Thanks for the ideas guys, you've given me a lot to think about

I don't know how to answer this question x.x, are you asking how much HDD space I need or something else?

CPU: Get an i5 2500k not a 2600k. The 2600k is not worth the money, especially for gaming.
GPU: You could pick the 570, he would be able to play games on high/ultra longer but overall the 560-ti and 6950 are far superior in price per performance. So I'd allso suggest one of those unless you are very demanding, than you might want to take a 570.
RAM: Since you have such a big budget, you might as well get 1600mhz ram, its optimal for performance. If you want to save a bit you could allso get 1333mhz ram, the difference is very small.
PSU: On your budget I wouldn't try to save on the PSU, its a very important component. For a GTX570 I'd get a 500~550W PSU Unless you plan on putting an unholy amount of peripherals in you PC.

Thanks - I will probably put in a 6950 in just because of personal preference

To you guys: is the CM Storm Scout (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX24182%28ME%29.aspx) any good? I hear it can get a little cramped for space w/ large gpu's but what's your opinion of it?

Its a good case, specially if you need the handles to carry it places. Besides, just pick what you think looks cool. Unless ofcourse you have special demands.

Does anyone know if the Cooler Master USP 100 is a good case? Is the power supply that comes with it removable because I'm going to get a separate PSU anyways.

Well, I usually find the reviews from this site to be a little light on solid info, but they do an ok job of documenting the process with pictures, so you can at least get some impressions.

http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/cases/7039-cooler-master-usp-100-mid-tower-case-review?start=9

But if they're saying the temps get a little scary, I'd be worried, since I almost never see one of their reviews have that listed as an issue. A little worrisome, IMO.

Hi, i was just looking to get some feedback on this build. I would be willing to spend more on better components and / or overclocking, but i am not convinced that it is worth it.

+ Show Spoiler +

Western Digital Green 2TB $85

LG GH22NS70 22x DVD-RW Drive OEM $35

NZXT Lexa S Mid Tower Case $89 (Getting this mainly based on aesthetics, if it is terrible let me know)

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with SP1 OEM $105

Intel Core i5 2400 $185

Acer V223HQBD 21.5in Widescreen LCD Monitor $139

Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3N9K2/4G 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 $35

ASRock H61M/U3S3 Motherboard B3 $79

Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB $229

Antec Neo Eco 450C 450W Power Supply $59

TP-Link TL-WN951N Wireless N PCI Adapter $39

All up it is $1079, like i said if there is anything that is absolutely worth upgrading, let me know. But at this point i am satisfied with what i have. I should also note that i have 2 gb of spare ram so i will have 6gb in total.

All help appreciated immensely.

I'll also add that i am Australian, buying everything off Pccg. Which is why the prices are slightly higher than usual.

Mhm, and after looking at some other reviews on hightechlegion.com I'd say a CM 690 II is a much better choice.

You want a 7200 RPM HDD such as a Caviar Blue or Black for the boot drive. The Caviar Greens are meant for storage only. The rest of it is good.

Bear in mind, the only part of their reviews I suggest basing decisions off of are the pictures.

Like I said, the only reason I found their temp comments noteworthy is the fact that they give all kinds of utter shit at least a decent review.

CM 690 II is a decent case, but there's much better places to find reviews normally.

Thanks for the feedback. As a general build would you say that it is adequate? Would it be worth it to spend any extra on a cpu? Or a better Gpu? This is my first build and i am still working things out. Also is a SSD worth it in my situation?

Yes the build is adequate for playing most current and upcoming games on reasonably high settings at 1080p. Unless you play on a larger resolution such as 2560x1440, I would not upgrade the graphics card.

If you plan on overclocking than you can get the Core i5 2500k along with a P67 motherboard and an heatsink which would add a significant amount to your total. But going from a core i5 2400 to a core i5 2500 offers a very negligible performance difference. If you were considering the core i7 2600 instead than maybe... it depends on if the tasks you do take advantage of the eight threads provided by it. Gaming does not, it's only really for professional uses such as editing.

SSD I guess it's worth it if you reboot your computer often or play a lot of games with lots of loading.

Interesting. The monitor i was looking at was 1920x1080. And you say that if i was interested in overclocking go for the i5 2500k, and the p67 motherboard. I know that this will allow me to overclock effectively, but what i am uncertain about, is if overclocking is, in fact, worth it. Would it grant me many, if any benefits while gaming? Will it extend it's life span? I just don't know if it is worth the investment. Also just out of curiosity what is the purpose of the pci express 2.0 x 1 slots? And what is the advantage of getting the p67 motherboard? Thanks for all the help

The advantage of getting a P67 is just overclocking and extra connectivity.

You can see the difference of various clock speeds of the 2500k and other processors in this article: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-2600k-990x.html

Overclocking won't extend the lifespan of the components since you're be running it at a higher frequency and pumping more voltage into it but it won't drastically decrease it, you'll be long upgrading before it dies to a modest overclock. But you were probably talking about performance lifespan in which case yes it will increase it by a year or so maybe.

The purpose of PCI-E x1 slots are for add-on cards such as NICs, sound cards, etc.

Thanks a tonne. Couple more questions, sorry to be annoying

So i have upgraded to the 2500k, and the p67 mobo. Will over clocking require me to invest in a decent heatsink? Or will the stock one do OK? If so which one should i get? Is there anything else i need to know about over clocking?

Overclocking on the newer Intel processors aren't complicated nor does it require a monster of a heatsink. Stock heatsink isn't that great so it's recommended you pick up an aftermarket heatsink. A $30 heatsink such as the Coolermaster Hyper 212+, Xigmatek Gaia, or equivalent will be adequate for 4.5GHz+.

You are a champion. I shall update my components to better suit overclocking. Thank you very much.

Looking to build/buy a new computer to replace my 5 year old comp. Keep in mind I am a total computer building newb so this will be my first build. Have already learned so much reading posts in this forum.

What is your budget?

~$1000, but would not mind spending a little extra.

What is your resolution?

1920 x 1080

What are you using it for?

Mostly gaming, -- would like something that will work on new games for the next 5 years or so. Also to have the capability of streaming would be great.

What is your upgrade cycle?

2-3 years.

When do you plan on building it?

In about a week or two.

Do you plan on overclocking?

No.

Do you need an Operating System?

Yes, Windows 7

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Unsure about this -- I think a single powerful GPU will do fine.

Where are you buying your parts from?

NCIXUS.com in case I become too busy then I can add the assembly fee.

@ChezGod

Here's a configuration for $872 capable of what you are asking for. I know you said you didn't want to overclock but the core i5 2500k & p67 selection is primarily due to pricing so you will have the option to overclock in the future if you change your mind.

Keep in mind some of these sales will end on Wednesday evening so you should add these in your cart to keep sale pricing.

Primary objectives:
Micro ATX / smaller form factor
Streaming (I have good internets)
SCII not necessarily on ultra
2 screens, one 1080p one 720p.
Quiet, runs cool (which will be tasking as it's a MicroATX case)

Processor i7 990x (Don't ask, I didn't buy it for 999$, lol)
Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131658]
RAM 6GB RAM [1600Mhz DDR3 3x2GB]
Case CM Elite 341
HDD Spinpoint 1TB
Graphics Card ATI 5770 Is this a poor decision?
Monitor Syncmaster 23" <3

PSU: 750W (Overkill, right? I already have it, so whatever)
Heatsink: Cooler Master

very poor decision for the gpu, i'd say at least a hd6870 or gtx560ti, but would recommanded a 6950 2gb

and yeah 750w overkill
