just get the regular -KR or -AR cards for $10-$20 less. You can do the overclocking yoruself without voiding the warranty and the -AR has lifetime warranty as well.

Hey I build my computer a while ago and it has been running fine. I have a gtx 560 and every like 10 min my screen goes black for like 3 seconds then it comes back on and a little message appears in the bottom right saying something like nividia restored or something similar. I can edit exactly what it says next time it happens but it goes away real fast. Any ideas or what i should do?
|
It's probably display driver failed and has recovered. You can try downclocking the card and see if it still occurs.

Update drivers to current release drivers, downclock a bit, verify your GPU is seated and connected to the PSU properly.
Or maybe flowers and sweets.
