First off, I'd like to say that I've built computers before, I know how to but I don't know what components to buy because I haven't kept up with recent parts. I'm sure that there are people here that know much more about what's what in the PC industry these days. I don't care about noise.
I already have the following: Zalman 92mm Cooler. I bought this 2 years ago, so I don't know if it will be compatible with the newer CPU sockets. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118223&cm_re=zalman_cooler-_-35-118-223-_-Product
Tuniq 650W PSU Two 12V rails, each with 25A. I actually like this PSU a lot. If anyone knows if this is a death trap or something then I'll upgrade. It's not listed on Newegg anymore
MSI N250 GTS (PCIe2.0) If I should upgrade this, let me know. I think it's fine.
CD/DVD Drive I rarely use this
I need: Case - A good one that doesn't short out the motherboard when I touch it. And that it stays together. Practicality > Flashiness for me. Motherboard - Reliability is very important to me I would also like integrated sound with three channel output. CPU - I've generally used AMD but I'm fine with running Intel. I don't want the best CPU ever, but I want something pretty good. RAM - I need 8GB. Hard Drive - I'm using 159.8 out of my 160GB right now, something a little bigger? I bought a 500GB drive back when that was a lot of storage but the drive was unreliable. I really want something that's reliable and fast. I am also considering running a RAID 0 setup if anyone recommends it.
What is your budget? $900 is the absolute max, $750 would be very nice. I will send you a very cheerful PM if you get me a good setup for under $750
What is your resolution? 1680x1050
What are you using it for? I don't really care about graphics for gaming, if the graphics are above the minimum for most games, I'll be happy with the GPU.
The majority of my hunger for power comes from web design. I frequently have Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, and Eclipse open all at once. My computer is fairly old so I have to close programs frequently. Also loading these programs take a while. I'd say hard drive speed is very important.
What is your upgrade cycle? My current build has been pretty much the same parts for 3 years. Before that, that computer lasted me 2 years. When I upgrade, I want to upgrade everything so I'm fine with getting a new motherboard if my socket is incompatible. I want all of my parts to last 3-4 years.
When do you plan on building it? As soon as practical, I want to get some research done but I'm ready to do it within 1-2 weeks.
Do you plan on overclocking? I've played with overclocking a little, I don't do it now and I don't have any plans to.
Do you need an Operating System? I have a copy of Windows XP right now, I like it a lot and I've configured a lot of things. That being said, I want to upgrade to Windows 7 sometime soon but not if it kills the budget.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No.
Where are you buying your parts from? I like Newegg a lot, so I'd prefer there. I've also had good experiences with TigerDirect.com. But I trust people here to find a good place. I live in Colorado USA, not a lot of places to buy retail.
I feel old thinking about how out of date I am... If someone could send me a PM with the results then that would be awesome, I don't check threads too often but I'll try my best to.
Thank you!

Ok windows 7 gets done with the installation then it says it needs to restart, but then it just goes back to the original setup screen and wants me to do it all over again.

Take the DVD out. It's bootable, and the first boot device. In other words, it will continue to boot off the disc while it's in there.

Take it out during the second boot?

Whatever bootable media you're using, remove it after the installation completes before the computer boots, yes. With a flash drive, I suggest doing so with the PC actually off.

Ugh.. So frustrating.

Clarify about the blue screens? Also, to avoid damaging the contents of the flash drive, if it isn't powering off, when it reboots, enter the BIOS, and somewhere in the settings will be Boot priority. Set Hard Drive to boot before USB and presto.

@Onioncookie
You mentioned you didn't want SLI or CrossfireX so why the choice of a UD4? If you want a 12 phase board or a SLI capable board, the Asrock P67 Extreme4 or ASUS P8P67 Pro would be similar / better at a less expensive price than the UD4.
If you don't mind ordering from Amazon, there are less expensive power supply options such as XFX: http://www.amazon.de/XFX-PRO450W-CORE-P1-450S-XXB9-Netzteil/dp/B004RJ8EIA/

Woo!!! Took out the USB at the right time and it's working right so far. Fingers crossed.
|
Wait... so now does the installation still need the USB to complete the installation? It's just sitting there saying completing the installation. In that case I'm going to have to do it again and do the BIOS boot priority method instead.

Just remember that particular bit of wisdom for next time, eh mate? If the computer is booting off of something specific, it will continue to do so until otherwise instructed or that something is removed, no matter what that something is.
Also, if you ever have to reset your BIOS (A.K.A. clear CMOS, you're doing this if you take the battery out of your motherboard), it will reset boot priority too, which has been known to drive even the tech savvy slightly batshit, since we're really good at forgetting the simple things when they're applied to our own hardware.

Alright I got it installed but it didn't accept my product key probably because it's an upgrade version. I'm doing a double install now.

Pretty sure there's a workaround for that. Haven't done it myself, but friends have.

Yeah... I should've just done the registry workaround. I was looking at that after I started the second (upgrade) install but it's almost done now so it's whatever. Installing the video card drivers after that then heading out to hang out with friends for the night. Thanks for the help everyone. I'm sure I come off as an absolute noob here but I'm not that stupid when it comes to computers. I just get inpatient sometimes haha.

Uh oh. Speedfan is showing a temp of 127 for something but everything is low or mid 30s. Just an error probably? I watched the CPU temp in the BIOS and it stayed at like 30.
