Anecdotal evidence from years ago has lots of people shy away from Seagate. If you just need it for pure storage, I'd go Caviar Green probably, unless there's a faster one on sale for less $/GB.
And by anecdotal evidence, I mean the worst kind, the "brother's uncle's cousin's nephew in IT has seen too many die" type of anecdotal.

Caviar Green, the 2TB variant can be had for $65 at Memory Express.

I've got about 600$ to spend on a machine that I'll be using until December. At which point I'll be taking in quite a bit more money and I'll be able to make regular upgrades.
My monitors are 1600x1200, and another side monitor at 1280x1024 that I use for browsing/streams/vent etc. i'd like to upgrade to 2 1600x1200's or even possible 3 down the line
As far as use, I really want something that'll play SC2 on mediumish settings and not stress, but can go to high if I'm not doing something really taxing like mass spawn custom games etc. I mostly want to play SC2, WoW and League of Legends and have a good starting off PC for when Diablo III hits. I've got a hard drive with windows 7 already on it and I'm pretty sure I still have my activation/installation codes.
My upgrade cycle is kind of strange. Right now I can dump about 5-600$ into it, the lower the better but I understand processors and gfx cards are expensive these days.
I want to build it ASAP, preferably in the next 2-3 weeks so current prices are pretty relevant. Sales are good too.
I'm not really sure how much SLI motherboards are but I'm fairly sure they're outside of my price range. If this is something that can be itemized for then great, if not, no worries. I do not plan on overclocking at this time.
I've got a compusa near my house and they carry prices/parts comparable to newegg.com and the like.
So here's some background on my situation. I had a PC i built myself that cost me around $600. I bought all the parts and assembled it. A bug flew into the mobo and fried it and I had to replace it. 6 months later, i get some graphics card problems, i restart a few times and now I get nothing. I assume the PSU is dead and the graphics card too. The mobo, (intel) i'm fairly certain is fine. The RAM is garbage and needs to be replaced entirely. The CD drives I can probably salvage as well as the case (which i'm fond of, it glows green) I've got hard drives which I'm not sure can be saved as I haven't been able to check if they're functional or not as the PC wont even boot.
Any advice or parts lists you guys can give would be extremely appreciated. It's pretty overwhelming and I'd be very grateful for a parts list for an upgradable, flexible gaming PC.
TLDR. 5-600$ to spend on new computer that'll place SC2, LoL, WoW and DIII. Dont need max settings. Run 2 monitors, main one is 1600x1200. might not need new HDD, Mobo or CD drive, but would like those included in a shopping list.
EDIT: should i just buy a premade computer from someone like newegg? If so, a recommendation would be excellent.

The main problem I see is that getting 1600x1200 monitors is rather hard now and rather expensive (almost prohibitively so) due to the mainstreaming of 1920x1080 monitors, you're going to probably have to make a decision as to whether or not you want to drop the old 4:3 monitors since the next most likely monitor you might find is a 1920x1200 which is generally cheaper than 1600x1200 but not by much.
The basic core of your build is going to be most likely:
i5 2300/2400 ~$190 H61/H67 Mobo ~$90-$100 2x2gb RAM ~$40 Hard Drive - Usually around $45 for 500gb, $70 for 1tb, $120 for 2tb CD Drive - $20 Case - I'd save the money and reuse the old one PSU - $50 - My personal favourite for budget builds is this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026&cm_re=corsair_builder-_-17-139-026-_-Product but it won't be sufficient if you're going to upgrade heavily in the future. GPU - Around the $140-160 price range you can find the odd gtx 460(Not a bad card for it's cost but it is older generation technology) and some 6850s which'll do dual monitor fine and the 6850 can do triple provided you get one with enough outputs
The thing about your motherboard is that it most likely is not socket 1155(If it is excellent) If not, you might want to consider taking a look at processors from that generation (Socket 1156 is kind of reasonable to buy now if you already have the motherboard, anything older not really).

Uhg! I finished building my computer and i am pretty sure i followed everything but when i press power the front power LED flashes red then goes off. The monitor gets nothing, the fans don't start and nothing else happens. Any suggestions? Power supply like threatens to turn once then stops. My motherboard seems to get power for like 1 second, even my keyboard light flashes.

