So because I changed from buying from NCIX to Canada Computers, the date changed from monday to wednesday. However the HDD I had lined up (http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_210_212&item_id=036109) is out of stock ONLY at the branch I'm going (Hamilton). Any good replacements available at that location? It's not TERRIBLY out of the way to go to the Hamilton Mountain location, but if there's another HDD that's just as good for similar price and will save me a trip I'd like that. Also, I don't think I'm getting a mobo with SATA3 so does that mean that one is dumb anyway? I don't know this stuff.
Also, I know the DVD writer doesn't have to be anything special, but any particular brands/models that are good but cheap? The one suggested earlier is out of stock at Canada Computers too.

Hey guys-
Received my components yesterday and put them together today, but unfortunately it turns out my 500w power supply isn't enough for my Asus GTX 560 which requires at least 550w. I ordered a 700w modular power supply from Amazon that arrives tomorrow for ~$30 more than the 500w cost, will that be enough to power my GTX 560 and i5 2500k CPU?
Edit: A friend says that he has a power supply that I can buy from him for relatively cheap, but I don't know the wattage and can't contact him until he gets back tomorrow evening. Should I cancel my amazon order (still can for a few minutes at least), or just let it go through? Thanks, Narwhal

500w is enough for a gtx 560 and 2500k...
|
Not according to the box on the 560.
Edit: from the bottom of the box: "Recommended system requirements: A minimum 550w system power supply (with 12v current rating of 38A).
|
If you got the CX500 V2 (or anything else skyR suggested), that can output over twice as much as you need. If it's not booting, that means that either (1) you installed it incorrectly or (2) one of the components is defective.
You should cancel the Amazon order ASAP regardless, even if you got a defective CX500 V2.
|
So wait, even though the box says that a 550w power supply is required, my CX500 (pretty sure V2) can run both an Asus GTX 560 (new version) and a i5 2500k? It won't fry my components if I reinstall it and turn it on? I haven't tried turning it on yet.
Edit: canceled the Amazon order anyway, or at least requested a cancellation. I want to figure this shit out before I spend any more money.

It won't fry, it's a good PSU, so it would just not work under the worst case. They say that on the box because of shit PSU's and crazy computer configurations, those are total system power under worst case assumption numbers, they didn't call the psychic hotline before printing the number appropriate for your rig on the box.

A GTX 560 uses something like 180W worst case (depends on the model--many have factory overclocks) if you try to run a synthetic burn test to try to fry it intentionally. As for the i5-2500k, that's more like 65W in a similar scenario if not overclocked.
These power supplies shut off if you overload them. But that's irrelevant since it would be impossible to go over 500W with that setup (unless you short something out accidentally I guess), even if you do some hardcore overclocking backed by some liquid nitrogen canisters.
edit: and by "shut off" I mean there is a chip inside monitoring the power draw that will turn the PSU off if a certain power draw is exceeded, hopefully before bad things happen. CX series is kind of entry level, so it's not really guaranteed that the protections will kick in before things get out of spec, but it shouldn't fry your computer in general.

Thanks guys! I'll install it again I guess and try powering it up though. Still need to figure out my OS problems though, I bought the WIndows 7 Pro upgrade but I can't DL it onto my mac to burn it onto a DVD. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Build is up and running, just need to install a few drivers and I should be good to go.

hey guys quick question. hope it is acceptable for this thread. my birthday is coming up and i want to upgrade to a comp that plays sc2. i was able to use my roommate at school's comp but now i am home and freaking out with no sc2...
i want a new comp but i don't really want to go through the stress of building my own. i want to spend between 1300-1500 and play on at least medium graphics. what do you suggest? alienware? classic dell? my birthday is looming so anything really helps.
thanks.

If you don't want to build, for the love of god don't go with either of the Dell brands. If you insist on prebuilt, order through ncix or something with assembly.

So computer is up and running now. Just a quick question. What should my core temp be idle preferably? Or playing SC2 for that matter.

Idle temperatures are dependent on ambient temperatures so it'll be different for each individual. It doesn't really matter what your idle temperatures are. Your load temperatures ideally should be under 60c for a normal load (SC2, another game, anything that isn't a stress-test).

Wanted to make sure my heat sink and everything was good. Appreciate the help as always. SC2 looks much better on extreme .
