People still buy Windows OS? Note he has 2 6870s and included OS/router...that might be why the cost is so high. I'd say shave some $$$ and get two 6950s instead. I'd cut the SSD for now, grab two 6950s then grab a SSD during black friday.
|
Oh my, you guys are fast. Thanks for the advice, I shaved off about $75 with the price matching.
@Trickstaloki Yeah the OS, Wireless Adapter, and crossfire add up. Also paying $40 for them to assemble the computer. I'm kind of set on the 6870's but I'd save like $48 going with the 6850's so I'll consider it at least. I'll have to look into the Black Friday thing, sounds kind of dire but saving money's always good.

Imo 6870 would be the best thing to crossfire(surprise surprise), it's only like 40 dollars more than crossfiring 6850s and 6850s might not run absolutely everything in 1080p like the 6870s will.

Read on from that, the difference is quite significant at least to me.

Hello all. I have not built a PC in over 10 years now. I am looking in building a good gaming machine, that can run SC2 at max, Dota 2 and some cool FPS games like Rage etc. I am selling my 3 year old iMac to cover alot of the cost. I am in no hurry to purchase parts and have no problem in buying some parts and waiting on others. Would like to be up and running with 1-2 months though
What is your budget?
Ideally do not want to spend anymore than £700. May be flex in this.
What is your resolution?
Current monitor is 1680 x 1050. However I would like to be able to plug this up to my Samsung 40" TV via HDMI which is 1920 x 1080.
What are you using it for?
Mostly gaming. However I would like to have possiblity to watch Blu Ray movies on my TV. I also would like to do some streaming of games etc.
What is your upgrade cycle?
I am not intending to upgrade for quite some time after this build. I would like it to last, or at least only have a small part need to be upgraded.
When do you plan on building it?
Within the next 1-2 months.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I think I would like to overclock, if there is significant advantages. However if it is too expensive, I dont have too.
Do you need an Operating System?
No.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Probably not.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I am from the UK. The expensive UK

There's no such thing as a core i7 2500k. It's a typo and if you scroll further down to the parts included, you would realize it's a core i5 2500k. And that combo isn't cheap.
ModXStream is an okay power supply.

There is probably a cheaper ASRock Pro3 out there you can get that is cheaper than that motherboard and will have fine everything else. The motherboard you linked uses x8x8 when x16x4 motherboards are fine especially for someone not running a dual GPU system.
You really won't see any benefit at all from 1600 RAM, go with 8 gigs of cheaper RAM, Mushkin is a fine RAM maker I believe, though some places you can find 1600 at a steal.
You don't need 600W for a single card system. Corsair is a fine brand, and you should stick with fine brands, but 600W is a bit too much. In other words, you were right!

He wants to play all games on max @ 1080p for the next two years. He would like to play BF3 at max, but if it really takes two 580s in SLI he isn't going to waste the money. His upgrade cycle is approx. 2 years and his budget is $1k CAD. It doesn't have to be exact, that's just a general number. He has monitor, keyboard, etc, he just needs the rig.
I don't really follow too many prices, so I would appreciate it if someone has some good cheap links they could provide.
I'm thinking i5-2500k because OCing isn't a problem. We'll need a relatively good CPU cooler and mobo for OCing, I guess we'll aim for 4.5-4.7GHz. RAM is cheap, so we'll probably get 8GB 1333MHz (unless 1600MHz is about the same price). We won't bother with an SSD because he probably doesn't even know what it is and I'm not going to baby his computer and install everything in proper places for him. I suppose we'll go for a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint unless there's a better alternative. He'll need a case with good room/airflow since his current case is a piece of shit. A couple months ago his PSU died, and he got a new one, so we'll probably reuse that, assuming it's still functioning. It was a Rosewill something 500-520W I think. Will this be enough quality power for the rig if we get a high end GPU? On to the GPU, what would you recommend? We would have about $400-500 left in the budget for a card, right? GTX 580? Go ATi?
Thanks + Show Spoiler + Thanks. Quick question though: how much of a difference is there between the 6950 1GB and the 6950 2GB? Also, what kind of performance increase do you get by "unlocking" it from a 6950 to a 6970 and how difficult is it?

It isn't hard to reflash the firmware but you run the risk of making it into a brick. Most warranty's will not cover a card that has been bricked in this way.
|
Between 1GB and 2GB version there's no difference in performance unless you're cranking up AA on really high resolutions like 2560x1440, on some titles.
Reflashing is not worth the risk in my estimation. You also have to stick with certain models (often times the original ones with the noisier stock cooling) and pay for the 2GB version. And then the GPU you get might not actually run well with HD 6970's shader count. Even if it works, maybe it won't work at HD 6970 clocks. Maybe it was binned to be a HD 6950 because is significant defects in the deactivated parts.

Exactly. 6950's are failed 6970's at heart. The old 6950's were built under an old classification, when under the current one some, but not all, would probably have gotten away with being a low end 6970. That does not mean old 6950's ARE 6970, and its important to recognize that difference.

I'm gonna start assembling my comp on Saturday, and as this is my very first time, I have a question before I start. Since I'm standing on carpet, will that be dangerous to my components? Do I have to get some kind of grounder?

As long as your environment isn't overly dry, you're not wearing polyester, you're not rubbing your feet against the carpet, and you touch the doorknob to discharge before starting, you should be fine.

Do I have to get some kind of grounder? carpet isn't the greatest place to be assembling a PC. preferably you'd do it off carpet, but if you absolutely can't avoid it just touch the case (if it's metal) ever-so-often to discharge any static you might have accumulated.

Okay, thanks for the suggestions. My kitchen area has no carpet, so I'm planning on assembling it there.

Just ordered the parts: i5 2500k 8GB Mushkin 1333MHz MSI P67A-G43 Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti Thermaltake V4 Black Edition Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB Coolermaster Hyper 212+ Antec Earthwatts Green 650W LG GH24LS70 24X
After price matches and shipping & taxes it came to just over 1k, which is great considering we got about $75 in MiR as well. Right on budget, thanks a bunch.

Even though it's not neccesary, an anti-static wrist strap is not a bad idea to put your mind at ease.

Hi, not sure what you mean about x8x8 and x16x4? I found this - http://www.ebuyer.com/267317-asrock-p67-pro3-se-socket-1155-8-channel-hd-audio-atx-motherboard-p67-pro3-se - seems reasonable at £73.53, as I do not intend on getting two GPUS.
Am I right that its better to spread the RAM across all 4 DIMMs, instead of say getting 1x8GB one or 2x4GB ones?
What wattage would you recommond for this setup? 500?
Thanks

This is all on ebuyer as you can see, perhaps there is better UK sites, that are cheaper? Anything else I can shave money on? If I can get it cheaper than this, I be happy. Also what is likelyhood of these prices dropping within the next month? Thanks There is probably a cheaper ASRock Pro3 out there you can get that is cheaper than that motherboard and will have fine everything else. Hi, not sure what you mean about x8x8 and x16x4?
It refers to the bandwidth available to the PCI-E slots. The higher the value, the more bandwidth a slot has. Typically, only the graphics card requires high bandwidth, while other cards don't need nearly as much (if you even have anything other than the graphics card to plug in, most people don't). So if you're going for a single graphics card setup, it's best to get a motherboard that puts as much of the bandwidth to a single slot, the "x16". For dual GPU setups, you'll want both slots to have reasonably high bandwidth, which makes the x8 + x8 option better.