Hello! I'm helping a friend to buy a new desktop pc. It would be kind if you could say something about this setup, give suggestions etc. http://geizhals.at/eu/?cat=WL-164566 The list is in german, but I think that should be no problem, right? Power supply is already at hand.
It mainly will be used for playing SC2, civ5, maybe Diablo3 or stuff like that, not super highend shooters. We thought about adding more ram, 6-8GB, just to make multitasking more enjoyable (e.g. watching streams while running sc), but I've been told that that doesn't make much sense, is that right?
Oh, and would we need additional cooling or does the inclusive suffice?
Thx in advance. =)

You don't have a power supply with it ... it would have a hard time starting up :p
also what is your budget ? Because at that price i guess it's ok, but it's clearly not a great computer...

It doesn't need to be a great computer, as long as the games named by me in my last post work fine. The budget is 400€, max 500 I guess.

Hello, I've recently been looking into building my first computer and would like to give it a shot. I would like something that can handle just about any game with either max or close to max settings, while also allowing me to stream simultaneously (if possible on my budget). Thanks for your help in advance.
What is your budget?
Looking to spend anywhere from $850-$1000. Maybe a little over if it's necessary.
What is your resolution?
Whatever would be best. I currently don't have a new monitor. I'm using a very outdated one that I don't plan on using in the future.
What are you using it for?
I plan on using it for gaming, streaming, photoshop, possibly some video editing as well.
What is your upgrade cycle?
I've never built a computer before so I'd say I'm not looking to upgrade in the near future, so probably 2+ years.
When do you plan on building it?
I plan on building it as soon as possible.
Do you plan on overclocking?
Not sure if I will or not.
Do you need an Operating System?
I can get an OS free from my school. I would like a recommendation on which is best though if possible.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Not sure if I will or not.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'm from Rhode Island. I had planned on doing everything online, so like newegg.com and whatever else.

Clear CMOS.
Use one memory module at a time.
Build it ouside of the case.

It seems that the motherboard is expensive. You are much better off purchasing an Asrock H61M-VS and Intel Core i3 2100 instead which appears to come out to be less expensive and offer much superior performance:
http://geizhals.at/eu/a580321.html http://geizhals.at/eu/a623013.html
You can see the performance difference yourself in several articles such as these: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083 and http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500-2400-2300.html
With such a low budget, you're spending money on an unnecessary pre-overclocked Radeon HD5770. Just get the least expensive Radeon HD5770 with the brand you prefer and do the overclocking yourself with software: http://geizhals.at/eu/a494878.html

Here's a overclockable configuration for $955 before mail in rebates that's capable of all your tasks:
If you want to lower the budget or decided you're not interested in overclocking, you can switch out the Core i5 2500k for a Core i5 2400: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074 , switch out the Gigabyte Z68 D3H motherboard for an Asrock H61M U3S3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236, and remove the Xigmatek Gaia heatsink. This would remove roughly $100 from the total.
For the operating system, you will want to be getting Windows 7 Professional 64bit from your school.

I have a quick question, my comp is running now, but i was wondering on 1 plug in. On my HDD there is 3 plug in spots, 1 for power, 1 for sata, and the 3rd i dont know what plugs into it. Its is like 4 little pins .... like that. I cant find anything that goes there? It looks like this (near bottom of page) http://hothardware.com/Articles/Seagate_Barracuda_ES2_1TB_Hard_Drive/
|
That's the jumper, it's not a connector.
|
|
The first picture is the power for the floppy drive. The second picture is a molex connector for your fans, if you have any extra. The default fans in your case should go to your motherboard. The molex would only be used if you've used all the slots on your motherboard. The fans should have come with molex adapters, if you need them. The disadvantage with connecting fans directly to the power supply is that you can't monitor or control them with your computer. However, motherboards rarely have enough headers if you have a decent number of fans.
|
The first one is used to power a floppy drive. Useless.
The second ones you are describing are called molex adapters. These are used for fans and other devices.
|
OK awesome then im good to go. Thanks a lot.
