What something?

Get RealTemp.
Look at this image to see the problems with software temperature monitoring:
It says temp 2 and it never changes from 127. Scared me for a second. Checking out realtemp now. Video drivers are installed now. Hello resolution!
Real temp shows everything is fine. All cores running at 29-30.
And, if it's any consolation, speedfan is convinced one of my DIMMs is melting, but it isn't.
Funnily enough, temp2 is my RAM that speedfan is convinced is melting.
Sad thing is, I use speedfan on my tablet and I've gotten up to 90 before and I think it's actually right, lol.
So I guess I did okay installing the heatsink if I'm running at 29-30 basically idle?
Not necesarily. TadH was overheating with a 30C idle. Load with Prime95 to be sure.
Efficient CPU and downclocking to save power at idle can keep it cool even if it's mounted with spit, duct tape, and string.
And correction, in my case, that temp2 is NOT a memory DIMM, like google was saying. According to EVGA, for my board, the temperature being reported as dangerous is, in fact, perfectly healthy and it's my northbridge. If you open the configure tab, you can get more info and call your mobo's tech support to verify what temp it's talking about and ask them what it should be running at, then verify the temp in BIOS. And possibly slap a heatsink on it.

hmm my cpu seems to be idling around 60.... what can I do?
EDIT: how can i see stuff pertaining to my fan etc?

Cores or CPU?
cores... and I guess I should have checked this right at the start... but I think I played a game of sc2 and it probably got around 90 :S I really want to be careful with this though...
Now they seem to be idling around 45 degrees... If it makes any difference it's around 26 in the attic I'm in... maybe that's contributing to the excessively high temps?

Cores can go higher than CPU safely. Load with prime95 and watch temps that way. If CPU gets to 60, it's going way too high but hasn't done damage yet, or if cores start getting over 80. Mind you, ideal should be a good bit below those points, but to account for bad ambient temps and potential for bad airflow, those temps won't have caused damage yet if you stop the p95 test.
Yeah... ummm... the Prime 95 thing the cores briefly got up to 100... I stopped it immediately... maybe the stock heatsink isn't doing anything??
EDIT: Also, how do I see the CPU temp? It's only showing me the cores...
RealTemp is showing a max of 55-56 so far on my cores with Prime 95 running the "blend" test.
This is with no OCing either.
CPU-Z shows CPU temp.
Absolutely do NOT load your CPU again without reseating that fan, Meerkat.
Check this video for the bit on installing intel heatsinks.

It should say something about how the stupid little plastic things are supposed to go. If you can't get it seated right, get an aftermarket cooler.
So you think the fan isn't running at all?
I don't know if the fan is running or not. Did you plug it back into the motherboard? You can see CPU HSF RPM in CPU-Z. I'm guessing the stupid plastic pushpins are being cheap pieces of trash and preventing good heat transfer, though.
I don't see where you can see CPU temp in CPU-Z? Or the HSF RPM?
Hmmm, maybe it's just EVGA's tweaked CPU-Z that they redistribute that gives you that.
Waittt a minute... I didn't install the fan myself, my friend did. He however seemed to think the thermal paste was already on... Is that an incredible mistake?? If so where do I get thermal paste?
